There is a lot of processing in this recording but Su-metal sings this live, there is a backing track but it is mostly her when live. The Babymetal team likes to constantly mix it up. There is the Dream Theatre-like prog metal "Tales of the Destinies", the Bollywood-inspired, "Shanti, Shanti, Shanti", the folk metal "Oh Majinai". They have songs from a variety of metal genres plus non-metal genres. And Su-metal seems to be fearless about tackling any of them.
@KenjaTimu
@KenjaTimu 4 жыл бұрын
Mostly? Sure maybe. There is less autotune when it's live. There is still quite a bit. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Whatever they're doing to her voice is for artistic effect. Autotune is not the boogeyman some people make it out to be.

@KenjaTimu
@KenjaTimu 4 жыл бұрын
@@martinmetal7481 - sure, I'm not saying it was bad or sounded bad. Autotune doesn't make it bad. People have this false idea that autotune is for making bad singers sound good. That isn't what it does. It was a tool invented to make what was already being done easier. If you wanted to make singing natural it was already too late for that before autotune was invented. Auto tune can fix one or two notes that are very slightly off. They could already do that but this was easier. It can't make someone a good singer. Or it can be used like in this song set to max and used for effect. If they use autotune in the way it was intended you would never know. What people think of as autotune is it being used excessively and not as intended.
@MacTaipan
@MacTaipan 4 жыл бұрын
@@KenjaTimu I'm convinced that there's no autotune live. This song specifically has many notes that slide up, and that's where autotune would really stand out. I don't hear any of it. The characteristic autotune jumping from note to note during those slides, that David Morgan mentioned here (by example of the "be" during the "chorus"), is clearly not present live (except for that "be", which is not sung live).
@KenjaTimu
@KenjaTimu 4 жыл бұрын
@@MacTaipan - that's fine. But I can hear it. I don't know if it's autotune exactly but her voice is not natural.

So, BABYMETAL’s biggest strength BY FAR is their live performances. I can’t recommend their live videos enough. They’ll blow your mind. This song is much better live without the processed vocals. For live songs, I highly recommend “Headbanger” (live at Legend 1997) and “Road of Resistance” (official Live in Japan). If you wanna do a music video or studio recording, check out “Megitsune” or “Karate” as these the rare exceptions where the MV’s are better (for a first time listen, the live versions are absolutely killer still).

Please, do a react of the most progressive metal song of BABYMETAL “Tales of the Destinies” and after that the song “The One”. It's some kind of a 2 parts song, the first is very difficult and the second part is the most accessible part. As a musician I think you will like this 2 (1 !) songs. Thank for your video, always awsome to see !

Great reaction and analysis, thanks and welcome to the BABYMETAL Galaxy. I just need to correct a minor issue in one of your pop up bits of info (love them by the way) - The Kami Band (Kami means god or spirit, so yes you were right with the gods of guitar bass and drums) are the live band. When BABYMETAL first started as a sub-unit of a Jpop Idol group and in their very first solo shows they had no budget for a live band so the instrumentals were pre-recorded - and at their shows the Babybones (guys dressed in skeleton suits) would mime the instruments. They and the Kami Band are not the same people (your pop up stated the Kami Band were previously known as Babybones) - Babybones were actors, dancers or staff members, not musicians. The Kami Band were first introduced in October 2012, two years after BABYMETAL started performing. At first they played the encores in a couple of shows and supported BABYMETAL at a couple of festivals, then they did a short series of shows in May 2013 when BABYMETAL first separated from the Idol group. Meanwhile Babybones were still there waving guitars and rubber drum sticks round for the rest of the shows until their last big show in December 2013 (Legend 1997 celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday) where the Kami Band came on for the last 5 songs and then Babybones did a couple of shows in Singapore and Taiwan at the start of 2014. At the first big shows in March 2014 at the Budokan the Kami Band became the full time support band for BABYMETAL in those and all live shows ever since. In 2019 the Kami Band of the West (guitarists from the American band Galactic Empire plus Anthony Barone on Shadow of Intent on drums) came in to support BABYMETAL throughout the US tour of 2019 and the Europe and UK tour at the start of 2020. Not only is 'BxMxC' not in their usual style - they really don't have a usual style as such - every song is different (you may find a couple here and there have similarities, but they take some finding). I think you would enjoy analysing 'Megitsune' (the official video is very good even though BABYMETAL are first and foremost a live performance act - that is where they are at their very best, not least because the Kami Band are supporting them, but mainly vocally as well) and 'Rondo of Nightmare' with the 'Mischiefs of the Metal Gods' instrumental intro.

Awesome. That's some serious analysis that I haven't seen anywhere else. Instant subscribe. Really interesting to hear those riffs on a piano. It gives a different perspective on the sound that I really appreciate. Couple of small correction: "Babybones" and the Kamiband are two different groups; Babybones are just dancers that hold instruments in some music videos and early live performances. The Kamiband are session musicians who were originally only brought into to do encores, until early 2014 (I think) when they became the full time support band. Also, the studio versions are not necessarily recorded by the Kamiband. We only know in a few cases that some of them were involved in the studio recordings. I think you'd find a lot to talk about in the live performance of "Rondo of Nightmare", from the "Budokan Black Night" concert. It should be the seven minute version that has the instrumental intro. The song "Megitsune" is often held up as representing the core essence of Babymetal and would also give you much to talk about on the production side (the official music video is best in that case)

I think it'd be super interesting to hear your thoughts and technical hints on arguably their boldest and most technical song yet "Tales of the Destinies" which is a definite nod to Dreamtheater. Mike Portnoy actually tweeted about that song answering to his son recommending him to listen to it. Indeed, Mike Portnoy's son is a huge BABYMETAL fan :). Portnoy seemed to love their take on prog-metal. Lots of interesting things to analyze and pick out in that song. But I can't stress enough that neither BxMxC nor Tales of the Destinies will make you really understand what BABYMETAL is like. Both of these songs are very out there even from their point of view. And BABYMETAL itself is very unique and genre defining music on its own hah. I guess as a music teacher listening to their songs live isn't as interesting (or important) but you need to be told that they're really in essence a live performance act. Their albums are mere appetizers for their live shows which have earned them numerous awards over the years.

I recommend Tales of Destinies. It's not well known, because it's very progressive, and not many people can appreciate the complexity of the song. You will have a lot of things to analyze there. It took them 2-3 years to make it, and only performed it live once, 'cause it's hard to pull it off live. It's just a modern masterpiece, and it really shows the musical knowledge of everybody involved with Babymetal.

There are many fancams of BxMxC from the EU leg of their last World Tour, and yes, it's sick, it sounds huge. They've been experimenting a lot since the beginning, but their last album is a mix of so many different genres, another interesting song is their collaboration with Polyphia, Brand New Day. But if you'd rather check them from the early days, my suggestions are: Akatsuki (SU solo) Ijime Dame Zettai or IDZ Megitsune Karate Arkadia (again, last album) And yes, like many others have commented, better go for their live performances. 🤘🦊⚡

I suggest BABYMETAL - ROAD OF RESISTANCE, Live in Japan, to get a feel for what BABYMETAL is really all about, which is live stage show and epic production. And then BABYMETAL - MEGITSUNE, to wrap your head around how musically innovative they are. Finally BABYMETAL - TALES OF THE DESTINIES which has around 40 time signature changes and is simply a masterpiece! (although there is a video of it being performed live, it isn't on KZbin, which sucks because its one of the most epic live performances by any band, ever.) After that you'll certainty want to listen to a lot more of their work, which is prolific and spans almost the entire genera spectrum. Kitsune Dao!

Thanks for doing this reaction/analysis. Love the deep dives. As others have mentioned live is much more raw it has the preference of many/most fans. How this sausage was made ? From an interview with the main vocalist, Su-metal: Su-metal: That was my first rap experience. For most of my recordings up until now, I would sing “la la laa” to create a sort of vocal line, and then lyric writing began based on that. Typical J-Pop recording has the session singer record demo vocals once the arrangement, lyrics and melody are finished. Then the group uses that demo as a guide to do their recording. BABYMETAL doesn’t record in the J-pop style, they do it like a rockband. Su-metal: But it was different for this track, they had a backing track and lyrics, and then told me to try rapping. So at first I was still trying to figure it out. In hiphop they call it...it was like...ah, I forget! Moametal: Wasn’t it...f-...fall? Su-metal: Uh...what was it... KOBAMETAL, who happened to be there: Flow? Su-metal: Flow! (laughs) To get a feel for the flow, I made a lot of different attempts to figure out what would be good. Like how to descend and ascend in pitch, and which timing would be the best to try the pitch changes. Even for the same phrase I’d try going a little ahead of the beat or a little bit behind it, while keeping the whole track’s balance in mind. PS Babybones are not the same as Kami band.

You could do their entire discography and never get bored because they’re all so different. Definitely check out ‘Megitsune’ or ‘Tales of the Destinies’. PS. They’re much better live, but the Megitsune music video is great so check that out. Also, they’ve only done TOTD live one time because it’s insanely complex so just do the audio for that, because you won’t be able to get any live footage of that song up without being blocked

Road of Resistance - Live in Japan is where I think a good starting point into BabyMetal would be. Kinda a good display on all the aspects that make them successful.

Cool reaction and review or breaking down what happen in this song. Really appreciate it. 40++ songs ,and none are alike For live performance ,I'll suggest " Headbangerrrrr!! Live Legend 1997" For studio version,now I will go along for Music Shed to react on Babymetal's musical masterpiece known as " Tales of the Destinies"

A really interesting, technical backed reaction. Thank you. If you want suggestions, I'd say this: just keep reacting to babymetal. Almost every song is musically different, and all are exceptionally fine-tuned musical gems. Also... if you buy incense in packs of 100 you are probably doing it wrong. (Unless they are expensive packs). I've just found "the difference" between cheap and decent sticks; and it's really analogous between most metal and Babymetal IMO. Although Babymetal doesn't cost 10 times other metal.

Cool analysis! Apart from Su's cool vocals, those kick drum bursts at the end are what flashes me most about the song. The fact that it's not a continuous pattern, but only those short burst, makes them much more effective.

Good reaction, definitely not what I would recommend someone new to Babymetal. If you like analyzing music I recommend "Tales of The Destinies" or "From Dusk Till Dawn". Other recommendations: "Megitsune", "Syncopation", "Shine", "Brand New Day", "Road of Resistance", "Headbanger" They have some of the best live performances ever, I highly checking one of those out.

Very nice analysis. BABYMETAL is a treasure box if you have fun dissecting music. Their latest album even more so than the two previous. But, as they themselves stated numerous times, they are a live act and they shine brightest when on stage. They also leave out a lot of the vocal effects when they perform their stuff live, not that they use much vocal effects in their songs in general. BxMxC is easily in the top 5 with the most effects on Su's vocals. "You were telling me this song is different from their others", welcome to BABYMETAL. Every song is different from the last, that's one of the points that makes them so much fun, you'll never be bored. I always jokingly say the Metal Galaxy album (their latest) came out of a laboratory instead of a studio because a lot of the songs are different kinds of metal, mixed with other metal genre(s) and then mixed with other music genres to top it off. A little correction on your popup at 9:58: The live band (it's their live band only, there's only one member who had a hand in actually recording songs) is known as the Kami Band, as you stated, but it translates directly to "Band of Gods". Kami means God in Japanese. So they weren't pka as "Band of Gods", it's just the translation of "Kami Band". The Babybones on the other hand have nothing to do with the Kami Band, they were "actors" in skeleton suits (your picture) playing a band on stage in the earliest BABYMETAL concerts. They only mimed playing instruments in 2012 and 2013. The Kami Band played their encores in that time and took over full time in 2014.

Awesome reaction and welcome! We here in "The One" (what BABYMETAL calls their fans) are always happy to have new people jump on down the fox hole (our version of the rabbit hole as much of BABYMETAL's lore and back story centers around foxes and a "fox god"). I love hearing contributions from those who are musicians or music teachers. As a teacher myself, I can always appreciate when someone brings some knowledge to the table that I don't know about. In this case I absolutely love music, but never really gave it a go at learning to play anything, so hearing about the technical and stylistic aspect is awesome to me. Now, when it comes to BABYMETAL you have to know a couple things. First, you mention that the person who suggested this said it wasn't their normal sound or style. They are right and wrong. They're correct in that it doesn't sound like any of their other songs. They are incorrect because ALL of their songs sound different from one another! Second, Live BABYMETAL is the best form to witness, however, there is something to be said about their music videos. The videos for "Karate" and "Megitsune" (pronounced "May-git-soo-ney") are wonderful, with the former being a piece of art in all aspects. They have others, largely from their early days, that are fun to see to see how much they have grown since they began at ages 12 and 11! Third, they were the first Asian band to debut an album on the Billboard Metal Chart in the U.S. with their newest album, Metal Galaxy, that came out last year. That is how good they are. A lot of people still don't know of them, but it is growing by leaps and bounds on here because of reactors like yourself. Ok, so suggestions of songs... "Headbanger" Live at Legend 1997 - This really shows everything you need to know about the dynamic of their live shows: shredding instruments, amazing choreography and vocals, a stage show that involves/plays with/controls the crowd, and it is a sight to behold. "Doki Doki Morning" (Music Video) - You have seen/heard their newest, why not go back to their very first song. You will really see how much they have changed stylistically and vocally. "Road of Resistance" Live in Japan - Ok, you're going to get this one a lot. It is a great song, amazing performance, and it gets blocked...like A LOT! You should try to pause it several times, skip a couple seconds here or there, or superimpose their logo over the video but leave it translucent so we can still make out the video just enough. Lastly, "Distortion" Live at Download 2018 - This one I suggest for two reasons. 1) You used the word distortion a couple times and made me think of it, and 2) it was the first song I really heard from them earlier this year that led me to this point where I can't get enough of listening to them. It's a lot of fun to watch and a pretty heavy song as well.

Awesome reaction, and super bold choice to go with BxMxC as a first song. It is so radically different from anything else they’ve done, though that shouldn’t surprise me as literally every song is a different style. As others have said you really need to check out some live stuff from Babymetal, the studio techs do great work but when you realize just how good Su-Metal’s voice is live and what she is able to do with it it’s going to blow your mind. Highly highly highly recommend and hope you react to either Akatsuki or Rondo of Nightmare (with Mischief of the Metal Gods intro) both performed at the Budokan Black Night concert.

Would love to see you analyzing MEGITSUNE, you'll love the heavy Japanese vibe this early track (but nevertheless one of their greatest songs) has. Spoiler alert: there's a Japanese folk song in there, see if you can find it, lol. You need to do the official MV of this one (and a few others), but you need to see live performances of them, too, as that's where they shine. So here's some suggestions, and what musical lessons are involved with each one: * MEGITSUNE (Official), Japanese instruments and scales * KARATE (Official), syncopated (djenty) guitar riffs, and WTF is that melody made of? * RONDO OF NIGHTMARE (live with Mischief of Gods intro), odd time signatures, band solos jazz-combo style, haunting melody/harmonics * TALES OF THE DESTINIES & THE ONE, these two songs are their little prog-rock suite, but be advised: if you want to dissect the first one, take half a day off. ;-) TALES is only really available on KZbin as audio only (and a fan cam live video with horrible, HORRIBLE audio. Don't go there), THE ONE has a gorgeous official live video. There's many, many more Babymetal songs waiting for you, and you should check out ROAD OF RESISTANCE (official live) for their stage presence and impact, but it's musically not as thrilling (major chords and scales only, I think). For more appreciation of the singer's voice, please look at AKATSUKI (live at Budokan). That's it from me for now, did I say I love the way you do these? Because I do. Keep 'em coming!

ok i would recommend rondo of nightmare (with mischiefs of god intro) a great look at the kami band and Su singing by her self for a song with Moa and Yui (left the band in 2018 due to medical issues) i would say Sis Anger is my favorite of that style a song showing Su's range i would say is Akatsuki unfinished version Headbanger is another one you should listen to.. recommend from ledged of 1997 concert (1997 is Su's birthyear
