Music Teacher Reacts: PENTATONIX - Mr Grinch
So here we are with yet another of the amazing Pentatonix! Mr Grinch is part of a 4 part mini series I did on the same song. 4 bands, 1 song, 4 versions.
Hope you love this reaction and thanks for all the continued support!

I loved that comment also. I think the "growth" that I saw in them was watching the SingOff journey where they were literally inventing the group and finding their sound. And even then, they were pretty great from the get-go. But that's where I could see the progression the best. DJ, you'd love watching that.

Oh yes! Another amazing arrangement: Matt is so perfect as the lead. His enunciation and theatrics are delectable. Scott covering the bass like a pro, well he is. Kevin’s crazy beats, yes, I agree with you, his cymbals sound metallic. And, my goodness, he never takes a break. He is jumping from beatboxing to harmonizing without any rest. AND Kirstie and Mitch’s perfectly blended and synchronized harmonies, their dynamics, theatrics... I love this band! Great comments. Thank you. 🤗

Where I've seen the same type of harmonic chemistry is family bands or sibling bands. People who have been together for their entire musical career. While that is not completely the case for PTX, I do think that the fact that Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin have musically interacted with one another since they were children, it gives them an advantage. They harmonize with ease, because they know where the others naturally go.

The same goes for the French-language "Papatouai." Another good example of Kevin on cello is "Dancing on My Own (Robyn's Song)," which, in fact, he does as a substitute for bass vocals, because it was done after Avi left and before Matt came in.

From a music comp angle you should watch the Star Wars Live performance at the Grammys or AMA awards I don't remember which it was. They sang with and with out John Williams and live orchestral backing. Some don't like it because they aren't fully alone but the two together and they way they left room for both to shine was just wonderful. It's not Christmas related but as a drum Corp alum and someone who is not just a fan of pentatonix but musical composition in general, the merger of both was quite amazing and to be live in front of industry immortals as well....they pulled it off on a whole other level. Love your insightful reactions. It's nice to hear someone talk about why they are so good instead of just ohhs and ahhs. Your ears are very in tune with what's going on!

PTX has always been great at being expressive and acting out the music. They always give their all to convey the meaning of their songs. I think most of that is based on the Trio having musical theater backgrounds since they were little kids and the other two feeding off of them.

Pentatonix always delivers with a little something extra and I can never wait to find it. It would be so cool if you watched some of their sing off performances. Like see where they started and how they got to where they are.

As far as I am concerned, this is perfection.

Rockapella has a really good rendition of this. Though, it's old (the album with it was released in 2000) and there's no video, somebody did upload the audio of it. I'm not familiar with the versions of the other groups you mentioned, but Rockapella's version is also their bass of the time (Barry Carl) singing lead.
