I think that’s Simon Petrén. Basically the fourth member of DL. He’s pretty accomplished as well. 😆 “Simon Petrén (born 14 March 1986) is a Swedish music producer, songwriter, mix engineer and mastering engineer. He holds a Diploma in Piano Music Performance at the Royal Schools of Music in London and a Bachelor degree in Film Scoring and Music Production at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.”

I think this song come from the Japanese version of the "Loopified" album. It is a cover of a song from some Japanese artist .
@florida0092
@florida0092 2 жыл бұрын
You’re correct Micael. For some reason there was a Japanese version of Loopified and it included some additional songs, of which Automatic is one. The album is incredibly difficult to find and Automatic is only available on the Japanese version of Spotify.
@Nostaljack
@Nostaljack 2 жыл бұрын
@@florida0092 I bought the Japanese version of the album because it was available first. I'd heard enough of their covers and I was too obsessed to wait for the U.S. version. Glad I did too. I ended up with this tune. I love this like I love all the others. The original tune (by Utada Hikaru) is very much just an R&B slow jam. This is...not...LOL!
@florida0092
@florida0092 2 жыл бұрын
@@Nostaljack That’s awesome, I went as far as trying to hack Spotify into believing I was in Japan and then get the album onto my playlist. Where’s the Beat is another gem on that one. A crazy slap-you-in-da-face song that is impossible to categorize.

I just read that Automatic is a cover of a Utada Hikaru song. So strange! I was about to write in the live chatt that the chorus reminds me of another song. I now I know why! Yeah, I totally agree. This is part infusing pop like music with more complex chordal stuff, part sneaking jazzy stuff into the mainstream. It's kinda like Charlie Puth sneaking in five note chords or like major11 chords into songs that are obviously pop, or Jacob Collier sneaking wonky grooves or phrygian licks into his latest songs. Even if this isn't these guys' intention, it sure is nice to listen to.

I love all music but lean towards Prog. I have to thank the covid lock down for expanding my appreciation for bands i would not normally listen to. The first time i heard Snarky Puppy was a game changer. While i dont always love everything you or other reactors highlight, i always go in now with an open mind. That is how i stumbled upon DL. I never knew that Jazz Pop Fusion was something i was missing. I'm ok with Pop music when the musicianship is this high and i dont know that i consider DL pop. Current music on the radio does little for me and i find my self on the "Oldies" stations - the 80s and 90s lol.

Another great reaction! I don't know if you're into Gino Vannelli or not, but if so, would you consider reacting to songs from his very jazz influenced Yonder Tree CD, or the live versions from his Live in LA DVD of either Brother To Brother or Appaloosa ( there are live videos from that DVD up on KZbin... thank you!)

@Ben , I could not agree more on Gino Vannelli, a very underrated singer. Unfortunately he got some visibility when he moved on "rocky" Black Cars, I'm quite sure he did just to try to get a bit more of success...way far from Brother to Brother, thats the GV flagship! In my channel you may see a couple of video I took by myself in Italy and France live concert

I'm in tune with the comments below. Such an amazing band but who is the mystery man in the background who plays brilliant keys support to Jonah on keys but never seems to get any credit. I know Kristian Kraftling is one session player for them. are there others I wonder?
@lottawiklund8606
@lottawiklund8606 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they've had different auxilliary keyboard players for their live gigs. Kristian Kraftling is, I think, the one who's been with them the most, but this looks like it could be Arvid Svenungsson. Their mixer/co-producer Simon Petrén has played with them a fair bit, and there has been some other keyboard players as well. I guess it's all up to who is available at the time of the live gigs. They do get some credit though, as DL always presents them by name when doing the live gigs, and also has them bow with them when recieving the applauses after the gig.

I think these guys are pop-y enough in that Jacksonian way so that most pop fans probably won't even realize they've been progged. The more difficult accomplishment, in my estimation, is to get us snobs whose bar was set way high by Zappa and King Crimson to jump out of our seats screaming, "WTF!!!" and dance our ancient asses off!
