AWESOME .... I'm sitting here smiling ear to ear, as I make my videos saying this is the TRC XX or whatever handheld I'm testing.... and say low power and high power and say what antenna I'm using... just like the GREAT Mack's Public Land Hunting & Outdoors channel.... I thought I was the only one to copy him... I think he's started a whole new hobby!!

Yes definitely, Mack's Public Land Hunting has set the standard. I will never have his stage presence though, he's just really natural on his videos. He's the kind of guy that you wished he lived next door (or within radio distance at least). I'm looking forward to your vids when you finish. I'm subscribed, so I should see them when you post. - Steve P.S. I'm thinking about doing the Midland 77-861 or a Lafayette next. . . we'll see.

Thanks for the review of the Midlands . My oldest midland is a 75-779 /SMT hand held. It was my first with scanning for a walkie talkie

I just checked out the 75-779 in Google and that is a cool radio with the scan and dual watch. Thanks for sharing, most folks seem to like the Realistics the best, and I really like them too, but Midlands are my favorites.

Nice video, and well done! These walkie-talkies of the past often get little respect, but in the past, if anyone respected the dollar, these portable radios got their respect at the cash register. It took quite a while for me to save up the $100 needed to buy a Realistic TRC-100 5w 6ch. walkie-talkie, and at that time it only came with crystals for 1 channel (ch.11). But it's been quite a ride for 11m walkie-talkie users, and it was a well spent $100 for 5 watts, vs. a decade earlier, when $100 would only get you 100mw of output. While walkie-talkie bodies have (like their components) shrunk in size, one truth remains constant: for optimal results you'll need a long, telescoping portable, or typical mobile car antenna to get decent range. One thing I'd like to underline has to do with the use of batteries. I may have missed you mention this part (if so, please accept my apologizes), but as you said, it takes 12 rechargeable or 10 regular batteries to use the walkie-talkie. As explained on page 4 of the manual. Regular and Alkaline batteries are 1.5v, so you would want to follow the manual and use only 8 of these (8 x 1.5v = 12vdc). Back then, rechargeable batteries were the nickel-cadmium (ni-cad) type, and only had an output of about 1.2 or 1.25 volts. This is why it required 10 of these rechargeable batteries to obtain the full output of the walkie-talkie (10 x 1.2 = 12v). Today, rechargeable batteries are typically made from lithium ion (li-on) and have an output of 1.5-1.7 volts, so if you used 10 of these batteries, or 10 Alkaline, your operating voltage would be well out of range (10 x 1.5v = 15v), something we often did back in the "olden days" when these handhelds were new, to try and squeeze a little extra output power from the walkie-talkie (at the risk of harming the internal parts) - which usually worked fine. Today though, all of its components, especially the EC's (electrolytic capacitor) may be very fragile, and a burst of 15v (or higher) DC could potentially damage the internals of the unit, so caution is advised. This was an enjoyable video I really look forward to watching videos of the other models you have listed - Thank you, once again!

That was an AWESOME comment, thanks! I used 10 new rechargeable batteries when I ran the tests. Maybe you know the answer to this one, I think I heard that AA batteries were slightly smaller in the 70s then now, and I also noticed that it's challenging fitting the batteries in my Lafayettes, for example. Have you heard anything about that? And yes, I definitely respect these radios. I purposely do not refer to them as old, ancient, antique, vintage, or "back in the day" radios, as if they are not relevant or useable today. If you take care of stuff, it will last. So far my best performing walkie talkie is the Realistic TRC-226 - even a little better than the Randy II. I bought the TRC-226 new in the 1990s. Thanks again.

@@musicman364 Part of the issue is slightly smaller diameter batteries (the old ever ready red batteries fit great). I think Duracell is the widest battery, followed by those energizer batteries. The pharmacies around here also sell Ray-0-vac batteries and they seemed to fit like the old batteries, until they re-vamped the look. The most frustrating issue is with walkie-talkies like those from Midland that had an open black box that fit 4 batteries on each side. The plastic became brittle over the years, and it's real easy to have one break apart in your hands while trying to load fresh batteries (that'd be a great project for a 3D printer).

Thanks Mack! @steve_niceguy and I are huge fans of your channel. I would not be making ANY of these had I not watched your videos - I'm just a copy cat. No pressure definitely, but some day I would love to see how your PRO538HHFM does out in the field with a stock antenna or maybe your HYSHIKRA. I'm going to do some more tests on my Randy II and I'm curious to see how they compare. Have a great weekend!

I bought most of my radios off eBay, about 10-20 years ago. I would search "vintage CB walkie talkie" and see what was available. When I saw one that looked nice that I liked, I would examine the photos closely. Chances are that if the exterior looked very good, the radio was probably well cared for. Sometimes I would question the seller to see if the radio worked, if the antenna was intact, or if there were any signs of battery leakage. Sometimes I would buy new battery holders or do very minor repairs (I am not a technician). I really like the old big rugged radios made out of metal, but also appreciated the new radios like the President Randy II FCC. Good luck to you, I hope you can find a nice radio.

All right thank you and I saw your video yes you've got quite a bit of details going on it however you definitely can get more range a TLC 217 can you give me between 10 to 20 mi range more if I'm up on a mountain British Columbia on top of SFU I made a contact with the TRC 217 do the gulf Islands that's about 30 Mi away then I made a contact to the BC Ferries close to Nanaimo so basically SFU Burnaby to close to Nanaimo you can get more range yes you may want to try let's say between I would say hi cut the range between three going all the way out to 10 miles you've managed to keep the equipment going I also do CB and testing with this equipment I also have a TRC 217 TRC 221 and also a 23 Channel sideband unit mobile 1972 Sidewinder II you may want to try an external antenna you did try the external antenna and I saw a big difference❤

Thanks for the comment. I would love to see some videos on your radio tests sometime. Yes, these radios can definitively get better range under the right conditions. Currently, I am just doing initial tests on their performance under urban conditions with obstacles. I am going to test all of the radios seen at the beginning of the video, post new videos, then my plan is to take the best performers and find out which ones do the best at greater distances. I agree, an external antenna makes a huge difference. As you can see, when I tested the radio with the Wilson 1000, the reception was crystal clear. Thanks again, Musicman364. Next video will be the Lafayette Dyna-Com 23 and 40.
