I don't care how many times I've seen it...there's something awesome about "that start". The uniforms, the salute, the music begins, all well and good. But, when the leader gives the signal with the staff, and they all take that first step......I am so very proud and overjoyed. I marched with my high school band in the 1963 Rose Parade. The band in front of us was the Marine Corps band. Those were the days that the Pasadena City College band led off the festivities as the host band. Anyway, when you march the parade it isn't just the five plus miles of the actual parade route. You add in marching down the assembly road that runs parallel to the parade route. It can be seven miles or more. Well we get to the end of the parade and the finish area we stopped at was where the Marines had stopped. I was dying and so was most of our high school band. Then our conductor, a former Marine bandsman himself, pointed over to the Marine band. They looked so fresh and relaxed it was like they hadn't even marched in the parade. The Marine band was half our size and put out three times the volume. So discouraging for a 16 year old. I quit the band and joined the Marine Corps. Semper fi Sgt USMC 0311 1964-1970

I'm amazed that at many public events people actually need to TOLD to remove their hats. Once a Marine , always a Marine. The only thing my father loved more than being a Marine was our mother and us kids. Thank You for posting this video. And Thank You to all of you out there that know what respect and honor are. I was fortunate and blessed to have served with and played trombone with the 2nd Division USMC Band @ Camp Lejeune (1969) and the 3rd Division USMC Band @ Okinawa (1970). We traveled often for official USMC events...parades, colors, honors and retirement ceremonies, and civilian events. There is no other military band that compares with the MARINES! Notice... spit and polish. The only command given by the Drum Major is with his baton and salute (other than Parade Rest). No voice command. And all our music is memorized. No lyre to hold music. The musicians were the best of the best...I would even say a few were genius. When I came upon this KZbin video I once again felt cold chills...tears...my eyes filled with tears. God Bless our MARINES! SEMPER FI. ❤🇺🇲

As much as "etiquette for the flag of the country that you live in" may be available on the internet....................putting certain aspects of the state and national government of the country that you live in in the pages of daily newspapers all over your country would get seen be the masses. Using the front section of the newspaper every week for about one whole year to post things like the entirety of The Declaration Of Independence, The Constitution Of The United States, profiles of every president, the name of every state and the geographic location of the capitol city of that state would get people to learn more about "civics" than they currently know. I think one part of the problem (because I have this problem myself) is that people aren't interested in going through the process to keep learning this stuff after high school is over. If it isn't "thrown in your face when you least expect it to be" you'll never decide to go out and search for it yourself. So put it in the newspaper one Saturday every month of the year for the next 4 years or so and people will eventually get around to sitting down and reading the whole thing in their spare time. For example, take a map of all 50 states and color each state a different color than the other 49. Then do a small bio on each state (not necessarily the names of the individual government officials at that time as much as general information about that state and its general history where that information won't likely change for the next 50 years or more) and place all 50 bios on 2 pages in the front section of the daily newspaper in every county in the country. A few weeks later an article on the proper display of the U.S. Flag in every specific type of display that is possible Considering that some people don't know that you're not supposed to fly the flag at night if it isn't lit by direct incandescent light). If I could ever become a member of a government group that serves a population larger than 5,000 I would suggest that in the daily newspaper in that part of the country.

I am Air Force and I can agree with what you say. I have a very nice story about that actually, albeit Young Marines but they do seem to follow the USMC's spirit and discipline pretty well for a youth group. I was in the Honor Guard and we were out doing a colors ceremony for a WW2 memorial. As we suited up, set up, and started marching out to the site, a group of Young Marines were waiting in a parking lot for their own part in the ceremony. As we passed by, their cadet squad leader immediately rallied the rest, formed them up by the road as we marched by, and called them to present arms until we had passed. Very impressed by that. If a bunch of young cadets can do this, then the USMC as a whole is a very impressive branch.

Remember that in addition to being fine musicians, each member of the band is a qualified USMC Rifleman. Any specialty you may acquire as a Marine, you have to be a rifleman first, last and always. In many cases, fleet Marine band members went ashore with the assault troops and acted as stretcher bearers in battle situations, and assisting Navy Corpsmen in treat the wounded.

@@mgbsecteacher I've heard that the Marines' PR skills are second only to their fighting ability. Indeed, those PR skills are why they exist today. After WWII, the Army top brass, Truman, and Eisenhower tried to absorb the Marine Corps into the Army (at the time, the Commandant was not a member of the joint chiefs of staff; he was only consulted on matters related to the Corps.); the Marines mounted a PR campaign with Congress, and as a result they passed a law mandating the USMC with a minimum of four divisions.

I love this band! Absolute top class! A great pity that the performances of the Marine Bands were limited (saving measures!) But there's the Band of the America's Fews! Veterans who do a great job and preserve the honor! Such as at the Estes Park Tattoo in Colorado!

In my day when a military band would pass everyone would stand and ALL the men would take their hats off to show respect. I miss those days

Aye, it's sad that modern society doesn't give military personnel the respect they deserve anymore. There are also less 'Thank you for your service' statements nowadays, but it's the society we live in.
