I just ordered the inexpensive Hluru tongue drum, 5 minutes ago, and I was like "OMG what if it sounds like garbage?!!?". So I found your videos here, and it put my worries to rest. No, it doesn't sound as full as the other ones, but this is my first one, and I just want something to noodle around with. Thanks for taking the time!

The difference? About a grand. In al seriousness, I think the tongue drum is the way to go first. And if your interest does not wane, then save for the hand pan. If you really love the art, you’re going to want to keep both instruments anyway and will likely collect them over time. Consider the tongue drum an investment and “gateway” instrument into the field.

t my first drum it is Rav Vast Integral B scale Rav Vast RAV2 21" hand pan steel tongue drum. It's mesmerizing but not very loud. I bought this scale because it sounds like the place you get to when you are deep in mediation and u have arrived in the center and are floating. the integral B scale doesn't seem to play well with my drum mate she has a d major scale hang pan like your entre level one here in the video. I felt a little like I made the wrong choice in drums because she gets such a louder sound. However, after seeing your video I realize I did not. I may just need to invest in mallets thank you for the video Molly keep up the great work

Could you elaborate more? For example what is the difference in playing them not considering sound? Which is easier to play? Can you Tune a hand pan? I prefer the sound of hand pan but because of costs I guess I’ll first learn the cheaper tongue drum? Does that make sense?

If the newly ordered handpan came with traces of rust-like patches (it is colored in navy), and the turn at the neck shows the inside may have the dusty patches (similar to rust), is it a concern and a reason to return? Or is oiling it and caring properly going to make it last well? This was a gift, and it’s my first handpan too, in the mid tier cost (600s).
@DYNABIKE1 Жыл бұрын
I'm pricing each type and find the Hand Pans are way more expensive for a low end one. Thats why I'm hear to see the differences. Too much sustain sound on that expensive Tongue one for Me. Glad I got to hear it.

In what tone is your Kosmosky tongue pan?
@bencunningham-storyteller78622 жыл бұрын
What does it mean when you say harmonics built in?
@MusicalMollyKhan2 жыл бұрын
So a tongue drum "tone field" (which is each of the circles) is tuned to 3 different notes usually. Cheaper Handpans will only tune 1 or 2 notes in there, but the characteristic handpan sound comes from the 3 tuned notes resonating together in each time field.

@@MusicalMollyKhan with the different sizes what is the range without a mic for indoors or out. For a crowd of about 25-100 people, or 100-200 people. and sometimes 500 plus? Would a 12 or 16'' be good without a mic 100-200 size crowd.

Great comparison! I would love to learn the handpan but a bit worried about disturbing my neighbours! Do you know how much the sound travels through walls of an older building? Or whether it's possible to hire one to try it out? Also, once the handpan goes a bit out of tune is it possible to tune it or do you have to buy a new one? Thanks
@travv882 жыл бұрын
I'd say get a cheap one and give it a go. If you're worried about neighbors just don't play really early or late. I think you'll find they won't mind.
@TwilightMysts2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure with the mass produced handpans, but I believe with the artisan handpans you send them back to the maker to be re-tuned (for a price unfortunately).

@Neon_Nyanian2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, those things can easily range $1000-3000 USD. I've been reading about them recently to better understand, and heard that some of the best are often individually hand crafted per order, and can take 1-3 months to finish. You can, of course, probably find some manufactured types that are cheaper... But I take the fact that they're generally much larger, more fragile, and made from precisely shaped metal rather than cut holes to all factor into why they're in the 'fancy instrument' price range.
@stephylova582 жыл бұрын
I've been trying to see maybe a Hand pan that sounds similar to a Handpan.. its sad that with every thing going on most the most beautiful drums are in Russia or ukraine.Ukraine.. etc so I feel it's risky to buy from them
