OMG I JUST WATCHED JLO'S MOVIE YESTERDAY AND WAS SOOOO HOPING Y'ALL WERE GONNA COVER IT!! I was two seconds away from requesting it in the Facebook group because of the semi-post credits trailer of the making-of documentary and how much the whole thing surprised, confused and delighted me! Did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did, it was a trip, a bit steampunk, Jupiter Ascending, Baz Luhrmann in a way I hadn't expected. So excited to hear your takes on it now and hope you also at some point cover the R-rated companion doc when it comes out as well as the internet and my current obsession. "Who tf did I marry". 🤭 *presses play*

It really did feel like it wanted to be Lemonade so bad but didn't have the depth of context and research even if it was a sincere depiction of her experience. My mom and I are talking as I'm watching and we both agree the conceit of the project seemed to be an extension of her cinematically built narrative that interfuses her public facing persona rather than an extension of her musical legacy/ identity. In other words, it felt more like a Marry Me 2 in the way that movie where she works up the corporate ladder at a grocery chain was like a Maid in Manhattan 2-- even has the same Vday release. I still enjoyed it, particularly Midnight Trip to Vegas the scene and song, but that's because I'd mentally slotted it as something a bit more light and airy than weighted and complex in the way other music film companions have been.

wasn't expecting the big take away from the JLO film to be "great sweaters, beautiful sweaters"😂 I also do not know her, but I'd say if Hustlers isn't her best movie, it's a career best performance. Movie was strong all around but she was the highlight & was snubbed that awards season. Wouldn't say she was robbed of a sweep, but some noms were in order. Even as a casual jlo snarker I have to give (acting) Jenny her flowers.

Eh. In my opinion it was good. It wasn’t an Oscar worthy performance tho. It doesn’t even come close to Emma Stone in Easy A or Rachel McAdams as Regina George, and those aren’t Oscar winning roles as iconic as they are. It’s like saying someone is an amazing dad when they changed a diaper…bare minimum here guys, don’t need to bring down the house just cause JLo wants an Oscar more than everlasting youth. Selena was solid acting and seems more to me like an Oscar contender.

You guys posted this before the TikTok wave of JLo ridicule 😆 you could have joined in on the conversation haha. I appreciate the candor - I’m tired of everyone treating JLo like she knows anything about art. She dresses well, but she doesn’t have a certain musical ear. She is a weird mix of stage presence with no “it factor”. You can tell she does it for the attention but not because she genuinely connects with the art in any way. Just look at the Super Bowl, she’s concentrated on shaping your perception of her (which has its moments) but Shakira is genuinely living the music in her veins and having fun. Shakira is an explosion of talent, her entire body embodies that music and is whisked away by it. It’s effortlessly contagious. If it wasn’t for Mottola, P Diddy, stage presence, and other women’s voices/autotune, she wouldn’t be a name in the music industry. Think about her movie roles, I love maid in manhattan, and she used to be more willing to do different characters BUT her new stuff is pure self-aggrandizement. She secretly loved playing an older woman who a younger man is obssesed with in the boy next door. It's the same spirit of this is me…now movie thing….she literally writes the script and has one of the zodiac council members say "shes smart, shes beautiful, and seems so strong. why does she always need to be with somebody?" The Mother, produced by jlo, not only has the worst script ever but also features no authentic integrity. It's not her fault shes a cold and distant mother!!! she just loves her daughter so much she has to protect her and treat her rude!! Ohhh!!😭😭 It's like she wrote it knowing mothers will be like "awwww i feel so bad for her😭 but she has a reason for it all!!!" It's so surface level. People who have trauma often have built a wall so think they cant even show glimpses of loving their children!! or they dont even know the deep-seated reasons why they’re so cold to their child cause it started as a protective mechanism and became auto-pilot. but it wasn't jlos fault guys!!! she was selfless the whole time😭😭😭 she didn’t want her daughter to be in that life!!!!! The mom knows this and wishes she could be with her!!!…😑 sure jan. And stop constantly justifying the character without allowing a natural progression. The emotional depth was just…flat What makes meryl streep so good? when she plays miranda priestly she couldn't care less if you come out of the movie liking her. She goes all in with the intent of making you feel the intimidation and disagreeableness that the character requires, with absolutely no redeemable reason. You'll be hard pressed to find a character where Jlo can do this, she just can't. Even in hustlers, though she lended herself to be unredeemably selfish (a better performance from her than most)she only agrees to it cause she gets to shake and bare her ass in the beginning and have a storyline reason that masks how much she wants to remind you shes hot at 50 and has a huge ass. But find a character that can't be sexy or have some honest, glaring flaw, and Jlo just can't do it. Margot Robbie had no interest in being sexy in iTonya, and you can tell. We've even seen ANGELINA JOLIE dull her sexiness to pursue a raw character. Complex characters that aren’t trying to make you think anything. They just are who they are. At the end of the day, her career will always echo its beginnings…turning her voice down in songs cause she can’t do runs like Christina Milian. Stealing Chante Moore’s song cause P Diddy has power. Stealing Mariah’s song before release because Mottola has power. They thought she was sexy, and JLo will always make sure that you think so too. Or if she can’t do that she’ll revert to the Bronx and mess up her hair like she grew up in the slums 🤡 But it’s always a hollow pie. JLo was always an idol in the popular sense. By which I mean she was an entertainer and the singing and acting was the side show to the main event. However because she was never really either at her core she has nothing to fall back on. That said her tour has been selling well and Marry Me did really well on Netflix. We underestimate JLo at our peril.

Oh wow, y'all really influencers now with TikToks, very excited about the Mug! Still undecided about where I'd commit a sticker because that does feel permanent and I'm against willy nilly stickers on a laptop and I'm still campaigning for quotables on shirts but I'd love to add this to my mug collections (Why isn't the mug link in the description? If that clip is anything to go by, it needs to come down to normal semi normal mug prices but maybe that's only a me hurdle. 🤷🏾‍♀) There was a lot more Ben than I expected to be honest and I think I craved it more because it was so brief and that's the best amount truly. It was hella better than Taylors new album for sure! They arent grasping that some artists just want to make music. Success in pop music today, particularly in the states, has nothing to do with music, but rather the para-social relationship "artists" have with fans.
