Hello Chill Fuel, I just wanna stop by and say thank you for going extra mile to adding subtitles to your videos. I'm deaf, and oftentimes KZbin auto captions is not so very accurate so it is very rare to find a channel with high quality content like yours that has subtitles in their videos. Thank you and keep up the good work🙌🏻

Been a Floyd fan for more than 40 years and this is new to me. It brought to mind the backwards message on the Wall album, something along the lines of: “Congratulations, you have found the secret message. Please send your answers to Old Pink, care of The Funny Farm.” It’s on the track “Empty Spaces “. I could have the wording wrong, but you get the idea.

We know for sure. This was a marketing gimic that failed and so never went beyond what we know. There is no more to figure out. There is no answer. The record label never got that far into it before giving up. The band had nothing to do with it and didn't even know it was a thing til long after the fact. Gilmour is on tape in an interview saying just that, he had no idea it was even a thing let alone the answer. Do a little better research. As a Pink Floyd fan, I've been reading about this mystery for years and it's just so disappointing. It's basically an abandoned ARG that never even got to the first clue. Everyone generally agrees that some kind of constructed mystery did exist, and it did have a real solution, but beyond that every theory is just desperate grasping at straws. I don't really care about what the prize would have been, I want to know what the clues were and what they meant, how one was meant to lead to the next. No one told you when to run. You missed the starting gun.

I think this is a great case study in how these things don't really work if there isn't true passion behind them. I think the reason this never really got off the ground is because it was essentially a corporate thing without a genuine purpose. The only person who seemed invested in promoting the mystery was the marketing guy behind it, who even then seemed mostly interested in creating the puzzles and had to sort of invent a purpose to them after the fact. Let's imagine that the band had been involved and were actively participating in the mystery. Maybe the prize could have led fans to a secret show somewhere, for example, which would've been hard to logistically coordinate but not impossible if everyone was on board. Maybe the band could've "accidentally" let more obvious clues leak as the date of the show got nearer; no one would care if the puzzles weren't actually solved Cicada 3301-style, because people would then get caught up in the excitement over the unexpected show in the remote field or small venue or whatever. Maybe the puzzles could've been oriented towards getting the puzzle solvers free tickets, with anyone else who found out about the show needing to buy them to get access. But that's the sort of thing that would really need to come from the band itself, or at least resonate with them enough that they'd put energy into it. It sounds like this was the idea of someone in the marketing department, and the band basically responded with, "Okay, sure, do your thing." The fact that it was still going in 1997, with the hope that leading some fans to meet up in the middle of a forest would still lead to a viral moment three years after the fact, paints a really sad picture for me.

@@stevencatone I'm not really sure what part of my comment you're replying to. I'm not theorizing about the mystery at all (except imagining that the band didn't participate in it, which your comment confirms). I'm trying to explain why the stunt didn't work, and imagining a scenario where it could have worked. Not sure there was any reason for your comment to be so hostile. Edit after seeing this comment under other comments: Please rewatch the video. This video covers the fact that this stunt was created by the record company. Nobody in this comment section who's watched the video to the end thinks there is a real mystery to be solved anymore.

@michaellisinski2822
@michaellisinski2822 Жыл бұрын
@@stevencatone Several of the people you've replied to didn't need to be told that this was a marketing gimmick. Obviously there was some idea at some point for what the first clue was supposed to be, given the initial "hints" and the fact that the initial poster didn't stop commenting until 1997. In the full interview the video cites about this case, Nick Mason acknowledged that there was some general idea for a "clearing in the trees" to be the main prize, and actually himself believed there was a solution to the puzzle, although he was only speculating because (as the video makes clear) there was little to no involvement from the band. He *then* clarified that it had been a long time since there was anyone at EMI who cared about the project, so it was useless to try to solve it. It's natural to speculate about exactly how far the initial puzzle-maker's vision went, even if EMI ended up abandoning the project. This is largely what people are discussing. But that's almost besides the point. There's no reason to come after people with such condescending language when you're clearly not fully reading what they're saying. I'm not going to argue anymore after this comment, so I'll lead you to believe what you like. Have a nice day.

I was on the Echoes mailing list back at the time the Enigma was going on. There were a lot more theories posited, including that Publius was Nick Mason himself. The thing I don't get about it being someone from EMI and a promotional thing is that the people who would have taken interest were likely the ones who would have bought the record already, and most likely go to the shows. Preaching to the choir, as it were. My guess is that it was someone having everyone on, and Marc Brickman, PF's lighting director, heard about it and had a little fun with it.

I'd like to quote the band Kansas to summarize the flaw in this publicity stunt: "There is no answer / when there is no question" There hasn't been any resolution to this mystery because no real mystery, question, or puzzle has been provided. Some guy on the internet said "Hey if someone thinks really cool thoughts there will be a prize!" What's the goal? A crossword puzzle has explicit answers; a maze begs to be navigated; an image of a statue of the villain of a cartoon show for a single frame at the end of the final episode of the show begs to be found. All this superficially mysterious and esoteric talk is just hot air.

The answer is in the Pink Floyd biography by Mark Blake ("Pigs might Fly"). Marc Brickman, the lighning director, claimed he was told by the band manager, Steve O'Rourke, to arrange the lights in order to show the "Publius Enigma" phrase. And it was Nick Mason himself who explained the enigma in 2005. It was a puzzle fanatic employe at EMI who proposed the idea. So yep, the Publius Enigma is as shallow as the later Pink Floyd records (wich I love but they're still shallow anyway lol).

This was everywhere on the Internet back in the days, I remember reading the FAQ with all the theories. I was in Karachi and had to visit the Internet Cafes. However, the internet in the Internet Cafe wasn't cheap and hence I could only afford 1 visit a week. Yet I tried for a few months to keep up with the Publius Enigma story but to no avail. Today, the moment I saw Publius Enigma, all the memories came along with it. I still think about this from time to time... I remember hearing about it as a teenager, then a friend got the Pulse DVD and we saw the text, which blew our minds. I had a pet theory that each song on the Division Bell has sound bites from other albums and that somehow those were the clues, but I could never put it together into something meaningful. I really wanted there to be some magic solution to it when I was a teenaged Pink Floyd fan, and the fact that I still think about it now as a PF fan in my 40's says... well, it says something 😂

Everything bout Pink Floyd silently screams that it’s about the journey along the way not the prize at the end. Remember they have a song called “The Gold’s In The Valley” where the lyrics are “Come on my friends, let’s make for the Hills. They say there’s gold but I’m looking for thrills. You can get your hands open whatever we find but I’m only coming along for the ride”. I think this Publius Enigma is similar. It’s not about solving the puzzle but what you learn along the way… the adventures you have… the people you meet. ✌🏽❤️🎸🍄🍃

The easiest way of making a riddle look extremely hard and mysterious is to simply have no answer at all, and leave random clues only to keep the think alive. I mean anyone who has taken a look on famous puzzles has came across this "the prize is the collaboration between passionated people". I would say this was silly but effective marketing strategy that predicted what many producers would be doing in the 2020s

I believe Pink Floyd to be one of the most enigmatic bands ever. The coincidences with movies surrounding their music is always something else, as seen with the "connections" between DSOTM and Wizard of Oz, The Wall and WALL-E, and, interestingly, Echoes sync at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey. I said interesting because Stanley Kubrick wanted Atom Heart Mother on A clockwork orange, but the band denied and then, 2001's final part syncs with Echoes. There's also Syd Barrett's sudden and mysterious appearence at the recording sessions of SOYCD, a song about him. Also worth mentioning the large amount of songs that were never released or incluced on any compilation or anything. Pink Floyd has some interestingly lost medias that I never saw anybody talk about.

I'm no code breaker but the names of the tracks sound like dates throughout American history e.g the division bell, the liberty bell July-8- 1776. Wearing the inside out meaning the birth or death of Edward Gein. Coming back to life meaning experiments in the revival of organisms, all dates in time. Possibly completely different dates and times but that's the idea. Maybe those numbers refer to letters in the alphabet or on a keyboard. The album cover picture of the heads talking to each other look like they are in the shape of a heart.

What if it's an elaborate scheme to get Syd Barrett into the theory, but he resisted and did his own thing. Well he did make his own music once.* What happens if so many people obsessed over both? Well. I think Roger Waters can solve this problem. He knows enough about Syd that he wouldn't do this. Right?

I have to correct you on the DVD censorship of Pulse. On the DVD itself the Enigma writing was replaced with E=MC2. The Blu-ray and DVD rerelease of 2019 was almost entirely cut out because it is a different cut of the concert film with different angles.

@@anarcho-communist11 I had a lot of friends in record stores. There have been as many cool promotions as there are bands. The Tubes produced a small number of promotional cardboard wall lamps, in a 3D rendering of the Remote Control album! They are so rare many collectors think it wasn't made! I understand why this one seems bigger, but I think the clues were presented to a very small number of message board users, who were not savvy to the mysterious user. The word lights on stage are a giveaway because those things are huge and we're installed by local crews under guidance of roadies, so not secret or a surprise.

Publius- public,I,us. Enigma. People are a mystery. So listen and and learn. There was an owl in the blimp. Wisdom, Pink Floyd brings people together. There is one thing that can’t be solved. The power of humans together, and by ourselves.

Another great video. Thank you for this. Noticed a couple of times you used the wrong word and got me kinda confused. But luckily the video and editing got you covered. Although I strongly think your theory could be true, I still find it strange there's no actual answer. Can't we just find the guy who ever made the album art? Hiding the word "enigma" in album covers. Make him tell us why/what/how.

There are even other youtube videos already debunking this and explaining in detail what I just summarized for you. You're welcome.😂😂😂😂😂 you're a liar cause there wasn't 5 years of anything to go through lol

I might have solved this enigma, although I will only say so much. If your response to that is that I don't have the answers so be it, there are the "answers" for those who care not to see or listen, and then there's the answers based in truth and history. The whole concept seems to be bringing opposites together via a "higher understanding" of the world and history, which includes the future. There's two types of people in this modern world; us and them, and to bring an end to all divisions a great harvest of crops if you will shall take place leaving only a world of "higher understanding". I've seen enough, great video btw.
