Just a tip if you're not aware, bagpipes require a LOT OF elbow pressure to work. The bag just being inflated isn't enough, and you've got to compensate for the air being blown out by continuously increasing the pressure until you fill it up again

I only recently found your videos through the algorithm, and your creations have absolutely set my brain alight. I wish I found you 10 years ago! Everything you do is so fascinating and inspiring. I also have a long-time love of playing with PVC, but I never could have dreamt it was possible to make such things. Your wide knowledge of existing instruments and musical styles also makes my heart so happy, as a person who loves indigenous music. You have given me no excuse; I have a lot of things to make and play now.

Bagpipes are my main build; that and whistles. I think you might find that they become addictive, I certainly did. I've used inflatables for other non-music builds, and they have a nasty habit of breaking. It's a shame because they're funny. I've had less but similar problems using vinyl pleather. Leather costs more, but I love working with it. If there's a leak, you find it, you cement it, and it's never a problem again. This membrane clarinet style is fantastic to get the sort of northumbrian-smallpipe sound, but it can't replicate the sounds from a proper double-reed. The double-reed actually changes how it vibrates based on the frequency being played. That allows every note to get a slightly different timbre, which is what I especially love about the irish Uilleann bagpipes. I love the idea of using them for the drone-pipes! I think that could save me a lot of time in the future. I love your choice for the clapper-valve. My first build I used the valve from a 3M face-mask. I researched the patent on it and everything. In retrospect, it was a time-sink to fit it in place, but it did indeed work very well.

No way, I just built a similar foghorn/membrane clarinet bagpipe for a university project! I used a balloon instead of the ducky, at the end of my performance piece I popped the balloon and put a party buzzer in its place haha. Anyways I'm super impressed you could tune this thing so well, the membranes are always so hard for me and I find that even the slightest change in temperature/humidity/playing them for too long detunes them. Do you know any way to get around this? (I used rubber balloons for the membrane but perhaps the vinyl gloves are more consistent)

I'm sure you noticed that some of your tones are not stable when the drones are playing. I suspect this is because you didn't tune your instrument to just intonation (pure ratios of the drone frequency). I don't think you can afford 12-tone equal temperament when there are coupled vibrating parts involved.
@NicolasBras
@NicolasBras 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe! I also think that connected my singing pipe directly to the drones is a bad choice too

Do you have experience playing a bagpipe before this? It came out quite nice! One problem with your choice of bag is that it's likely quite stretchy, which means it's difficult to have tight control of air pressure. That's also why you get that long trailing off when you stop playing. Anyway, I love what you've created. I keep occasionally coming back to my own 3d printed bagpipe project, and seeing your results is inspiring,

I love the look and the sound of the ducky bagpipes! I just wish I could have shown it to this old school Scottish bagpipe instructor who took the hobby waaaaaaayyyyy too seriously. I didn't psue the lessons but his greeting message to me was something like this with a strong Scottish brogue/accent...."ya kenna' pley' the pypes' unless yee really are detikated to them...are ya reeeelyy...reeelly dedicated sonny!: I didn't have the heart to tell him that I wanted to learn the "pypes" so I could start a metal band and have a lead bagpipe player in it. But this one in the video sounds great...a little bit Mideastern like something from a 1950s movie from the Casba
