Ghost won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Song 2016 with Cirice. The title is a old english word for church and has a very specia meaning if you read the lyrics. l

James Hetfield played a cover of this and basically discovered Ghost and had them go on tour with Metallica. Ghost IS Swedish, so of course there’s always a bit of ABBA influence. They even did a cover of ABBA, I think, on their second album, “I’m a Marionette.”

‘Cirice ’ (suhr-EECE) is an Old English word for ‘church’. The concept of the song is: the church is meant to be the ‘bride’ of God., according to Catholic dogmatic tradition. Tobias’ lyrics are written from the perspective of Lucifer, asking the ‘woman’ Cirice to join him, as-unlike God-he accepts her without judgment, ‘scars’ of sin and all. It’s really quite a clever little tune. This was Ghost’s best period for lyrics, IMO. *infestissumam* and *Meliora*. Top bloody lyrics on both records.

My favorite line in this song is "I know you're not tainted, even though you've been told so" It's a direct repudiation of the Catholic doctrine of Original Sin.

Interesting fact: Tobias Forge the lead singer, is actually playing all the instruments in the studio version I believe

Not intirely true. Ludvig Kennberg plays the drums.

@@magnusblomqvist966 in about half of their songs Tobias plays all the instruments

@@ezekielv2479 Generally Tobias played guitar and bass but passed on instruments he wasn't very skilled on (like drums, keyboard, and classical guitar) to better professionals while still writing all of the parts. On Impera he hired Fred from Opeth to do the guitar as well because he's been so busy with running the entire operation that he's out of practice and was writing parts too complex for him to play well.

@@chitoryu12 He did play bass on Impera/Phantomine, however. His line in Phantom is killer.

The lead singer was a bassist in the last band he was in….Seems like he always makes sure it sounds great now in ghost lol

He never really wanted to be the singer for Ghost, he just couldn't find anyone else who wanted to do it.

Cirice (sa-reese). Look up the live concert version of this classic, it always starts off with the dueling Ghouls (Aether and Fire/Dewdrop)

Funny you mentioned Volbeat going on tour with Ghost... I bought tickets to see Ghost but had no idea who Volbeat was. I've since heard a couple of their songs. I love the new one, _Shotgun Blues,_ but nothing else has really tickled my fancy, unfortunately. I'm hoping that will change before the concert in March.
