We really appreciate this series. We just completed our interview in LA last week and plan on moving to France May 1. Question: do you know if it is possible to change visa types while living there? Say from visitor to entrepreneur?

Congratulations, how exciting!!! 🥳 To you question, there's a lot of coflicting advice out there about this, and we have not done it. That said, there is no rule we know of that says you can't. We've heard anecdotally that people have better luck requesting a visa change after their first renewal here in France. I would say how to go about this and have the best chance of success might be worth a one-time consult with an immigration lawyer. Good luck with everything!!

Hello, you will find answers and step by step guidance on the official website "Welcome in France, helping you to settle in". Basically, it is possible. If you can find someone with time for you at the LA Consulate, you will be shown all the relevant webpages, si IMO you don't really need a lawyer. Beware, May 1, 8, 9 (long week-end aka bridge= pont in French) and 20 are public holidays, most shops and offices are closed. Welcome!

@@jean-pascalesparceil9008 Thank you so much for this helpful info. Luckily our furnished apartment has a self-check in on May 1. Our 6 month lease starts a week later for the same property. We hope to find a place to rent long term during those 6 months. Not selling our US home - yet - so won’t be buying in France for a while, and because of the mortgage hurdles in France may always rent.

Thank you for the visa validation information. I was wondering about the address part. As I have just received a long-stay visitor visa, will not be in one place and so will not have a single address. Therefore, I am curious about what you mean by immigration "meetings" that one will need to attend. This is the first time I have heard about required meetings. Can you please tell me what you mean by immigration meetings? What type of meetings and for what purpose? Thank you.

For a long-stay visitor visa, in order to renew after your first year, you will only be required to go to a medical visit within your first several months of arrival. This occurs after you validate your visa after your arrival. Other visa types may also require language courses and civics lessons.

What about if you are retired…is that under “visitors” category? If not which one? Also are us social security benefits taxed? Or exempt? And retirement pensions exempt from tax too?
