No in-ears. Shotgun mics with no post production. All in one take. First idol appearance on Tiny Desk Korea to fulfill all the Tiny Desk requirements. NMIXX is truly something else.

Because there is only 1 other idol group that was on Tiny Desk Korea which makes it only 2 in total. Surely more vocal heavy groups will do this!

@@lvrvisuals7800Tiny Desk Korea has been out since August 2023, more than a year now. If it was that easy to perform here, groups would have already. Also, the other two kpop "idols" who performed here were tagged as specia, meaning not the same criteria as what NMIXX had to fulfill. I'm not saying there's no group that can't perform here, but even vocal heavy groups would look long and hard before deciding if they can do it.

@@atleastsomeoneelse As for ‘groups’ yes. But as you can see alot of individual kpop idols didnt have the special. So they did the same thing. Also because individual are easier to access vs groups which have a tighter schedule. Only like 3 have the 'special' out of like 25 idols.

I've been a live sound engineer for almost 30 years, and I became extremely impressed when they said they were not using in-ear monitors, for the same reasons you did. I've actually shown this video to several other live performers and engineers in the last week, to discuss certain points. They all agree that this is a very impressive performance. I'll watch your full review on Patreon. But my main comment is about pitch reference, just like you discussed. When Idol groups perform live on shows (It's Live, Killing Voice, Sound Bomb, music shows, etc) they make production decisions to preserve the ability to do post-production on the vocals afterward. They position the band far away from the vocalists, and put them off axis from the vocal microphones, so the recordings of the mics are just that vocalist with minimal bleed from other instruments or vocals. Then you can tune vocals, edit out sounds (lips smacking, mic handling noise, throat clearing, etc), use compression, and add effects like reverb. That's what the companies demand. This performance is designed to do the exact opposite. There's no in-ears, so their only pitch and tempo reference is the band only feet away (and they are playing jazz-style harmonizations different from the vocal melody most of the time). There's a ton of bleed in the vocal mics, so tuning and editing would have been impossible. It's very difficult to sing in an situation like that.

No current kpp girl group can sit at the same table as NMIXX, yet I like Dreamcatcher or Babymonster, Aespa, but they play in the second division compared to NMIXX, vocal: extraordinary, Dance: Amazing ❤❤❤

Whats even crazier than this live raw performance without post production whatsoever? Is this: Tiny Desk usually use dynamic microphones, which is the usual "stage" mics like this -> 🎤 . However for NMIXX's performance, they used small diaphragm condenser microphones. These are usually used in more of a studio setting. These type of mics are used to capture the purest and most natural form of sound, without any added color. These mics are meant to pick up a wider range of sound even more so than regular condenser mics. This is why if you listen closely, you can even hear them opening and closing their mouths, as in the sound when their lips open and close. That's how sensitive these mics are. So the choice of using these types of mics could go either risky, or brave. But in this case, its sonic perfection 👍.
