When one reads the critique written about her, unnecessarily commenting on her wardrobe and sexulizing her (my gods, especially when it's done in the comments' section), it's almost always the British or the American critics doing it. Two nations known worldwide to be very prudish and very oppressive towards women and what women consider individual freedom, boasting otherwise to be equal towards everyone! Another issue is, the likes of Yuja Wang, Khatia Buniatishvili, Patricia Kopatchinskaja etc might be the last people who you would want them hear play a simple and sweet Mozart concerto or a classic Scarlatti sonata. Because it is simply not their thing and they prefer to focus on a more limited and maybe even niche side of western-music repertoire which is by the way a very very HUGE repertoire. As well as no one expecting Jordi Savall to make a recording of Rite of Spring, no one would expect the musicians mentioned above to make a recording on the Rosary Sonatas by Biber or anything for that matter. The reason is, these musicians after a very fruitful career and a lot of practice have made personal choices and made themselves known for their prefered style of music. My fellow music lovers, old is not better. Old is just old, new is new; simple as that! If we read the history books, classics like Beethoven or even Monteverdi were at times met with suppression and criticism because of their "modernity". It's ironic that we consider classicism in total (not just in the western-classical music) a tradition and a blueprint and any breaking of it is considered a taboo. Now gods forbid if this pride-stricken and toxic tradition is broken by a female artist, or by an LGBTQ+ person! All of hell will fall on their head if they do one "wrong" move. To have any slight interest in modernity, to dress as they wish, to appear with little clothing (even barefoot on the cover of a recording!). This obnoxious female objectification is the so-called professional classical world, Must. Come. To. An. End. Let Alma Mahler be a composer. Let Lara St. John do her album covers as she wishes. Let Yuja Wang simply be. Stop this unfair, perverse and archaic force of misogyny and female sexualization!!! Ending this rant to save my own peace of mind by quoting a KZbin user: "It's just music. Close your eyes and let your ears do the job."

I was there - Sunday night. Saw Yuja for the 1st time with a score in front of her and a page turner. I counted 27 page turns. I wondered how the lady was able to make her concentration with all that percussion sound behind her. Dudamel's set up for the Bartok's #2 was unique. He loaded the left side, just behind Yuja with all the percussion instruments you could think of. I counted 5 cellos, 4 bass, bass drums, snare drum & triangle. The cymbals and snare drum played a huge part, without even mentioning the timpani still ringing in my ears. In front of him are 3 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 3 bassoons, contra bassoon, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, & tuba. Oh, did I also spot a harp on the side? Hmm... Yuja was more than a match for the extraordinary rythmic complexity of the concerto. From the get-go, there was the loud solo trumpet in the beginning and she matched it with a loud piano trill and you could hear a rush of percussive piano chords that her fingers delivered. The combination of Yuja and Dudamel was fiercely dramatic, and I have got to add, the alternating dueling of the timpani and the piano shows the skill of both orchestrator and soloist. Their partnership Sunday night was for the ages. Am glad I saw them both!

Hi Josef ! (Josef Göbbels???Josef Stalin???) GERMANY BERLIN - Cultural radio from the rbb (Berlin - Brandenburg) Philharmonie Berlin - Yuja Wang piano recital Rating: * - - - - (one star of five) Works bei Johannes Brahms: Ballads, Op. 10, No. 1 and 2; Robert Schumann: Kreisleriana, op. 16; Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano sonata No. 29 B flat major, op. 106 - "Hammerklavier-Sonate" With Yuja Wang .... "Apart from the ecores, this evening was an absolute misunderstanding and, unfortunately, one of the worst piano evenings ever." Andreas Göbel, cultural radio 14.06.2016 Kulturradio vom rbb Philharmonie BERLIN >> Klavierabend Yuja Wang Werke Johannes Brahms: Balladen op. 10 Nr. 1 und 2; Robert Schumann: Kreisleriana, op. 16; Ludwig van Beethoven: Klaviersonate Nr. 29 B-Dur, op. 106 - "Hammerklavier-Sonate" Mit Yuja Wang, Klavier Aufführung 13. Kaum unterscheidbar, was Realität, was Phantasie und was Wahnsinn ist.

( Felix Stephan )

Woher kommt deise Krankheit? Was würden alle diese Leute ohne Künstler machen? ..."

She makes classical music fun, again, maybe more than ever. Sexy outfits are no incompatible with great music making. She adds color which has often been lacking-too straight and conformist. "Bela Bartok's first three piano concertos"? He wrote only three concertos. The arrangement of the sonata for two pianos and percussion as " Concerto for Two Pianos, Percussion and Orchestra" doesn't count as the piano part is basically unchanged - it is an expanded "Sonata for two pianos, percussion and orchestra". Otherwise, I would had loved to hear the concerts with Yuja Wang. I heard her stunning performance of Bartók 2 a couple of years ago. (But at least I am going to hear her soon with Rachmaninov 4)

Why is a pianist of her calibre using music? If most artists walked out using music, they'd be laughed off the stage
@b_nadams
@b_nadams 5 жыл бұрын
Gregg Michalak That’s not true. Richter started using music again after a point in his career as he decided to do what he likes. It’s pretty acceptable in chamber music too even though these musicians could probably perform by memory. Pianists usually perform by memory as that is what’s normal and accepted although if they feel like having the music will enhance their performance then it is not unusual for it to be included. However, as music becomes more contemporary, abstract, atonal, and requiring subtle cues between the orchestra and piano such as these Bartok concertos, music is much more commonly used. Playing by memory is not such a big deal, and having the music there isn’t a cop out, it does not prevent memory slips either. Sometimes it can be distracting even, which is also a reason to perform by memory, but this is not so much the case in contemporary works.
@DrDLL99
@DrDLL99 4 жыл бұрын
Because Yuja Wang probably had a week to learn each concerto before performing them. She does this all the time because of her demanding performance schedule, and with contemporary pieces like Bartok's concerto, it's just not practical to memorize them all in such a short period of time.

This playing from memory thing that people so adore is one we must stop paying attention to. Enjoy the music man. How many times has Wang not shown us she can use her surreal memory to entertain us? Forget about whether she's playing from memory or from a book. Being a pianist who plays a lot from memory myself, I know that shouldn't be the goal. The goal of any truly talented pianist is to get sound to represent music in the best way one thinks. We do it in our own way. We know for certain critics would always be there.

@@petersnell3128 A young and highly capable pianist like Yuja should gave absolutely NO problem playing this work from memory. If WE attempted that, we would be scoffed at. Only a pianist of her stature can get away with using music. What does that tell you about these big name artists??

Borda is gone i guess after the money they stole from the Venezuelan children ran out she decided to come back to NY to see what she could steal there, she was there once before. I am telling you that was the biggest classical ponzi scheme ever to hit the US when Gustavo got the LA job then they extended the contract not because he was so great but because it was all in the ponzi scheme, Borda, Gustavo and Abreo got tons of money at the expense of innocent children starving in Venezuela, and here he is collecting off of the yola program, the Madoffs of classical music. shameful

Indeed. If We compare Yuja with other well-know pianist during their 30 years something, we will notice that she is far behind. Argerich and Kissin for example, they had already recorded some of the top-notch legends albuns. She didn't yet recorded anything so top of mind yet. Dudamel is a clown. The real prove that Conducting is the position most easy to produce fake professionals. They did not produce any sound at all, and any professional orchestra can deal without one that can make a difference.

"Nice pianist ..."??? Yes, sex does sell! The down side is it has a tendency to cheapen and degrade at the same time. Pianists such as Yuja Wang and Lang Lang (and Khatia Buniatishvili) seem to be on the same page with regard to their presentation in classical music. One the one hand it is a fabulously tawdry trick to bring in a larger audience, but on the other I suspect most of THAT audience wouldn't even consider coming to their concerts if they weren't so salacious in their presentations!

The Latin spell "In vestimentis non est sapientia mentis" , translated literally, means The wisdom of the mind is not in clothing . The expression is the Latin version of the Italian proverb, the dress does not make the monk . respect for this silly girl??? Surely not acceptable to muck about with Schumann's, Chopin's, Tchaikovsky's, ... music in this way! >Yuja Wang, "Kamasutra" music

I'm sorry I can't. Why must she wear such inappropriate clothing. The composer may appreciate her sound but what would they think if they saw her performing their music in skimpy clothing

Clearly yujas intention to provoke. If you clearly were for the music only you would not set yourself up as a distraction playing it. The public has a right to critique.
