Full disclosure, I haven't quite finished your reaction yet, so you may have caught this later on. But in case you didn't, this entire video is basically Polyphia paying their respect to Vai. The music video starts in the basement of this building they're at, and the first one to sit on that black throne is Tim in the basement. The song is also at its least complex during this part. It builds until it gets to Scottie's part, where they move up to the next floor and he's got his turn on the black throne. Song also gets a little more complex there. Finally they move to the roof where Vai is sitting on the throne, and the song goes all out. Sort of their way of paying respect to Vai through the video, as well as the song, and really gives some meaning to the track title as well. Tim also talked about this track in his recent interview with Herman Li, about how he deliberately wanted this track (and the previous track featuring Chino Moreno) to close out the album. Sort of another way of Tim/Polyphia thanking Vai and giving him their respect. Great interview, definitely worth checking out if you haven't yet. All in all, thought it was really cool to see Polyphia do that for Vai (not that he needs anything from them, he's a guitar god, but it's always nice to honor the people who paved the way for you).

Yeah the whole thing they did with the throne was sick. The little guitar nods are great too. Tim starts on a 7 string, which was pioneered by Steve. And his inlay pattern is "The Tree of Death" which is obviously based on Steve's Tree of Life.

I feel like Clay and Clay never get talked about enough. They, in my opinion, might be the tightest rhythm section ever. Masterfully crafted basslines that just fit so well in the pocket with what the drummer does.

My Polyphia hot take is that drummer Clay is the most talented person in the band. They're all insanely talented, but his ability to be so precise in such complex parts when I saw them live really struck me as special. His touch is unmatched IMO.

From the casual fan they probably don't get enough credit but anyone who's a musician that hears their music quickly realizes how masterful their rhythm section is. It's impossible to execute the incredible complexity that they have in their music and for it to all stay together without having a rhythm section as good as they are they're the glue that holds this whole thing together.

The trumpet player is Ivan Jackson from the R&B duo Brasstracks, and he’s prominently featured in the opening track on the new album Genesis, as well as throughout the album. Definitely agree with most of the comments here, The Audacity is gonna be right in your wheelhouse!

The Solo Scott laid down on this track is mind-bending to me. It's usually Tim doing the big fancy displays in their songs, his section in this song is one of my favorites in any of their songs! They are just as calm live too. Every once in a while you will see Tim or Scott's faces scrunch up in a truly finger breaking solo or something, but its rare. They played the whole stage and brought the crowd in a ton when I saw them last year! I have tickets for the new tour they announced and I can't wait till I get to see them again!

I think the horns were added at the end because its the final track and the first track features brasstracks which is very trumpety and it just ties the whole album together really nicely

I love Polyphia because I hear so much Jazz influence in their music that its super appealing to me. I'm constantly caught thinking how cool and interesting an idea they've used in their music. Additionally, their Musicianship is unparalleled technically and seeing them play with someone they clearly respect like Steve makes them even more likeable. This was a really cool track. This is the product of being modern metal musicians. They started off heavier but still intricate and have morphed their sound adding more hip-hop and pop influence. You will never find more experimental music than the metal genre. Only genre with like 30 sub-genres. And they play 6, 7 and 8 string guitars depending on the song.

Tim Henson actually talks about this in a podcast interview with Herman Li about how the comment was taken out of context and sensationalized for content/clout. It was never meant in a negative connotation but as a way to define an era's sound.

I love that this is the fifth or sixth reacts I've watched that will say, where's steve vai, mere SECONDS before he arrives! That's PERFECT song construction. I know I'm late to the party here, but having watched and rewatched this video for the umpteenth time, I felt compelled to comment. I feel as if the imagery of the throne is each member in their egoism. The feeling of being "untouchable" and of having no equal. With one giving way to the other, until they realize they owe so much to those who came before them. They feel gratitude. Hence the "death" of their ego. Even the band and Steve nod to the trumpeter, whose instrument predates even their. Just respecting those that came before and remaining humble, even when you know you're one of the best is the main message. That, and rock the eff on!

There have been a few reactors that haven’t been wowed by his solo but I truly don’t think they understand Steve vai and his HISTORY. when you have Steve vai in your song.. you take what he gives you. First to be a band where everyone is in their mid to late 20’s let alone to have the GOAT in your song is another.

Really enjoyed your reaction and analysis. Nice to see the old and the new in one song. Polyphia's new album had many guests that sang including a song called Chimera which is a fusion of flamenco, rock, and hip-hop. When people, especially over 50 years old, list great guitarists, its a list of the usual suspects. Mostly guys from the 70s and 80s SRV, Jimi, BB, even John Mayer, essentially guys just living in the blues scales. . But guitarists like Tim and Scott, jason Richardson, miguel Fernandez, ichiko nito, I could go on, are doing things that the classics guys hadnt even dreamed of. Its awesome seeing this Renaissance in guitar. They definitely deserve to be in the pantheon of guitar gods.

Did you notice that the "walkdown" chord progression that had been constant through the song *changes* when they move to the roof? Instead of the minor 1 -> 7 -> 6 -> 5 cycle, they switch to minor 1 -> 6 -> 4 -> 6 -> 7 ?

in Buddhism, Ego Death is associated with the concept of An-Atman, "No-Self," the realization that the being that calls itself your "self" is not one continuous thing, but a complicated system of impressions and desires, not separate and apart from other things, but intrinsically contingent on its relationships to everything. somehow, Polyphia were able to convey that idea in an instrumental song.

I highly recommend checking out “the Omnific” they are the polyphia of bass. 2 band bass and 1 drummer. They also feature clay ( the bassist) from polyphia. No doubt they will blow your mind!

It's so fun to watch reactions to Polyphia's new stuff. For having a lukewarm reaction to GOAT, you seem to be having a blast with this one. I wasn't too impressed with Steve's part at first, but the more I listen to it, the more I appreciate the restraint he shows and the feeling he injects into the solo. You should check out their song Chimera next. 3 diff guitars and they each have a COMPLETELY different tone, it's insane.

I’ve watched several reaction videos to this song. Most don’t realize that the song is essentially just a standard chord progression. Those that do can’t exactly figure out what it is… you nailed it and played it perfectly after like listening for 30 seconds… I’m impressed sir
