Guys, I agree with you regarding awards. But in Korea it has a big impact. This can determine more or less success for a group. A group that wins on music shows receives more attention in the media, more CFs, sells more albums, and receives more invitations to TV shows.
@majinzane8 ай бұрын
This is it! In Korea, the industry is significantly different than what we have here in the US and while the award itself isn't that big of a deal, aside from validation, there are lots of doors that are opened when a group gets their first win. This is especially true if they're from a smaller company, like Dreamcatcher, and don't have access to the resources that others in the industry may have access to.
@RoseAllDayyy8 ай бұрын
Exactly this - the context of the award comments is for the Korean music industry which operates slightly differently from the West.
@roseblue_8 ай бұрын
In fact, the Korean music industry is super competitive. The award shows are a major part of it and any thoughts of actual survival depends on these. This is a major difference to the Western music industry. In fact, Dreamcatcher managed to win their first two wins two years after Odd Eye, and made it to renew their contracts beyond the usual 5-year period (aka "the five year curse"). There are very few groups to survive for 7 years like Dreamcatcher did. Contrary to mainstream K-Pop groups, Dreamcatcher are a slow burn group. They don't get their views with massive ad campaigns on YT, but in a steady gradual way. This is because they have a big international fan base, which allows them to have a different mentality to the K-fandoms and the fashionable marketing things the Big-3 dominated industry creates to promote their big groups.
@Brainreaver798 ай бұрын
i agree, but isnt it the 7year curse (the normal lenght of the contracts)
@roseblue_8 ай бұрын
@@Brainreaver79 Nearly all K-pop groups from small companies (and some from large ones) never reach the 5-year mark. They're disbanded in a few years. So most never dream of reaching 7 years. Dreamcatcher renewed their contracts on the 5 year mark and keep going. The 7-year curse is mostly about big company groups, with huge fanbases and a lot of comebacks. Before reaching a state growing success, DC were in a state of constant fear of disbandment. Then Deja Vu came and Scream, and Dystopia, after that. And they bloomed, selling better with each comeback.
@Brainreaver798 ай бұрын
@@roseblue_ didnt they renew beginning of last year? that'd be 6years or do i misremember it so bad
@roseblue_8 ай бұрын
@@Brainreaver79 Yes they renewed early. But it's not about contracts. It's about how long a group survives and still gets support from a company. See their peer ggs. Most didn't make to 5 years.

Thanks for checking out Dreamcatcher again! What I always find interesting about Dreamcatcher is that you never know what kind of rock sound mixed with who knows what genre you're getting next. This means that they are not going to please everyone every time (I mean who does?), but I absolutely love that it's hard to find two singles that sound similar to each other. You might like it more or less but their music never sounds stale. I think they have songs that will be more up your rock alley, like 'Reason', 'Rising', 'Break the Wall', 'Good Night', 'The Curse of the Spider (2024 concert version)', 'Endless Night', 'Don't Light My Fire', 'What', 'Mayday'...
@Brainreaver798 ай бұрын
true, for example i really really dont like OOTD... its their worst song. its not a bad song,.dont get me wrong, but the one i only listen to if the random playlist starts it. but i love every other song my favorite being Red Sun. dont light my fire... man thats a throwback to early within temptation / Evanescence.. at least it sound like those days

The win that the comment was referring was not an annual award like the Grammys - instead, a huge promotional tool is a set of (currently 6) weekly television music shows each of which selects one group to receive a win. During a typically two-week promotional period every aspiring kpop group tries to appear on all six shows twice (which for the artists are each like 18-hour days with lots of hurry-up and wait, pre-show filming and then a live show). A win generally means a significant bump in sales, and so show wins DO matter to kpop musicians almost certainly more than they should. At the time of Odd Eye, Dreamcatcher had been doing such promotions for (I think) 10 prior releases for almost exactly 4 years, and had not received a single show win. They had been in the top 3 a few times, and once were pretty blatantly robbed by some score rigging happening behind the scenes on one show for the song Deja Vu. Getting a show win was something that the women stated they wanted, but by Odd Eye they were getting pretty resigned to industry shenanigans keeping them from any win ever. One year after Odd Eye they finally did receive the first of their wins setting the current record for kpop girl groups for the longest amount of time between debut and first show win. Should you ever decide to react to Maison, I recommend reacting to the post win live version "[쇼챔 1위] 4월 셋째 주 챔피언송 드림캐쳐 앵콜 Full ver." since it is undoubtedly their best performance ever of that song. For the vast majority of their songs including Odd Eye the producers were a duo called Leez and Ollounder. Their process generally had each woman singing the entire song and then selecting the voice that best fit each line (while still insuring a reasonably even distribution). The women have grown as musicians and now often contribute to the lyrics and composition as well, and are credited accordingly. AS of last year Leez has moved on to another company leaving Olounder to establish a larger production team for Dreamcatcher. Oh and really minor note: Your description for this video reads "Today we bring back Ado to the channel." which is an easy copy and paste then edit mistake, but I love both Ado and DC and so it made me laugh.

8:20 They do have producers to decide the parts, in Kpop usually many people work on a single song. Dreamcatcher's members also participate in writing and sometimes composing the songs (and some choreos too). 11:35 Her name is Dami, and usually the producers change the beat for her rap parts to give it a different feeling. I think you guys would enjoy their song Endless Night, it has that metal vibes and it's one of their japanese releases btw

While parts are often written for specific members and probably land with those members such as the main and lead vocals, they say that they each perform all the parts and then finalize which part fits best with which member for how it sound and the balance across members in the song.

Odd Eye is part 3 of the Dystopia trilogy, which is about cyber-bullying, hateful comments and people losing themselves in the (fake) online world. People can get lost in the world of the Internet and social media and their online personas can take over their life. Dreamcatcher want us to use our odd eye to see through the lies (on Facebook and others) and don't be fooled by the "lies masked in sweetness". I can only recommend to keep reacting to them, they are always interesting and entertaining! And the song is a banger!

Dreamcatcher was known as a group called "MINX" and it was composed of 5 members : Jiu, Dami, Yoohyeon, SuA and Siyeon. The concept was bubbly (I like bubbly concept). MINX debuted in 2014 with 'Why Did You Come To My Home?' [MV]. But they rebranded it to "Dreamcatcher" and debuted as a 7 member group : Jiu (Leader), Yoohyeon, Dami, Handong (She wasn’t a MINX member), Gahyeon (Maknae) (She wasn’t a MINX member), Siyeon and SuA. Dreamcatcher has been known for their dark concept (I like dark concept too). Dreamcatcher debuted in 2017 with 'Chase Me' MV.

dreamcatcher \:D/ their most popular songs tend to be more on the poppy side since it draws the kpop audience. the dystopia trilogy(scream, boca, odd eye) is their most viewed/listened to for this reason as it leans more on the electronic side. personally odd eye is one of my least favorite of their songs because as you mentioned it sounds a bit too western commercial. their most recent apocalypse trilogy(maison, vision, bon voyage) is more interesting musically, but still leaning on the pop side but that's who they are, but they do mix it up quite a bit and there are a lot of songs with a more straightforward rock and even metal feel. I know all the switchups seem a bit jarring for western ears as it was for me initially, but adds a not of dynamics once you get use to it.

One thing I'm missing here is to know who's your favorite girl lol You may laugh but actually picking your "bias" is a big part of the korean idol culture (or your "oshi" in japanese idol music). Also a lot of people will tell you some shit, but the sex appeal is part of the whole thing, same as in western pop, so don't feel "bad" for liking the girls phisically, since that's like the main purpose of them spending so fucking much on wardrobe, stylists and etc. And before you feel weird about them, the oldest one in Dreamcatcher is about to be 30 in like a month, while the youngest is like 25 I think? So they are far from being kids lol

Yes. Metal fans often find Dreamcatcher likable. I never thought I’d like K-pop. Dreamcatcher has had a rough beginning, the pop world didn’t receive their rock vibe at first. Lisa, from Blackpink, kinda broke molds and helped the Korean side of pop open up to some mold-breaking performances. I’d like to point out Lisa wears an Iron Maiden jacket.

It's hard requesting songs because they're all done in trilogies or series so while I want you guys to hear all the good songs it makes more sense to start at the beginning! Their Apocalypse trilogy is perfect for the times we're in, it talks about the destruction of the planet. part one is MAISON 🫶

Unfortunately, most K pop is extremely produced, most only lip sync in concert and dancing and looks are more important than anything. K pop is not about people who can write their own music or play music, it is like the old boy bands in the U.S. If most k pop bands had to do a live concert without lipsync, it would be horrible.
@HuginMunin8 ай бұрын
That's changing somewhat. Younger Idols want more creative control, so there's much more self produced/self written material nowadays. More solo projects earlier in careers. You can find the artists with more creative control, like Soyeon, Mamamoo, Bibi, Stray Kids, Kiss of Life, Yunjin, etc.
