Canadian Prepper sent me, too! Surgical nurse (retired) here and I want to build up my emergency skills.I have 3 kits; major haemorrhage/trauma kit, an ortho kit and and general kit. Will be interested to see what, or if I missed anything important. Also have two small add-ons, opthalmic and burn kits.

Stop the bleed is an excellent idea, good to see Dr Tan highlighting even good first aid kits don't have enough in them as having the skills to deal with a huge bleed is good but be presented with a first aid kit that has very little within it to help is awful when trying to deal with the bleed. Likewise good to see Dr Tan highlight that buying cheap/knock off pressure bandages is not a good idea as they fail, been there on that also and hence now we have Olaes Modular Bandages within our kit as they work!

Great Video, Thanks. Why more than one tourniquet? I would go as high as four. The trauma source that could create the need for one , could easily affect more than one limb. You have four, so... Other reasons? -If one isn't enough to stop the bleeding, you can put a second one a few inches up to supplement. Like you mentioned. -You may have more than one patient. -Never hurts to have a spare. Yes, Duck tape and paracord. Space blankets: I suggest two of the space blanket bevies. You can stuff them full of leaves and have one on top one under, to create a good insulation barrier. Getting the orange ones give you a signal panel as well. Don't forget your iodine for the Nuke scenario. Even though it is less than likely, you would put a large amount of it on your skin, and the iodine is supposed to absorb and gather in your thyroid. This would reduce the amount of radioactive iodine your body would absorb. Now for the more likely trauma scenarios, you can use it as an antiseptic and water purification. My question for you Doc: Does iodine damage tissue like the alcohol and peroxide? I was a big fan of Betadine.
@SurvivalDoctors5 ай бұрын
Awesome pointers here! I would take dedicated iodine tablets for radiation prevention compared to applying it on the skin. Diluted Iodine is less damaging to skin and that’s why I like using it. Diluted Dankin solution is also a good one to know!

A good thing to use for what would normally be a rather minor cut that won't stop bleeding is Alum. You can buy it in the grocery store in the spice isle. I've used it for years since I have hemophilia. Alum is used for pickling cucumbers. It will sting a little when applied to a cut but it does work very well.

Noted your interview with Nate at CP and interested in your thoughts/skills, watched a few of your videos and learnt a few good things already, will watch more as time allows. We are UK based and chuckle at those here who think the NHS will be there for them when SHTF. (we are some of the few that use private not state medicine here). Like that medical pack, oh and 2 tourniquets is to add another if the first one does not do the job for you. Had some friends who served with the army in Afghanistan and they brought it home to me that upgrading and increasing the tourniquets on my IFAK/large med kit was essential. Looing forward to hearing and seeing more.

Thank you doctor and yes my wife and me really want the course as i am diabetic with high blood pressure and i have a transplanted kidney however i have been busy stocking up on anti rejection meds in case i have no choice but to do a long term bug out at some point and i am determend to survive for my wifes sake. The other things i often have problems with is foot wounds so i like to take along plenty of non stick gaze pads and tape to keep infection from happening plus i plan on getting some really good antibiotics to put in there.I have a IFAC kit too plus a blood pressure cuff and pulseox machine and thanks to your video i now see what my kit is missing so i can add the needed stuff b efore its too late. Would love to video chat with you if possible for no more than an hour to get some advice from you do to my medical conditions in regards to survival/ bug out situations.

Outstanding content. Question: as a non-professional, I've heard urine is sterile. Would you be okay with using it in your syringe for irrigation/flushing/cleaning a wound, in the absence of clean fluid? Second question: I've heard dilute povidone iodine is okay for eye infections, including pink eye. Also that straight povidone iodine is likely too strong for antiseptic use. If you agree, can you recommend a dilution? Last Q: any favorite breathing technique to reduce risk of going into shock? Thanks again!
@SurvivalDoctors4 ай бұрын
Hey! All great questions! Urine is not sterile and should never be used for irrigation or drinking. I would not use iodine in the eyes especially if you don’t know the exact concentration. Pink eye can be bacterial, allergic, or viral and are often allergic or viral so having proper skills to diagnose is important.
