Very interesting as always Ross. My son has just been auditioning for drama school. His top two audition songs were Maria and Gethsemane but he also had Raise a Little Hell and Santa Fe ready in case they asked for something else.

Hello, Ross. One of the things that I love the most about Frank Sinatra is how he made thousands of musical theatre songs his own. His recordings are a wonderful legacy of magically honest performances. I wish there were more jazz and swing rhythms in contemporary musicals. Regarding the Stephen Sondheim musicals, they are certainly full of acting through song moments. I love the Glynis Johns performance of Send In the Clows from A Little Night Music. It is a great example of an excellent thespian bringing a song to life. Regarding the British/European musicals, it is funny that The Phantom of the Opera (Andrew Lloyd Webber) and Les Misérables (Shönberg and Boublil) are the two biggest worldwide successes in a field of predominantly US extravaganzas. And... Yes, ABRSM Singing grades encourage all singers to build up the a cappella singing stamina and repertoire.
