I feel like musicals have sort of split into this... on one side, Great Comet/Hadestown/Six/Life On Mars sort of thing that just sort of retreads territory that used to be avant-garde but isn't really all that avant-garde anymore but it still *feels* avant-garde to people who want to *feel* avant-garde which, these prove, that feeling is separate from actually *being* new (when Rent did it, it was new, and Hair before that... Waiting for Godot and things like that also belong to this category, I think, and I would put Into the Woods, and most of Sondheim, here too...); And on the other side, this "classic-of-classic-of-classic" feeling, Gershwin, Hello Dolly, My Fair Lady, big elaborate revivals of all those kinds of things that have those people who can do those amazing dance things, yes, (like the She Loves Me clip here, and also Daniel Radcliffe in HTSIB), but like... you *can have all of that with a newer style of thing...* And then the like... plot, character, emotion musicals, things like Les Miz, things that have more depth, like... Les Miz itself still gets play because it's Les Miz, but the only thing people talk about with Anastasia is Ramin's belt at the end, the only time people talk about Jesus Christ Superstar anymore is the belting, no one talks about Aida, I mean I guess because these things are 10+ years old, but there aren't a lot of new musicals that have that kind of ... wholeness that these things have, to me at least... or new books, movies, anything that has it... which is why I'm focusing on 2.5D instead of western media nowadays I guess. I feel like you could make a chart of like... I'm struggling to find words to label the axes, but I'm seeing the "classic-of-classic-of-classic" things in one corner, Hadestown and Hair in the opposite corner, Rent and Les Miz together in one of the remaining corners, Phantom and Wicked sort of half-way between the Rent/Les Miz corner and the Classic corner, Sondheim halfway between the Rent/Les Miz corner and the Hadestown/Hair corner... maybe Elisabeth would be the exact center, or maybe it's closer to the Classic--LesMiz axis, but closer to the Hadestown/Hair point than Phantom and Wicked are. Anyway, western theater lovers should give 2.5D a chance (anime-style stage plays in Japan). If you like things in the Rent/Les Miz corner, I feel like that sphere has more to offer in that corner nowadays... I guess you could call it degrees of abstraction vs. realism. Two different versions of what "abstraction" could mean. fff this is too long already, I'll stop. But each category is the extreme of abstraction or realism in one axis, and right in the center of the other (like, a philosophical realism...?) I mean, all of these works are unique, I shouldn't try to sort them.
