I love to see how popular Libby and yourself have gotten! I love the EDC too. I've recently migrated from my chunky camera bag to a smaller sling bag and I thought I'd miss having the space (and especially a place to carry a tripod) but swapping to a lighter set up has been much better for most places I find myself.

Just a suggestion, (since you asked 🙂). You can't go wrong with a little knife - a Swiss army knife is what I carry in my EDC. It's come in handy quite a few times. And, even a basic little first aid kit can prove useful. I have a very small one with just a small roll of bandaids, very small scissors, a couple of alco-wipes, and a small tube of antihistamine insect sting/bite cream. Love your work, btw. 👍

I admire your work and content regarding field recording and it has fascinated me! I would like your valuable help with something, so that you can guide me to make the right choice. I go to Techno Parties and I like to record the music, voices, the overall vibe of the party, and I would like a quality recorder that is also somewhat portable. It’s an environment with a lot of bass and it’s loud also. Would the ZOOM H5 be a good choice for me? Also, in the Zoom, can I adjust the gain on both the built-in microphones separately? Because on the Zoom H1n, you can't adjust the gain separately on each microphone so that I get the same levels on both. Any advice would be very helpful.

What a great video. I find not having a good bag is the largest barrier for me wanting to go out field recording more frequently. I use a canvas messenger bag that is slow to access, gets in the way, and doesn't have defined compartments. This gives me a form to look for. Thanks

I carry a Nitecore Tip flashlight on my keychain and it's easily the most used and best thing I've probably ever bought. It only has like 130 lumens on high but if you shine that in someone's face I can guarantee you they will be blinded/disoriented more than enough for you to gain an advantage in the situation. It's small and comfortable and easy to hold and use. It also has a clip that mounts to your cap and it's so small you don't even notice it. I have so many flashlights but this is the only one I buy again right away if I lose or break one of them. I also discovered earplugs a few years ago and have a pair in a small metal container attached to my keychain. They are very helpful when you need them and they aren't in the way when you don't. I never leave home without these two things so I guess they are considered EDC.

I just subscribed to your channel. Am into city walk and I really need audio recorder that can help capture ambient sounds and give better studio quality to make the viewer feel like as if they are there with me live . For example some movies might not be too interesting but the audio quality, the sound can keep people watching. I really need your recommendation because am almost about to get the zoom h1n before I found your channel.

Nice kit :) I somehow prefer backpacks or my large old sling-messenger bag. I tried these smaller slings ... It doesn't click with me; for me I don't see the benefit over a small backpack. In case I'm in an area where I would be worried someone might steal something; I can wear the backpack in the front. Otherwise, lots of room, out of the way and comfortable.
@FreeToUseSounds Жыл бұрын
Hi Oliver! That's a valid point, as we all have different tastes and preferences. By the way, I also purchased a backpack, the Heimplanet Transline 34L. It's very lightweight, made of waterproof material, and I could always fit the sling bag inside it if needed. Feel free to check it out.

Actually, do you have a recommendation of a good but light raincoat when traveling, that can be folded and stored in small backpack or sling bag. Thanks.

I can’t use the KZ for monitoring as I can’t hear the low frequencies so can’t tell if LF wind noise is ruining a recording. Not sure if it’s the product is faulty or my ear shape doesn’t work with this kind of device. Mids and highs sound clean and detailed but just zero bass

Marcel. Thanks for the suggestion of leaving the studio cans at home and getting the studio earphones for the field. Amazon had a nice pair for around $30 on sale. The sound is great. Keep up the good work. P.S. I have seen reviews on KZbin about the Zoom M3 much more positive without the problems you had with the other two.

Nice. I heard about those KZ ZS10 earphones, I think from the Camera Conspiracies channel. He also said they were really great for the price. I may get some in future. Is that your main setup for 2023 ? No more Schoepps or Sennheiser, MixPre or F6 ? I could not blame you if you did. Carrying so much gear is a real pain. For the last month or so I have also only been using a sling bag with my F3, UsiPro, Earsight Nano mics, earphones, and a few spare batteries. That's it., Super quick and easy to use. Anyway, thanks Marcel ... and Libby too. Great to hear from you again.

Yes, we love his channel too and his unbiased and honest feedback. As for the main kit, I purchased the Heimplanet Transit Line 34L bag, which allows me to bring along only the F6 and the VR microphone. Everything else, like the Schoeps and Sennheiser, goes into hibernation mode :) I have to keep everything under 8kg.

@@FreeToUseSounds OK, interesting. I remember you saying that you would use a much reduced kit in future. It makes sense with all the travelling you do. I feel the same way about carrying too much, so I'm fine now I have the F3. I don't really want anymore than that and my Usi and Earsight mics.

Hi, I just subscribed and loving your channel! I am a photographer/videographer and have a unique project I’d love some guidance or ideas with. I have an art project coming up during a total solar eclipse where I need to record outdoor ambient sounds over the duration around 10 mins. It will be birds, people, wind in trees etc and how those sounds change over the course of the eclipse/in reaction to it. It will probably be by the beach, lots of people around and their audible reactions. Probably static mounted on a stand. Capturing all the richness/immersiveness and variation of that environment in the best quality possible for a budget of less than $1000aud ideally. Been thinking a H6 or an F3, maybe xy setup or one of the zoom mic inserts? Anyone done anything similar? I’ll be filming on a couple of cameras too. I’ve been down the rabbit hole of field recording and finding it fascinating but also wary that I could easily spend way more than I should! 🤪

it is a really cool setup, but the thing with earplugs is not that easy as you would think.. I also use in-earphones when I am field recording, cause it is just easier to carry them by side, and people don't pay so much attention to you when you have such a small headphones. But as I was talking with audiologist and phoniatrist, they said that it is very much dangerous for your hearing, to use such a device. It is because, our ears aren't meant to have anything inside them, in such a close distance. And secondly, the main purpose of ear auricle is being ignored. The external part of our ear, which is very important in receiving sound, gets avoided hence the sound goes directly at the eardrum. It causes a lot of problems in our today's generation. There have been a lot of studies shown that because of earplugs being so popular, the quality of hearing among young people is getting so much worse, faster and faster every year . Just speak to your audiologist guys, and then you will know that even if it is convenient to carry, they won't recommend you to use them for long periods of time.
@FreeToUseSounds Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing your concerns about using in-earphones for field recording. We agree that it's important to be mindful of our hearing and take appropriate precautions to protect it. While in-earphones can be a convenient option for carrying and using in the field, we also acknowledge that they may not be the best choice for everyone.

Hey Dominik! Did you know that Heimplanet is a German company from Hamburg? They started with very thoughtful tents and have now expanded into bags and apparel. It's a really cool brand and I actually bought the Transit Line 34L from Heimplanet as well. In South East Asia, the sun is always strong, but it's recommended to wear sunscreen even on cloudy or overcast days. This is because harmful UV rays can still penetrate through the clouds and cause damage to the skin.

Hello Alejandro, Thank you so much for watching our videos over the past year. We just want to clear the air and let you know and others that nothing is sponsored. And if you don't believe us, we're happy to show you the receipts or you can contact Heimplanet Thailand! We found an online store that sells this product and we even showed up personally. We wouldn't even think about asking for sponsorship and would rather support small business owners. Together with the sling bag and the Heimplanet Translit Line 34L, we spent over $350. We appreciate that you like our filming style, but this is just our personal aesthetic and we wouldn't dare compromise it for a sponsored deal.
