Somewhat of an obscure choice, but the riff that starts at 8:05 in Opeth's Deliverance is one of the heaviest moments because of the transition from the very quiet piano & vocal section into this absolutely massive doomy riff. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about the heavy heavy stuff, but you gotta admit, the opening riff for Judas priest's Painkiller is absolutely sick dude.

I completely agree with Sad But True! It has always been the heaviest riff to me. I absolutely love Meshuggah and although Bleed is probably the heaviest song I have ever listened to, I just don't categorize the opening of Bleed as a riff, at least not in the same way like Sad But True is a "riff", if that makes any sense. Fun video and delightful topic! Oh, and happy birthday!

I know its a bit more of a "deep cut" i suppose but check out the last minute or so of their song "By the Ton" from their album The Violent Sleep of Reason. Pretty badass riff! In fact, check out the rest of their whole discography if you haven't yet. Honorable mention: Their EP "I" at around 10:30

Walk is definitely up there. Orgasmotron by Sepultura is incredibly heavy. War Pigs needs a mention. Piece by Piece by Slayer deserves a mention for the intro. I would also put Immigrant Song in as the guitar is very heavy. As a start for a song, Bulls On Parade is a great heavy start. Honourable mentions to Ace Of Spades, My Name Is Mud and (maybe controversial) Polly.

I'm gonna throw in "4th of July" by Soundgarden. One of the heaviest, sludgiest songs ever - even though Alice In Chains were more consistently heavy from the Seattle scene.

Frickin love that song! Good call. SO sludgy. When that intro comes in it feels like you’re trying to walk through wet concrete!

From Skin to Liquid is another banger from them, in terms of brutally heavy riffage. Could never get into the vocal delivery/lyrics from them although it seems like Corpsegrinder is a great dude. Some underrated instrumentals from them as well. Alex Webster is a fucking monster

I feel like I will get attacked, but my favorite heavy riff would be Mick Gordon's The Only Thing They Fear Is You. That just feels like a riff even demons find heavy af.

"You don't have to tune low to be heavy ..." - Max Cavalera, 1999 Good to see the majority of the favored riffs are still (mostly) in either Standard or drop D tuning. :)

This Love from Pantera. The intro riff is just brooding and heavy. The chorus riff is crushing but the riff outro to the second verse is the heaviest riff of all time.

I still think the riff at about 1:08 of strength beyond strength opening track of far beyond driven by pantera is one of the heaviest riffs I’ve ever heard I think it beats sad but true imo ofc
@xxxCarnesxxx Жыл бұрын
That track does some heaviness to it but I think Becoming is heavier than that. The squeal in it seems to lighten up the riff. If you just focus on the bass guitar parts for it you can tell how heavy the riff actually is.
@ghilishcambino8336 Жыл бұрын
@@xxxCarnesxxx becoming is definitely a heavier song overall but that riff in particular from strength beyond strength is one of their most heaviest riffs imo

Also the thing that should not be by Metallica is arguably as heavy
@itsalwayssomething7490 Жыл бұрын
Yes. It's the first riff I thought of, because I remember Jason talking about this being the heaviest riff. It's the dynamic in the song. Sad But True starts at a level of heaviness and stays there for the whole song. So, while it starts really heavy, your brain gets used to it, it becomes less heavy as the melody in the song takes over. The Thing that should not be starts off very subtle and by the time it gets heavy, its so heavy. And because it dynamically gets quieter throughout the song, when the heavy riff comes back, it's just as heavy as the first time. That, and the riff is more off kilter than Sad But True. It has a dissonance and sounds dark, and filled with despair. Yes, Sad But True is more of a crowd fist pumping song, The Thing That Should Not Be is just heavier.

I agree with Sad but True, but my 1st instinct is to say "Iron man" solely because I heard it at such a young age, 5 or 6 years old and it was so much heavier than the nursery rhymes I knew at the time, so it's heaviness is embedded deep. My favorite band is Twisted Sister and they have a couple of heavy chugging riffs in "The Beast" & "Horror Terria...". They may not be the heaviest, but they deserve a mention. My favorite riff, I wouldn't say is the heaviest, but the main riff in Cradle of Filth's "Cruelty and the Beast". First hits at 1:36. I LOVE that riff!"

I would like to put the intro riff to sixpounder by cob, pathetic by log (live at download), black 7 by soil, drag the waters by pantera, and possibly die bom bang burn fuck by dope all up for consideration. However I do agree that sad but true is monstrously heavy and won't refute the claim of it being the heaviest riff of all time due to the large amount of people who agree with you. Thank you to whomever took the time to read this, and I hope you have a great day. Also happy birthday bro. Peace ✌

The guy sitting next to the guy in the mask, who you said something about chest hair is Simon Crahan, Clown from Slipknot's son, the drummer of Vended. Awesome seeing him there. Then Alicia Taylor, Corey Taylor from Slipknot's wife.

I have always said sad but true is the best description of heavy. It has very specific pull to it that a lot of heavier songs don’t have. Like I don’t listen to Metallica much at all anymore, mostly instrumental stuff. Polyphia, strawberry girls, I built the sky, etc. but sad but true is still a go to jam.

First thing that comes to mind is "sad but true" but close second S.O.D. - "March of the S.O.D" -more Metallica -the breakdown in "Disposable Heroes". The breakdown in Megadeth's "The Conjuring" - and of course we cannot forget Anthrax - "Indians" -the war-dance breakdown and "I am the law"
