"Who is this kid?" "Hi Ren, I've been taking some time to be distant; I've been taking some time to be still. I've been taking some time to be by myself, and I've spent half my life ill." Ren's a 33yr old from a tiny village on the Welsh island of Anglsey, who pushed himself to learn to rap and sing as a young teen because he'd started producing beats at age 12 and due to living in a remote rural area, couldn't find any vocalists or rappers to play with. I've seen it mentioned that he went to a college for the performing arts in Bath. Sony signed him at some point in his young adulthood - they found him busking (DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND WATCH HIM WITH HIS BRIGHTON BUSKING BAND THE BIG PUSH, though that music is from more recently than when Sony found him), but unfortunately he was already very ill with misdiagnosed Lyme disease, and after producing some tracks with him they parted ways (he was even bedbound or housebound for a while and no one knew when or even whether he'd get well again). Ren's battle with Lyme set him up for very few people to know about him (compared tohow many people know about him now) for the next however many years. One of the things he was misdiagnosed with was chronic fatigue syndrome - his strength & energy was (still is, although he's got some function back in conparison to how bad it was at some points) extremely unpredictable/unreliable so I imagine committing to shows is something he finds unwise (which is why busking worked so well for him, and for The Big Push). He's entirely self-taught/KZbin taught on guitar. And oh yeah, piano, too. When you get to his most recent release, Suicide (and its companion live re-worked version, For Joe, you'll see him on piano). He also plays bass (watch The Big Push's video titled Wade In the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble So Hard to see him do beautiful things with the bass), drums, cello, and I've seen others say trombone? He's watched vocal coach Chris Liepe's KZbin channel for tips on singing, and cites Chris' videos on Jeff Buckley's singing techniques as a major influence. Anyway, hopefully that fills in a few blanks for you without giving too much away for your reactions! Loved your video; I'm going to hit Reply on this to post my comment, so I can head back up to subscribe to your channel. Edit: I 100% agree that this is a new form of music. Watch the trilogy (Jenny, Screech, and Violet - do it IN THAT ORDER, and please, for the love of whatever is holy to you, DO THEM TOGETHER, not in separate instances of sitting down to listen; it's too easy to miss the details you need to catch in the lyrics, if time passes between listening to each part, and the story won't make sense/have its intended impact)... anyways, watch the trilogy, and between that and Hi Ren you'll get an idea of what Ren is working towards - he wants to bring this kind of episodic music/short story theatre/performance to Netflix. His KZbin videos are "proof of concept" and the view count/share count is his proof that there's an audience. Edit 2: just keep pushing against that voice. You don't have to win, you just gotta keep dancing. Edit 3: nvm about my Trilogy comment, I see you really *have* been captured by Ren's spell and have reacted to them however you've reacted to them! I'll head over and watch that next.

Enjoyed your reaction.. I hope you decide to go down the rabbit hole - it’s a really fun ride (likely more so for a musician). Ren seems to be a really nice young man, in addition to an immense talent. He doesn’t seem to have a genre; he’s just incredibly talented - every which-way!! I’m an oldie who came of age in the 60s and 70s - listening to some of the best music there is. But, gotta say, Ren has introduced me to rap and hip-hop in a way I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. His busking with The Big Push is amazing, his duos with Sam and Chinchilla.. so, so much for you to explore! And, such opportunity for you to expand your music as well.. will enjoy being along for the ride. (BTW - Ren is 33.. not so much a ‘kid’… but then all you are ‘kids’ to this 73 yo Grandma who loves music)!!

Hi from a new subscriber in Tasmania, Australia 👋🦘🦘🐨✌🏼 When you said you ‘felt like you’d been cheated’ with the music you’ve been exposed to during your life I presume I subscribed right then. I’m 58 and have raised 4 daughters and one son. I was raised on 70s, 80s and adored the 90s as a newly divorced and free-feeling mother of three at the time. The 2000’s hit and music went to the shitter slowly but surely. I’ve said in some other comment’s sections that I feel like a whole generation got musically starved to death and I feel bad for them. What today’s young people often settle for as the ‘norm’ is total shite. No disrespect meant. I’m sure there are many fine young people who find interesting Indie artists. I found Ren a couple of months ago and it was like drinking a huge glass of water in the desert. Keep reacting and being authentic, mate. Tell your self doubt to take a fecking hike and find the joy in your music. Everything else will follow. Much respect. Suzi ❤

Here is some additional information on Ren's story that I gathered from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Erin Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990; he eventually moved to Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, Ren began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue; subsequently, his contract with Sony was dissolved. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis and develop PTSD. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Calgary, Canada, for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023) undergoing IV and other interventions five days a week. Ren recently underwent wisdom tooth removal and cavitation surgery. In addition, his Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder (MCAD), which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, and adrenals as well as his bones/joints. Now, Ren is receiving additional treatments for this previously undiagnosed condition. Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel; if you are a content creator, ask your audience to subscribe to Ren. Ren's YT channel has less than 1 million subscribers, while his videos have garnered millions and millions of views. Listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to the world, and his work is important in these troubling times. Someone has finally created a Wikipedia page for Ren, so there is additional information available.

Do Sick Boi next. ALWAYS choose his live versions over studio. EXCEPTION: Animal Flow; do studio/official then live in one video. Tale of Jenny & Screetch (Full)-do not do them separately. There are more. You may think it's crazy that I just gave you such a big list of songs. You have quite literally stumbled into the Ren rabbit hole. He is not like other artists. Consider some of the following: uni professor in Cardiff starts a KZbin channel with this song to provide additional course material to the future health care professionals he's teaching; many such professionals are doing extensive (1 hr +) videos about his music. A lot of what you'll see, such as this one are live one-takes. I could say lots more but don't want to overwhelm you. But I PROMISE you this: based on your reaction, if you commit to the journey, you won't regret it. Welcome to the RENnaissance!

I don't think you can go wrong with Ren, live or not... but, adding to your suggestion about Animal Flow, I would also suggest doing the music video and live version of Money Game pt.2 In one take. Ren is 33 and has an old soul. He is on another level than other musicians. He plays several instruments at a masters level and can sing in any genre he wants and kills it. He can keep up with the top rappers. He is basically a prodigy and no one is in his lane. Please don't beat yourself up, he is just built different than the normal musician. His music will always be controversial because he is against greed and all forms of government. So he will never get played on the radio and the music industry will try to crush him the bigger he gets on youtube. As an independent musician he says what he wants and the powers that be don't like it.

Ren has that effect on people - making them reflect on their life. Also not the first time a reactor said, "Why didn't I think of this?" I'm sure you're talented but not everyone is genius. I grew up in the 60’s. The Doors, Bob Dylan, many others whose music was beautiful, and meant something. But then music lost content, and then became just noise (to me), and I haven’t really listened to contemporary music since the 80’s. Ren might change that. And I’m going to say, like others, don’t measure your music against anyone else. Put your joy and your passion into it, let it speak through you, and you will be doing something valuable. Best of luck.

Amazing reaction to a heart breakingly honest interplay with the internal struggle. I think we all have it in varying forms. Where our hearts are is where the seeds of doubt seem to be planted as human nature goes. For me it seems to be easier to pick up on the negative and it's a battle to pick up the positive. I used to always feel like a failure when I judged myself against society and its standards. Today I feel that if I'm happy, then I'm successful. New sub. Ren learned to play this well because he was stuck in bed for 23 hours a day for years so he would watch just his favorite guitarists and play them back at slower speeds until he mastered their chords. He plays five instruments and this and The Tale of Jenny and Screech really showcase what he calls Bardcore. I love this dude. I found his music as I was losing my entire family except my children and was slipping into anorexia again and his music changed my life. I was diagnosed with CPTSD at the edge of 60 and didn't know where to place that until I found Ren and Chinchilla along with NF and Citizen Soldier but none so profoundly therapeutic as Ren. Happy by NF comes close as well as Let You Down, but damn, you get him to and that's awesome. Every song in his catalog is different from the last - and not one bad song to be found! I know right? That sheer craziness 🤪 Ren is that Generational Artist. Knox Hill said it perfectly "Ren is Everything". Indeed he is Knox ❤❤❤

This is art of transcendent beauty and an *important* song. Artists often struggle with imposter syndrome. There’s a movie starring Olivia Munn called “Violet” that rings of this and was a transformative experience for me… just as this song also resonates. As a person who’s never been able to escape imposter syndrome and negative self-talk, *realizing* that I can exert the strength that destructive voice questions-strength that I *know* I have-was sooo important. It takes time to push past the negativity-to make your own voice stronger, but if anyone out there is struggling with this, please please please *know* that you can do it. *Know* that I believe in you… but you don’t need me to-just like you don’t need the shroud of doubt that feels first of protection and then as a prison. You are *stronger* than that voice. You are stronger than you can *possibly* know… until you push back with softness or aggression-your choice.

Well done Man. It’s an enthralling roller coaster ride that sucks you in immediately and doesn’t let you go for over 9 freaking minutes. You experienced it honestly, it can be overwhelming and it doesn’t lose it’s impact the more times you watch it. Good luck with your channel Mate!

Loved it man. I can assure you it affected most of us the same way. I just sat there dumbfounded for about 5 minutes after, as if I'd just witnessed something historic. I can only liken it to the first time I heard Bohemian Rhapsody. I've subscribed for your journey!

Hi. I subbed to see what your take is on Rens music going forward. Great reaction video! There’s too many songs that I like, so I’ll let everyone else chime in on what to view next. You can’t go wrong with whatever it is you choose. Cheers!

I was recommended to Ren a month ago with Hi Ren. I immediately told everyone who would listen to me to check it out. There's plenty to keep you going. The one regret I have is that I didn't watch The Tale of Jenny and Screech (full version) much sooner than I did. Also just heard Dear God from Ren a few days ago and I love that too. Welcome to the RENaissance.

I've watched more reactions to this video than I can count. Everyone has a positive reaction, but, like you did, I have more appreciation those who "feel" it. Only one reactor has commented on the fact that he doesn't really end the song before the epilogue. I find that so important because it symbolizes the story not being finished.

This is shot live as a 1 take, with multiple camera angles.... days of preparation and I believe this took 4 tries before they kept this as the best take... truly dedicated to his art...

I wrote this introduction to Ren when I first discovered him earlier this year, as there wasn't a Wikipedia entry for people to look him up prior to March 2023. I have posted this info to every "Hi Ren" reaction I have come across since, and I hope it will be of some use to the uninitiated. "Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered over 15 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Many of Ren's songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren's music videos are frequently recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. In the case of "Hi Ren," it took four takes, all live in the room, to get the footage he wanted. Someone commented that Samuel Perry-Falvey who filmed "Hi Ren," talks about the production of the video in the comments of Jonathan Hiller's (Filmmaker Reacts) reaction to the song. According to him, this video footage is not a one-take per se, but the audio was recorded live in a single take. Ren's release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren" and appears to have been filmed in the same room. Ren is an independent artist/singer/songwriter/busker/producer from Brighton, UK. He plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, produces all his own beats, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern-day bard; he calls his music "bardcore." Ren's earliest recordings on KZbin are from his time in a band called "Trick The Fox," consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren's onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is "The Mash Up." Ren's trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master's class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren's collaborations with Chinchilla ("Chalk Outlines," "How to Be Me," "Sexual Healing," "One Dance/Drunk in Love") are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," "Diazepam," "Penitence," "Dear God," "Heretic," "Dominos," his "Freckled Angels" album, in particular his song "Fire," just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren is about to shoot "Money Game Part III." Ren's Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out "The Hunger," "Genesis," "What You Want," "Losing It (FISHER rap retake)," "Right Here, Right Now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake)," "Life is Funny," "Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3)," "Crucify Your Culture," "Power," "Hold On," "Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake)," his recent release "The Illest Of Our Time," and his latest song "Animal Flow," both the full production and the live acoustic version. Ren's performances with Sam Tompkins ("Blind Eyed," "Earned It /Mans World / Falling," "Walking on the Moon/No Diggity," "Feeling Good/Trouble So High/Masterblaster (Jammin')," "Latch," "Wild Thoughts/Crazy in love (Live Session)," "Same Old Situation (Live, feat. Ren)," "Improvising Around Stevie Wonder," "Live in the Streets of Brighton, UK," "What Went Wrong" Part I&II) are definitely a must. Also, his collaborations with Eden Nash ("Humble," "Ocean"), Bibi ("Crutch," "Ahiahiaoha"), Molly McKinna ("Penitence"), Orlean ("Jessica"), his former bandmate Romain Axisa ("French Song"), are all great. Last but not least, Ren's busking sessions with Liv Sangster are awesome. I recently discovered that Ren also recorded a cover of "Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover)," which is simply beautiful. "The Big Push" (Ren Gill, Gorran Kendall, Romain Axisa, and Glen Chambers) busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are amazing and well worth checking out. All but the drummer sing lead vocals at times. Ren, Gorran, and Romain all play multiple instruments. Ren plays acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, and drums. Gorran plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, and harmonica. Romain plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, ukulele, and piano. They are each incredibly gifted artists, and their solo work is completely different from each other. Well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," "Watch Out," "War Pigs," "Roadhouse Blues," "My Generation," "Paint It Black," "An Englishman in New York," "Bongo Bong" are excellent. On "These Boots Are Made For Walking'/Satisfaction/Everybody," "Praise You" (Fatboy Slim Cover), and "What Kind Of Woman Is This," all three take a turn singing. The songs "Oh My Woman," "Swan Song," "Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Dignity," and so many others are equally impressive. The band, at least for the time being, performed their last official busking session and gave their last concert in September of last year (2022) due to the fact that Ren was leaving for Canada to undergo specialized medical care and surgeries for his multiple health issues. In anticipation of his stay in Canada, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released "Sick Boi" and "Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake)," which is another masterful work. Ren released his song, "Illest Of Our Time," on his birthday, March 29. His recent release, "Animal Flow," is out now in two versions, a full-production music video and a live, one-take acoustic version. Ren's release, "Su!cIde," recently premiered, and it was hard to watch to the point that I was not able to watch or listen to it again. I was not even able to watch a single reaction to it. It is a sad, haunting, gut-wrenching tribute to Ren's friend Joe who took his own life. Ren’s follow-up to “Su!cIde,” "To Joe," is also sad and emotional, but strangely enough, it has had a healing effect on me and has given me a sense of closure. Even the lyrics that "gutted" me in "Su!cIde" impacted me differently this time around.
