Hello, Mattie! [Music by Mattie Reacts!] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Helsinki, Finland in 2005 ("End Of An Era" live DVD), together with Marco Hietala, bassist and singer of the band. The band performed this cover when the female singer of the band at the time, Tarja Turunen, was backstage, changing her wardrobe. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile). There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I just posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: www.youtube.com/@gabriel.bardac/community 🤘

The recording is from 2005. The singer/bassist is Marko Hietala, a legend of Finnish rock and metal. He's "only" the backup singer though, it's a female fronted band. Jukka (the drummer) was suffering from insomnia already back then. As somebody with the same problem, I can tell you that it's possible to keep going and be very focused and energetic for short periods of time, but normally you feel like a zombie and want to use every opportunity to take a rest, even if it's just a few seconds. This band is legendary. I suggest you check out some more of their songs.

@@drafter3412 I can relate to that. I've been working as a blacksmith while having migraine attacks. Slamming the anvil is not that dissimilar to slamming the drums, and pretty metal too. Requires a decent sense of rhythm as well. At some point you just enter some sort of trance when you're not feeling anything anymore, no ache, no nothing. The worst comes afterwards. It's only so long you can keep going before your batteries get drained, and you can't recharge them getting 2 hours of sleep at most. Jukka is a beast - to have lasted that long before stepping away from drumming. I've heard he's better now.

@@Wolf-ln1mlJust an FYI that's more or less been disproved as rumor. There was an interview with Marko about the same time as this show when he talked about having a minor headache, some think that's where the rumor started. There's no record of Jukka or the band ever saying he had a migraine during this show. There are some other performances where Jukka ducts down briefly during parts of songs. I'm certainly not claiming to know for a fact that he didn't have migraine but have seen multiple comments stating firmly that he did not.

For all my life (67y old Dutch bloke) I am a fan of Pink Floyd and have see them several times. A song I always loved and is on my all time playlist. Nightwish did not cover this one, this is the ultimate tribute from an exceptional band to a exceptional band. Nightwish, by the way, I only started following after seeing Floor Jansen participating in Beste Zangers. Nightwish and Floor now belong to my category of exceptional bands/musicians (Queen/Freddy Mercury, David Bowie, Santana, Bob Marley, Frank Zappa, U2, Cranberries, The Cure). And seen them all in my younger years, and many more. And later on got to know Sabaton, Ayreon, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Kamelot, Toehider, Avantasia. All because of me liking Floor and Nightwish.

I know a lot of NW fans love this performance with Tarja, but I simply cannot take her live singing. I like much of her studio work where it seems like producers dial back her operatic affectation (or style if you prefer); it makes me cringe. I admit I am a Floor fan, and would rather listen to her and Henk port sing this song, and only wish she and Marko would have performed this together before he left the band. I missed opportunity.

The beauty of Nightwish is that all the bandmembers play what the song needs and are true masters on their instruments. There are no ego's. They're a Finnish symfonic metal band. This song/concert was performed in 2005. After this concert they fired their first singer as they couldn't work with her, and her husband/manager. anymore. Perhaps because of that and the meaning of the lyrics Marko put all their frustration in this song. Tuomas, the keyboardpayer, writes most of their songs. Marko, the bassist, wrote also a few songs but in Jan 2021, after 20 years, he stepped back from NW, which we fans respect but we're sorry he left. If you like to explore more of them please react to "Ghost Love Score" Live at Wacken 2013 with their 3rd and current leadsinger Floor Jansen (Dutch), a true epic song! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIrNenx-jKd0jNE At the end Marko said "Kiitos", Finnish for "Thank you".

Welcome to the magical world of Nightwish! A few words about the band's musicians. Tuomas Holopainen is the band's lyricist - composer genius. You could also perhaps say artistic director. For a long time he had three keyboards, now on this year's tour only two. That one.which is on his side is in a stand made by his technician and the hands are ergonomically in a better position for playing. Drummer Jukka Nevalainen. He tends to lean over the drums, often when there is a moment in the song when the drums are not played. He has had the habit for years. He just kind of goes out of the picture for a while and lets others perform in the meantime. Guitarist Emppu Vuorinen. He often uses the tapping method in his solos. Bassist Marko Hietala. Is basically the band's so-called second singer. In the band, the lead singer is a woman. But Marko is an extremely good singer, bassist and guitarist.

I believe he retreated from performing and being in the public view entirely for at least a year to re-evaluate his life and career to date. Maybe I'm an optimist, but I don't have heard anything about him being in conflict with Nightwish. Maybe in a couple of years he may feel again up to performing and return to Nightwish, maybe not.

Great analysis! I have subbed so you can react to Ghost Love Score 2013 in Waken. P.s. Marko (who just sang) is my favorite male vocalist. Currently they have a female vocalist who is also my favorite. Enjoy the ride!

Great reaction! Nightwish is a Finnish Symphonic metal band. You will have to listen to some of their other songs. The amazing thing to me about this performance is that it does not feature their lead singer. In addition to their instrumental play they are known for a strong female lead singer. They have had 3 in their 20 plus years as a band and the current singer, Floor Jansen, is phenonmenal.

There is a singer of another band (Devin Townsend) that once called out the audience for clapping the wrong tempo. In his song called "Deadhead", live at the Royal Albert Hall, he told the crowd "anytime you feel like it, pick a tempo...". From a sound engineers point of view that might just be a very interesting performance to react to as well. Devin is an amazing vocalist and guitar player, best known for the "wall of sound" he creates in his songs. Just like Nightwish the Devin Townsend Project is known for their amazing live shows, often with a great audio mixing quality.

Nice reaction. Nightwish is a band that you want to see live, they are better live than in the studio. I saw them live 2 wks ago and it was awesome. They are from Finland. You heard the singer say kiitos (pron. Keetos like cheetos with a k) which is the Finnish word for Thank you. They did this song because they liked it, but they have a 20+ yrs catalogue of awesome music that will cover just about every sort of metal you can dream about. And even though you heard Marko singing here, they are a female fronted band. Floor is even a better singer than Marko, her range in a few octaves goes from growling to full blown operatic. I'd say check them out you won't regret it, they have a lot to offer.🤘🏽

It should be mentioned that Nightwish is typically fronted by by woman, and this is the only concert video I've ever seen in which it is only the male members of the band performing. This was video was recorded in 2005 or '06. The main singer at this time was Tarja Turunen, who was dismissed from the band after this concert. Tarja was replaced by Anette Olzen, was later replaced due to illness by the current singer, Floor Jansen during the middle of a concert tour in 2012. In my opinion, NW saved the best for last, because Floor is amazing and is an absolute treasure. Marko Hietala, singer and bass player here tragically left the band in 2020 due to conflict with the record label. His voice and presence is truly missed. Regardless, you should check out NW, starting with the incredible 2013 Wacken Festival (headliners) performances. You can find videos for every one of their songs performed there on KZbin.

Welcome to the magical and fantastic world of Nightwish! Starting with High Hopes is totally uncommon, because it is a tribute where Marko (he is not the singer *lol*) is shining ;D - the current singer is the goddess valkyrie Floor Jansen, and at this concert it was the last one of Tarja, the queen of Metal. To get a REAL IDEA you have to react to "Ghost Love Score" Wacken 2013. You will be surprised completly and you will fall into the deepest rabbit hole you can imagine.

One of my favorites from Nightwish who almost never play ‘covers’, they themselves call this a tribute. Since 10 years they have an unbelievable from woman called Floor Jansen who can sing anything she wants. To see her abilities and feel the way she sings to your soul watch ‘Ghost Love Score’ from Wacken 2013. If you, like it, just follow Gabriel’s list for more amazement! 🙋🏼‍♀️

HI. I quickly browsed through the comment section, and I couldn't find anyone mention the drummer's (Jukka) problem with migraines and insomnia. What is told of this concert (End og and Era 2005) is that Jukka had severe migraines, and actually rested on the toms when he had breaks. You can see it on his face that he really fights and struggles through this whole show. Several years later, in 2014, he resigned from the band because of these personal challenges. The current drummer in NW is Kai Hahto, Jukka's mentor and good friend. The silver lining here is that Jukka isn't really gone. He manages the administrative stuff around Nightwish..

For many that's what it is like discovering Nightwish and their 25 year old discography of mind-blowing music that still remains hidden in plain sight to so many. I still shake my head in disbelief. Great analysis btw, I've subbed for more.

It's interesting that this is one of the few Nightwish performances without female on stage, since they're female-lead symphonic metal band since 1996 and probably the best at it. Marko, the singer and bassist, is "just" a backup singer, even if he's a metal legend for over 40y. That's how good they are.

Really loved your reaction. I believe this was the last concert Tarja their first vocalist performed. Tarja was doing a wardrobe change while the Bassist Marko was singing. Yes Marko is also a lead vocalist but on Nightwish he mostly acts as a backing vocalist. Jukka pronounced Yukka no longer plays drums because of health issues. He suffered from insomnia from years of migraines and back issues. His friend and fellow drummer Kai from the band Wintersun now drums for Nightwish and Jukka still works for the band but in the background. Floor Jansen ( Yansen ) is there latest vocalist. Thank you for your reaction.

This was not a cover but a Tribute! Remember, this was LIVE! Even the lighting was a tribute to Pulse. The drummer, Jukka, had a stress and insomnia induced migraine - and STILL didn't miss a beat! Just before you stopped it, Tuomas (on keys) gave a sideways nod for Emppu on guitar (sweaty man) to check on him! They were all stressed, they fired their first singer at the end of this gig. Marko had to relearn to sing after a botched throat surgery almost took his voice completely! Kiitos = thank you, in Finnish!

Fun fact: Marko Hietala, who has since retired from Nightwish and pretty much all public performance except for specific things like Northern Kings, was for almost 20 years just the "backup" singer. Nightwish has always featured a female lead singer, and is currently on their third (and, personal opinion here, best), Floor Jansen. Tarja Turunen was the original until disagreements between her and Tuomas Holopainen ("The Metal Mozart," leader of the band, founder, main songwriter/composer, and keyboardist) and the rest of the band caused them to dismiss her. It led Tuomas down a VERY dark path because he had known Tarja for a long time, they were close friends, and he committed "musical suicide" in the song The Poet And The Pendulum (which is well worth reacting to as your next reaction, especially the live at Wembley Arena version). The next singer was Annette Olzon of Sweden, who lasted with the band for two albums (Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum) before being dismissed halfway through the Imaginaerum tour because she was going super-diva on the rest of the band. As she was dismissed after "The Denver Miracle," which was a one-off Nightwish concert in Denver, Colorado, that featured a quickly slapped together playlist, the singers from opening band Kamelot (Elize Ryd of Amaranthe and Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy), and the crowd themselves singing to make it a once-in-a-lifetime-special concert, the band literally had two days of travel until their next stop, and so with a phone call and a plane ticket, Floor Jansen was flown over from The Netherlands, quite literally learning the entire setlist in 48 hours, which is the name of the documentary about it, "Please Learn The Setlist In 48 hours." Before she was officially made a member of the band, Nightwish performed the Wacken 2013 Open Air concert, which is, to borrow the Dr Who term, a "fixed point in time." There is pre-Wacken 2013, and post-Wacken 2013, in the Nightwish timeline. It was, quite simply, a perfect production. Sound was on point. Lights were perfect. 80,000+ fans all going absolutely mental during every song. The band not missing a beat, a note, or headbang. Floor busting out the famous "Dutch Windmill" headbang during most tracks. It was glorious, and the entire concert is worth reacting to, as it is the concert that the most reacted to Nightwish song ever, Ghost Love Score, was perfectly played at. The band has since had a couple more changes, with Marko retiring and being replaced by Jukka Koskinen of Wintersun, and Jukka Nevalainen, the drummer in this video, being forced to medically retire after severe insomnia and worsening health (mental and physical) because of it, being replaced by "The Human Metronome" that is Kai Hahto (also of Wintersun, who can keep absolutely perfect time even during blastbeats (Sons of Winter and Stars by Wintersun = worth reacting to as well)).

The Drummer - Jukka - was suffering from a heavy bout of migraine during this concert ...... leaning over his kit grasping at his head may very well be an attempt to relieve the pain. This isn't a "cover", it is an homage. They are Finnish, he said kiitos (thanks). By the way Marko is not normally the lead singer of the band. Tarja the lead singer at this time was back stage changing her dress while he sang this. If you want to hear more Marko I would recommend from this End of an Era concert "Wish I Had an Angel" or "Phantom of the Opera", "The Islander" from Tampere or "While Your Lips Are Still Red" frpm Wembley

This cover is close to the original. Another new one is Phantom of the Opera from the same concert. The bass player sings the phantom here and it wasn't intended that way. NIGHTWISH - The Phantom Of The Opera (OFFICIAL LIVE) Also because of the singer is different: Nightwish - Over The Hills And Far Away (DVD End Of An Era) HD Floor Jansen also has a few covers of her own on her channel. Then there's still time for Ghost Love Score. NIGHTWISH - Ghost Love Score (OFFICIAL LIVE)
