My hometown of Southend here in the UK had a massive "Pub Scene" back in the '70's with the likes of Eddie and the Hotrods, Dr Feelgood to mention just a couple. Wilko Johnson (ex Dr Feelgood) pops into The Railway Arms every once in a while to jam along with live bands. The Wilko Johnson Band is still going strong with the bassist from Ian Dury & the Blockheads (Norman Watt-Roy - incredible bass player). Going into the '80's and about 5 miles down the road we have Basildon, birth place of Depeche Mode and Yazoo. Also another 80's band, the very excellent Talk Talk, with their bassist Paul Webb and drummer Lee Harris also coming from Southend. Just to give you an idea geographically, we're about 40 miles east of London :) Have a good day guys!

having lived in SF from 80-84, there was a strong musical identity with the popular bands based there. on the radio you could not get away from Huey Lewis, Grateful Dead, Romeo Void, Y&T (to name a few), but the band who cemented the Bay Area association would be the Jefferson Starship ("We Built This City" anyone?). Los Angeles gets associated with the Doors for me thanks to LA Woman. Yellow Magic Orchestra name checks Tokyo. Rush name checks Toronto via the airport YYZ. the Clash, London Calling; the Smiths, "Oh Manchester/so much to answer for"; and 2 bands that named themselves after their hometown, Boston and Chicago; Australian bands don't usually talk too much about where they're from, but the exception is Men at Work who are from a land "Down Under"

The band Kansas evokes the state to me pretty decently. Angra evokes Brazil for me with the tribal rhythms on Holy Land and prog metal leanings that the Iron Maiden fanatics down there probably like. I was so close to being an Athens resident around the time R.E.M. formed. My parents lived there for awhile in the 70’s since my dad went to college at the University of Georgia, but moved back up to NJ a few months before I was born in September of 1979 (and it’s the state I’ve lived my whole life).

The most Irish artist of all must be Van Morrison. He also sings about his heritage quite a lot, sometimes about being Irish (Irish Heartbeat, One Irish Rover etc) and more often about Celtic spirituality in general (do a ranking of his albums some time). The Beach Boys made a career singing about an idealised Southern California lifestyle. Warren Zenón was very much LA in a darker way. The Kinks were incredibly English but more than anything they were a London band (Waterloo Sunset, Victoria). What about Bjork and Iceland? I don’t agree with associating The Pretenders with Ohio. It’s where Chrissie Hynde is from but the band has never been based there. They formed in London where she lived at the time and were very much a part of the British new wave scene.
