I pretty much grew up on this movie, so I jumped at the chance to see her perform as Audrey in new York in 2015, one of three performances (with Jake Gyllenhaal as Seymour). It was a thing on my bucket list that I didn't know was there, and I'll cherish it for the rest of my days. She was incredible. There is only one Audrey. To date I've refused to see any other productions because no one can live up to her. No one.

What I love about the guy singing, is he could quite easily belt some of those notes such as 'Don't need much Make-up, Don't have to pretend' while I'm sure it's also written that way, it is still understated, showing that this is Audrey's song

Alan Menkin wrote Somewhere that’s Green AND Part of your World from Little Mermaid. The songs are basically the same and interchangeable. Sing it and you’ll see :-). My drag Queen friend Sutton Lee Seymour does a great mash up of the two.

Happy New Year! This is from Hey Mr. Producer, The World of Cameron Macintosh from 1998, 15 years after originally playing Audrey of Broadway in 1982. She want to to reprise the role again in 2015, more than 40 years after creating it at the New York City Center's Encores. She is wonderful! Thanks for this. Little Shop Of Horrors was the first movie I ever saw in THX sound. I had never heard of Ellen Greene, and when she opened up in Suddenly Seymour, I remember it profoundly, because it caught me completely off guard. The only other time someone threw me like that with their unexpected vocal ability was Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago. I'm not saying that CZJ is on the same level as Ellen Greene, but it was another one of those "Where did THAT come from?!" moments. A few years after LSOH, I worked on a movie called Pump Up The Volume that Ellen was in. Unfortunately, it was not a musical :( Stuck in an editing room day in and out watching Ellen Greene not sing! Such a shame...

I love your personality!!! My perception is that she only hints at what her voice is capable of in "Somewhere That's Green" to let us know that the inner strength is there, it just needs proper nourishment which is realized in "Suddenly Seymor". It's a bit of a tease and that much more splendid when her character and spirit are able to finally and fully blossom in S.S..I believe it's completely deliberate and brilliantly calculated. Genius.

You absolutely nailed your review and analysis here. I went back to the original video and cited that something interesting happens during this particular performance. And you said everything I felt as I watched it the first time. Though that crackle in her voice, do you think she did that on purpose, to push beyond just because she put absolutely everything she had into that song, held nothing back, went right to the edge of her atmosphere and then brought it thundering back down in the finale? I'm so happy that I wrote what I did in the comments of the original video (complete with timestamps) and then saw a seasoned professional like you saw all of that and even more...THANK YOU for deepening my love and appreciation of music and that performance.

I think that Audrey has huge aspirations and her obligations and station in life keep her down. Her songs get to reveal just how large a life she wants and why the vocals express the Betty-Boop sound (her oppression) and her real voice of hope (her full throated Broadway vocal). I agree, it's a masterclass in not just singing, but how to bring the character's inner life to the stage. And may I add, this vocal coach has a lovely voice as well.

Love your reaction but just to let you know, if no one else has, this was from a show in London called "Hey! Mr Producer" and was a tribute to Cameron Macintosh and this was one of the shows he produced. Everyone from Bernadette Peters to Judi Dench were performing and it was amazing. I see this show at the Orpheum Theatre in NYC in 1986 when I was at University in NY. She was amazing and she still stuns. I am sad, though, that she has done little else. Oh well.

Can I ask a question, other than the one I just asked? If you are so good at judging other peoples singing and you coach them, then why are you not singing songs for yourself? It must be better financially. I'm guessing that a good singer could easily get into the charts, and that must certainly get more money than the (lets say £100/hour) money you get from coaching. Also coaching someone and then for them to go on to make a few £100K while you only got maybe £2K in coaching fees must be a kick in your self-esteem.

It's pretty much impossible to go from one little cute delicate bwaby vwioce and then into such a huge powerful, almost a bellowing, voice and then back to Bwed time 9:15... Some one so small should not be able to have such huge power. But she does and she does it swapping voices. But in all fairness it's pretty much all she's done. And she's still out there doing it. You'd think that you started at 20 years old, it's now 40 years later and still doing the same shtick . Surely that would have put enough in the bank to last... I have a friend who is a character actor. She'll never be the main person in a movie. Heck, she wont even be a main one in a TV show. But she has done a few decent parts. She still gets royalties off that. And She's done some cop drama, A war drama, I think she was in Line of Duty . It is a really odd feeling. I'll be binge watching a show then all of a sudden I see my pal on the screen and it instantly takes me out of the show. . As long as there is UK gold and whatever other channels that play those old sitcoms constantly, over and over, she might not need never to really work again... the lucky bastard. well I say that... Not long ago she went to vietnam or someplace, Phuket.Thailand? not sure... Anyway, it was her friends hen do. They got really fooked up, all of them ate, snorted, smoked what ever they could get their hands on. While over there being fooked up my pal meets some guy, he's a british lad half her age (she's 43 now, he was 17 she was 33, wow 10 years ago.... Time really flies by when you're old. hehe) but he was living there with the parents. She ends up kissing in the corner of a pub. And she's smitten, but she could not remember his name or number. The next night they are all out again and doing the same old 'take everything' She see's him and they have a bit of a kiss again. This time he writes name and number on a beer mat so she wouldn't forget. So what would any normal person do with a beer mat with a name and number written on it by someone you have only ever seen twice in your entire life and 90% of that time was kissing. And not talking! Is the most sensible thing to go to a 24 hour tattoo shop and have the name and number permanently tattooed on the her neck, at the front under her chin.... ? They were leaving that day, what the fook did she think would happen? Some how this guy who is half her age and who she'd only seen twice for a total of less than 3 hours and most of them evolved kissing and fumbling about. Did she honestly think he'd come to the airport to say goodbye, see the scribbled tattoo on her neck and think it was romantic and insta fall in love and come to the UK with her and live in her shoe box apartment that is literally 1 room. TV, sofa, bed, cooker, toilet... It's just one open plan. I think it's 30 foot x 30 foot square. and regardless of how odd it is that everyone has to piss and shit in the back corner.. There's a big cotton sheet if we need to use the toilet we just sit on the bowl and put the big sheet over our head. We tend not to go her house much. But it's worth a couple of million. It's near Elephant and Castle or something. I just know that one of other friends searched for the prices. And it's hers. there's no rent or owt. But she does have a name and number that honestly looks like a 5 year old has scribbled it permanently on her neck. It's really bad. Probably why the acting gig dried up. hahaha. She's in VFX now. The tattoo was laser removed. Funny how it cost less than £2 to have it done but then cost just over £8000 to have it undone. And she's half asian so her skin is a perfect sultry, mysterious, exotic, brown/beige/tan colour. Apart from her neck which has a lot of scarring and insult to injury when you try to laser remove a tattoo off a beautiful dark skin then it's not just the ink it removes, it also removes the dark colour pigment also. She'll be fine. a little dab of dark foundation makes it impossible to see. She's talking about getting another tattoo. But not like the last. Its some medical tattoo they use in plastic surgery. They are just going to re-colour her skin so it matches.

The play is so much better than the movie version - even if you find it with the real (the plants win) ending - and predated it by a couple years. Stop acting as if the movie version is the definitive. As for the contrast between the baby voice and the more mature voice, I think it's as much a matter of Audrey's mind breaking out of the infantalized state she's been in, accepting an abusive relationship for so long.
