I really appreciate "chotto" as a way to say you don't really intend to be in the way of the other person, bc that's a thing I worry about constantly. The only way to say that in English is the whole long "sorry I don't mean to be in the way". Chotto is like pre packaged for my anxiety haha

yeah, we English speakers tend to be loose with "give me a minute".....its not really a hard and fast rule for us, even when its just "give me a second" lol. It reminds me of a teacher i had in college who is of German descent and he was telling us how confusing it was to learn "How are you?" is a token niceness rather than a full-invitation to discuss a person's day. We just say, "How are you?" as a way of saying, "hello" and you answer, "fine thanks," or something like that, and move on. Although i think the, "How are you?" thing is mostly American.

Hi Misa Sensei. I've found that I, and a lot of other Japanese learners feel like our grammar is pretty good, but our library of vocabulary isn't. In Western style schools, we just don't do bulk memorization very much. I always want to use simple verbs like 食べるとか飲むとか行くなど, and I think that's one of the biggest reasons my vocabulary is not the best. Would you think about introducing some lesser used words in your examples? I was happy to learn about 出前を取る in this video. Thanks Sensei!

ちょっと待って is quite strange for me vs. the rough indicator in English. With the latter you can give the listener an indication of when you might be free. With the former, the listener has no idea how long they are going to be waiting. Its probably confusing for someone learning English if they’re taking it as a literal time span which it isn’t.

I'm really not a "book" learner. Studying is extremely hard for me so I can't just sit down with a pen and paper and retain what I am writing. It turns into a "mechanic" of repetition rather than actual memorization and comprehension. Unfortunately, being alone doesn't help that at all.... I'll just re-watch your videos and maybe little things will stick here and there. Being 30, with my brain, make it all feel pretty hopeless honestly... Can't even get an English teaching job in Japan during COVID. How pathetic is that haha

When you were talking about going to buy something, is it possible to say ~買ってきてくれてくだだい? I was wondering if this is the same meaning but more formal, or if it is just more natural to use the dictionary form.
@aoiahiru670
@aoiahiru670 5 жыл бұрын
are you trying to say "please come and buy (it)" or "please buy (it) and come (over)"? Either way, you don't use ください after くれる because it's redundant. ください is the more formal of those two ways to request something.

こんにちわ、ミサ先生。 I have a question. Please answer! A while ago, I tried translating the song 「スパークル」 from 君の名は。as you know. So, I didn't quite understand the first line, which is 「まだこの世界は僕を飼いならしてたいみたい。」 that means, "Though, this world wants to raise me." I was supposed to be searching the meaning of most of it in a dictionary, yet, this 「飼いならしてたいみたい。」 I had google translated for me. I wonder, where does "wants to" come from? I don't see たい except for みたい. Please explain about the part 「飼いならしてたいみたい。」!!
@MarkusAndersen96
@MarkusAndersen96 5 жыл бұрын
Hey there! I'm not Misa sensei but I hope I can help! First off, 「飼いならす」means "to tame/domesticate". I'm not good at translating, but the website "anime lyrics" translate the sentence to: "This world seems like it still wants to keep me tamed". The "tai" you're looking for, is right after 「飼いならして」and right before 「みたい」- 飼いならして(たい)みたいだ - As I'm sure you already know, 「みたい」means "seems like/looks like".
