If you don’t mind showing how to master it properly. I’ve been making mashups for a while but just started DJing and haven’t yet found the sweet spot on how far to allow my master to red line. Sometimes it’s too quiet and sometimes it just sounds really distorted

Loving these tutorials man! I always find a touch of side chain compression on the acapella works wonders too especially if the vocals are over a really busy super saw type breakdown. Let's the instrumental breathe a bit more :)

this was a great help, nothing like learning new tricks in your 40's. I am using ableton to recreate some of my mashups i used to do live using vinyl 20 years ago, however I want to do a bit more with the vocals than just pasting them to a track, as effective this is, do you have any videos on this?

Sir, you have a new subscriber! Amazing video! There is not much videos about making a mashups out there (at least not good one). Thanks for sharing this tutorial. I just have one question. I also heard that it's not good to put a limiter on the master channel. But what should I do when it's clipping? Usually it's not clipping during the breakdown but it's clipping during the build up. Sometimes even 2-3db. What am I supposed to do? You also faced some clipping in this tutorial. Is it going to sound distorted once when I bounce it out and play it in the club? Any advice? Thanks in advance! 🙏🏻

Thank you so much for the kind words! For mashups I never use a limiter on the master and just go to ear for levels on the acapella. My process is more detailed for actual productions but I don't spend a lot of time on mashups :)

Why when I use "warp from here straight" in some songs it just fucks up the whole song, it somewhat fast forwards it? Anywho, I'm new at this, but i'm just trying to mix some songs i like and learning along the way. Thanks for any help !

Great video! I just started my 90 day free Abelton Live 10 trial today! Obviously I’m not a master yet but it seems to be coming fairly quickly for me. My main struggle is finding a cappella . Is there a way on Abelton to put a song in and separate the vocals from the music so I can use the vocals from song A and beat/instruments from song B? Or do you have any website recommendations for downloads? Thank you!

During the mashup, the volume meter in the master channel is red. Does that matter? I know using a limiter would fix this but you advised against using a limiter but does the red mean its unsafe for speakers or something?
@davidmcclone830

This is how I busted my laptop speakers when I first started mixing. I was curious about basically the same thing. Why not use a limiter? I'd think that it would peak way too often, therefore you'd have to reduce the volume of the track. I'm a noob, but if you could explain it'd be appreciated. Thanks for the tutorial!

Anyone on here know if a midi controller helps with making a mash up? I’m just starting out so wondering if a controller is more for speeding things up, which I don’t need yet as I’m still learning. But if it would save some frustration, maybe it’s a good investment.

J-Dub Music cool! That would be awesome! One thing I think might help (me, maybe others too) is making it a bit more textbook. Providing an acapella and an instrumental to download. It’s up to you, you’re the pro, but for me, then I would have something to copy and it just takes away a few frustrating hassles so the focus can be on the exercises (phasing out, eq etc). Just my two cents, either way, I’d be keen. Also looking forward to going to one of your shows. Cheers

When you go 'Complex Pro' - make sure the formants is set to 0.00 / It does smooth the transients a little, I do use 'Beats' mode on some percussion + always kicks when I produce to preserve the transients. I hope that helps answer your question 😊
