I love how, unlike some modern collaborations, this truly feels like both of them are putting their creativity into it, blending really well, and not just doing the strictly necessary. You can hear Jacob’s influence in here, but still come with the entire personality she puts in her music.

2:54 when she sings "soot on my tongue" the melody is the same as when Michael Jackson sings "i am the one" in "Billie Jean". Just an interesting connection. also, the guitar intro reminds me of a mix between the guitar in "Living Room" by Andy Shauf and "Rises the Moon" by Liana Flores. I don't know if Lizzy or Jacob have heard of those artists, but I definitely hear that 60s indie inspiration among them all

Hoping for a follow-up reaction to Lizzy singing live acoustic. She's brilliant, but I think she shines through even more in a natural setting :)

Her NPR Tiny Desk concert came out a month ago and is amazing. Her backing band is the group Tiny Habits who are themselves a fantastic 3 piece vocal group who seem to share some of Lizzy's jazz influenced harmonic sensibility.

The way you described how he “Jacobized” the song without ruining it or making it not sound like Lizzy kinda describes Djesse vol. 3. If you haven’t checked it out yet you should. On the album he Jacobizes pop/electronic/R&B music in a way that scales back a bit of his insane frenetic infinite ideas style and makes fun and interesting pop music with a little Jacob twist. He really uses the recording studio as an instrument in that one

Thanks for introducing me to Lizzy McAlpine! I heard her name before but was unfamiliar with her work. I REALLY love her approach to song writing both lyrically and musically. Thanks for reacting to her. I love your videos and learn so much as a ever-learning musician. Keep it up!

great react vid! Just an fyi, I listened to an interview with Lizzy McAlpine where she talked about not graduating from Berklee as she was not enjoying going to classes and learning music theory - which is kind of ironic because she seems to have a great ear and works with someone like Jacob Collier who has learned so much on his own about theory. I agree about the Billie Eilish influence - and I would add Phoebe Bridgers - which I considers to be a good thing, as the emphasis seems to be on featuring the voice as natural sounding rather than super processed.

By the end, the song is incredibly reminiscent of “breathin” by Ariana Grande, which is itself a wonderful (if a bit less “intelligent,” comparatively) song as well. Really enjoy this collaboration and both artists a lot - Jacob’s a joy on practically everything he works on. Loved this analysis of it too!
