Amazed that people in the comments section can't understand this, music publishing is painfully simple: 1. Music publishers don't know how to write songs, therefore they are looking for good songwriters (you) to keep business going (like it or not, the music business is just that, a business) 2. What a publishing company does have is connections to established record labels/artists/producers 3.Luckily for you, a lot of established artists can't actually write songs either so they hope for publishers to have songs available that they can use 4. You wrote the songs, publishing companies have the power to provide them to labels/artists who can generate sales (hopefully high sales) 5. You and the publishing company share the profits Beautiful in it's simplicity

Maybe you can help me. What you wrote, I already understood, but there seems to be something missing to my comprehension of publishing. As I understand it, music royalties are evenly split between songwriting and publishing. After the lyricist and composer, often the same person, have copyrighted their material, I am confused about what happens next. This seems to be where ASCAP, BMI, cdbaby, songtrust, or some other similar company comes into play. My understanding is that ASCAP and BMI are both publishing companies that will track your royalties in the United States. Cdbaby and songtrust are administrative services that will work in tandem with ASCAP or BMI to cover a more full spectrum of one's potential publishing revenue in the United States and worldwide. What is the best first step for a songwriter looking to start placing material?

Tes7000 ASCAP/BMI/SESAC/PRS are performance rights organizations. Not music publishers. They collect performance royalties (radio, tv, public) for music publishers and songwriters. Look up music publishing 101. That should answer all your questions.

Wow!!!!!, so a publisher performs the same task as a talent scout, manager, publicist, and producer. I didn't know they were so passionate and creative. What a bunch of bullocks.

What is the dif between a Manager and a Publisher then?
@acharich5 жыл бұрын
A manager is responsible for & represents ur whole career and all aspects of it, whereas a publisher just does that for songs & songwriting.. 🔑
