I have always loved this version with all those delicious harmonies but the live version in Montreal 1981 is also awesome. Freddie singing live is something to behold which you haven't experienced yet! I honestly don't know which one I prefer. The live version makes you appreciate the different arrangement of the song to suit the stage show and really highlights what good musicians they all are individually and collectively. Such a tight band with such a vast and varied repertoire.

The guitar Brian May plays in this video is "The Red Special". Him and his father built that guitar from scratch in the garage when he was 16 or 17. Now Brian May is an astrophysicist. And Freddie Mercury - best male vocalist of our time - there's No discussion!

I am the first to comment! So exciting! I recently discovered your channel and became a subscriber. An official boomer at 61 years of age, it is an amazing experience to share in young music lovers discovering the greatest artists in the genre. Kudos to you, Rere, for launching onto this journey with an open mind and heart. IMO, one does not have to love (or even like) every genre, song, or artist to appreciate the talent. Plus, it is wise to explore the music of the past if for no other reason than to comprehend the evolution of music. Knowledge is always a good thing! "Somebody to Love" is a wonderful song by one of the best rock bands to ever exist. This one was written by Freddie Mercury (the lead singer and pianist) after being inspired by gospel music and specifically the great Aretha Franklin. ALL the members of Queen are exceptional, but Freddie Mercury (RIP) was incomparable as a singer, songwriter, and undisputed greatest frontman ever. I believe Queen remains the only band where all four of the members wrote #1 hits. I may be the first to comment, but will not be the only one to STRONGLY recommend following this reaction with the live performance of "Somebody to Love" from 1981 in Montreal. Seriously, that performance is considered amongst the top 10 live performances ever by any band, topped only by Queen's performance at Live Aid in 1985. The latter is a must see as well. Carry on in your quest!

Only the Beatles have all been inducted as both band members and individual artists, and every one of them had at lest one number one hit. Great reaction to a great song , now you must react to the live version in Montreal in 1981, as a musician I am sure you will appreciate just how amazing queen were as a live band, remember that this is 1981 and long before autotune and other gimmicks now used in modern day music production, this is just four talented guys producing one of their greatest hits live , Freddie s vocals are phenomenal as are the backing vocals of drummer Roger Taylor who also has a magnificent voice in his own right. I look forward to your future queen reactions, you have so many ahead of you , a must see is their live aid performance from Wembley in 1985 which I was fortunate enough to attend as a young 24 years old, now many years later as a 63 year old I still listen to queen daily and still enjoy watching younger generations experience queen and their timeless music for the first time , please keep the reactions coming.

The members of the band queen went to different colleges. Brian May the lead guitarist attended London Imperial College and got a degree in astrophysics. He utilized his astrophysics knowledge to create many of the different sounds in Queen’s songs. Roger Taylor went to school for dentistry. John Deacon, the bassist, went to college for electronics. Freddy Mercury, of course the lead singer and who plays multiple instruments moved with his family from India to London in 1964, where he attended the Ealing College of Art.

I don't know why but every time I watch this video, it hits me like a ton of bricks that the weird, goofy looking guitarist rockstar is now an astrophysicist...and from what I've seen he's seems like one of the nicest people on earth. Queen was my very first concert back in 1977! Pure joy! It would be difficult to find a song/performance to top this one, but I think I can come very close with 2 performances from QUEEN! The first is a song from the same album as "Somebody To Love", and it's from the 1976 LIVE performance at Hyde Park of "You Take My Breath Away". The second is the performance of "White Queen" (LIVE at the Hammersmith Odeon 1975). ☮

Funny thing, when Queen first came out, even after the success of thier first two LP's, the critics panned them and claimed they wouldn't last..shows what they knew. Good summation...with all the over the top PC nowadays, I don't know how you young folk find a lifetime lover, but everyone still wants one. Lead singer Freddie mercury is considered by many to be the best male vocalist of all time, but i would go one further and say hes the best vocalist of all time. The crazy thing is he never had any formal voice training. He spent a little time in the school choir as a kid, but apart from that he was 100% self taught, im sure its the same with his piano skills as well, but dont quote me on that one. The rest of the band is amazing as well, the drummer probably could of been the lead singer for just about every other band in the world apart from queen. All of them are quality musicians, also my prayers go out to guitarist Brian May, who apparently took a bad turn a few days ago 🙏.

Queen is very elaborate in the studio and their versions are often quite different from the live versions - - because they improvise and there is no nonsense equipment - only voices and instruments - no enhancements - did not exist - - and wasn't needed - only 4 very gifted musicians, composers, songwriters - they all wrote no. 1 hits - were all inducted in songwriters hall of fame - you just embarked on a long journey . Queen were Freddie Mercury (Lead Vocals), Brian May (Lead Guitar and Vocals), John Deacon (Bass Guitar and Vocals) and Roger Taylor (Drums and Vocals). Queen as they were performed from 1970-1991, sadly Freddie Died from Pneumonia resulting from AIDS aged just 45 years old. I suggest you watch some of their live performances as they are one of the bands that are better live than in the studio. May I also suggest that you react to the Finnish band Nightwish and their Dutch singer Floor Jansen. Nightwish are what is called Symphonic Metal and were one of the first in the genre where they do metal style music with a full orchestra backing (they use the London Philomonic Orchestra amongst others). Maybe start with where most reactors start, which is Ghost Love Score Live at Wacken 2013 (if I can I will link it at the bottom). I think you will enjoy it.
