Hawaii had only become a state in August 1959. They were eager to promote tourism with this movie....it worked! Please watch the entire movie, it's really funny...and Elvis is awesome in it....he was only 26 yrs old.

Blue Hawaii was one of Elvis' biggest box office grosses. And the most successful soundtrack of his career, toping the charts for over a year. Yet it was a double edged sword for Elvis' movie career. The legendary Hollywood producer, Hal Wallis used the studio's profits from this and his other films to finance major dramas with other Hollywood stars much to Elvis's dismay. With the success of Elvis' post army films, they knew putting him in tropical locals singing love songs to pretty women was the formula for blockbusters. While Elvis was paid a ton of money, it came at the cost of letting him grow as an actor. And this troubled him for the rest of his life. He does a nice live version of this song in his last TV Special in 1977.

Dear John, I love watching you and listening to you, especially when you play ELVIS. I have commented to you before giving you many compliments and I will continue to do so. As I told you before (and I know you do not remember) but I watch you as much as I can. I also told you that I have been an Elvis fan for 61 years....yes, I am now 71 but have terminal cancer and do not know if I will see my 72nd birthday August. This is one of my favorite songs and it should have been my "Wedding Song" back in '77. Yeah John you was talking about the Hawaiian wedding song and you said it Elvis looked good and the girl was pretty too and I thought to myself that she wasn't as pretty as Elvis but you know he sings that little bit apart in Hawaii we got the little bit of part of Germany and wooden heart and in this movie fun and Acapulco which you ought to watch he does Spanish and I'm not sure of the movie that has Santa Lucia on it but that's Italian and it's now or never is O Sole Mio which is Italian so just think of all the choices that Elvis could have social like I said I still haven't seen the movie but if Colonel Parker would have really promoted Elvis I just pop in wherever I can find a spot when you're not doing a song AKA it was Junkie
