Thank you for respecting the Viola! It is a mathematically imperfect instrument and is incredibly hard to get a good sound out of. Sometimes its not the Violist's fault that it doesn't sound pretty. It is an meant to fill a harmonic role, not a melodic role like the Violin.

I adore you two! :) I just wanted to say that for the classical musicians of the past, especially for Italian musicians, improvising was a normal habit.. unfortunately nowadays it isn't so anymore.

Re hickeys-probably an even bigger factor than practice time OR skin type is: HOW YOU HOLD THE THING! Check it out next time you're in an orchestra or attending the symphony, there is a huge amount of variation, probably more than between players in this aspect than in any other difference (posture/grip upon bow/ and instrument etc). There's type of chin-rest, then the biggie, the type of shoulder-rest; which can range from nothing to enormous and everything between. You've towels/washcloths/sponges and God knows what else! No two "violin hickeys" are perfectly identical. Not in their cause, not their in extent. Lastly, what an enjoyable video! A real treat to watch and listen to. Both having interesting and intelligent things to say, and both with well thought out answers.

If classical musicians couldn't improvise, where would all the composers come from?

I really don't understand viola jokes. I'm neither a violinist nor a violist. The viola makes an amazing sound, especially the C string.

I had kind of a lump for several years from my chin-rest (dermatologist said not to mess with it). One day, when it had kind of become irritated/inflamed, I cleansed it, then applied a VERY hot washcloth thinking that it might sorta "bring it to a head" rather like a pimple. Well, it sure worked, and what came out was more than a teaspoon's worth of a GRITTY PUS that looked like nothing so much as YELLOW TOOTHPASTE! I cleaned it once more with alcohol and, in more than thirty years, have never have had any further problems with it. One more thing which mainly concerns male violinists and violists-and it's even more acute If you began playing prior to and throughout puberty. At at least, two of the points where your instrument is in contact with your neck and chin (it will of course depend on exactly how you position your instrument) you will have a bald patch. If your case is like mine, the skin will be as smooth as your forehead! I quit playing a bit after college, say, age twenty six,; I am now sixty-one and both bald patches are still completely smooth and occupy the same area. Otherwise, however, both my beard and head have a full complement of hair.

watching this late as I just found your channel :) Super interesting Q&A! I laughed hard at the hickey questions LOL 2 cents on improvisation: I think it really really depends on the instrument. If you ask any classical harpist, most learn to improvise since the beginning as we need that skill to play background music at a variety of different events lol But like anything, it's a matter of practice. I totally understand violinists and violists not practicing improv, since you guys have SO MUCH repertoire already.

I wonder if the correlation you both drew between learning music by ear and ability to improvise is documented. For me, sightreading is like a tortuous character-building exercise, but I can usually figuring out music from TV shows is fun. Cool channel btw!! I'll check out Sara's channel as well.

11.45 my dad play jazz and you must improvise in jazz, so he said me , "you must to do jazz with me" but I don't really wanted so he said to me " it's important because if you always have eyes stock on your scorer you will be never able to improvise !!!" So I recently play with him and I'm very bad to improvise, he was right .so I will continues to play with him , maybe one day I will be able to composed.😁😉
