In this video, we show a sports hernia self treatment we give many of our clients. It is not the only part of treatment. Grabbing the skin around the region of the groin strain can reduce pain and stiffness with turning and twisting. Sports hernias are often misdiagnosed with hip labrum tears, hip impingement, adductor tendonitis and abdominal strains.

Sports Hernia Diagnosis
What Is A Sports Hernia?
A sports hernia is tearing of the transversalis fascia of the lower abdominal or groin region. A common misconception is that a sports hernia is the same as a traditional hernia. The mechanism of injury is rapid twisting and change of direction within sports, such as football, basketball, soccer and hockey.
The term “sports hernia” is becoming mainstream with more professional athletes being diagnosed. The following are just to name a few:
Torii Hunter
Tom Brady
Ryan Getzlaf
Julio Jones
Jeremy Shockey
If you follow any of these professional athletes, they all seem to have the same thing in common: Lingering groin pain. If you play fantasy sports, this is a major headache since it seems so minor, but it can land a player on Injury Reserve on a moments notice. In real life, it is a very frustrating condition to say the least. It is hard to pin point, goes away with rest and comes back after activity, but is hardly painful enough to make you want to stop. One the best definitions of Sport hernias is the following by Harmon:
The phenomena of chronic activity-related groin pain that it is unresponsive to conservative therapy and significantly improves with surgical repair.”
This is truly how sports hernias behave in a clinical setting. It is not uncommon for a sports hernia to be unrecognized for months and even years. Unlike your typical sports injury, most sports medicine offices have only seen a handful of cases. It’s just not on most doctors’ radar. The purpose of this article is not only to bring awareness about sports hernias, but also to educate.
Will you find quick fixes in this article for sports hernia rehab?
Nope. There is no quick fix for this condition, and if someone is trying to sell you one, they are blowing smoke up your you-know-what.
Is there a way to decrease the pain related to sports hernias?
Yes. Proper rehab and avoidance of activity for a certain period of time will assist greatly, but this will not always stop it from coming back. Pain is the first thing to go and last thing to come. Do not be fooled when you become pain-free by resting it. Pain is only one measure of improvement in your rehab. Strength, change of direction, balance and power (just to name a few) are important, since you obviously desire to play your sport again. If you wanted to be a couch potato, you would be feeling better in no time. Watching Sports Center doesn’t require any movement.
Why is this article so long?
There is a lot of information on sports hernias available to you on the web. However, much of the information is spread out all over the internet and hard for athletes to digest due to complicated terminology. This article lays out the foundational terminology you will need to understand what options you have with your injury. We will go over anatomy, biomechanics, rehab, surgery, and even the fun facts. The information I am using is from the last ten years of medical research, up until 2016. We will be making updates overtime when something new is found as well. I had to chuckle at what he said as I have been experiencing what I believed was a inguinal hernia. Throbbing, pulsating pain along the left side of my genital area. Moving into my scrotum at times. I was close to going to the doctor about it. I tried the pinch and moves you indicated and low and behold it subsided, and is almost non existent. INCREDIBLE! Thank you so, so much!!!

Hello there, I actually had a inguinal hernia and I had a mesh through laparoscopic surgery 3yrs ago. I felt great after surgery. But now after 3 yrs i feel the pain and when I visited doctor and had ultrasound, I was told that there is no leak or no tissue coming out. But I’m so depressed that I can’t do much of the workout due to pain.

That's the mesh, you might be able to have the mesh removed and the surgery redone witout it doing something like a desarda surgery instead.

I have a question I’m really confused, I had to inguinal surgeries within the past 2 years but my surgeon said it was like a sports hernia and recently I got sick and was vomiting all night ever since I’ve been having a sharp burning pain when I walk, sit , or stand. It feels like if its injured and weakness and burning idk if its a sports hernia or nerve compression, but it’s mostly burning pain.

I have had a hernia operation on my left side 5 years ago and now I have pain on my left side. However there is no bulge and the pain extends from groin, hip, thigh and down to knee. It is a constant dull pain and exist when either living down or standing. Could this be a hernia as well? TIA

I have been checked 6 times and I dont have any lumps but I do get strange pressure and sometimes hot or cold spots... I do have a herniated disc in my lumbar, thoracic and cervical from an accident 2 yrs ago. its limited my strength now by half.. I do alot of calisthenics now and cardio, but I dont lift over 200 now

Hi , was experiencing left groin area discomfort for several days after workout , i decided to stop activity for next couple days to see how it goes . Im concerned about hernia or groin muscle pulled. Also I experience flatulence more frequently than it was before as well as burping. I hope that its just a coincidence of me eating something wrong and some muscle injury. If it sounds familiar to you, should i go to a doctor and get it checked? The problem is my parents probably wont be happy about that 😢.

I feel like something is burning at the V line from the right side whenever I deadlift/squat/leg press with heavier weights although my legs/body can handle the weight just fine, but I feel like something is gonna burst if I continued the rep and I drop the weight immediately and the pain instantly goes away, what can this be?

I know he is spot on. Ive been suffering for 4 months with a sports hernia. When my lower back isnt tight the pain drop to about a 2 in the lower ab area into the scrotum area. However when my lower back is tight and hurting the pain in the lower ab area and scrotum hits a 10. Thank you for confirming this.

Wow, I was diagnosed with a sports hernia (athletic pubalgia) a few months ago and was only instructed to rest for 4-6 months. After this time I’m still having the issue come back but this skin tuft technique makes it disappear for a short time. Now, in the video you say if this technique gives relief, it’s probably not a sports hernia - so what should we do if this technique provides relief and what treatment should instead be focused on?

I did the test and the pain was not there when I pull the skin. When you mention lower back/spine problems, I do have those so that kinda makes sense as to why I have this pain in that area of the groin. Thanks for this video now im not freaking out as much.

Thank you for this informative video, I am trying to work out if I have a sports hernia or not. I feel a sharp pain in my testicle area lately, it's sporadic and I can't seem to recreate it from movements. I do run and felt it a couple of times after I ran last night.

Been trying so hard to figure out my exact situation: i had motorcycle accident 10 months back where i injured my groin, initialy it was detected as a small indirect inguinal hernia, and few days later a small permanent buldge appeared which makes it look like i have a bigger right oblique. Few months in i did multiple ultrasounds and 1 ct scan all negative of hernia but till today i feel pain, it ranges from 10 to 2 at times (on a scale of 10). With 2 most of the time since last 3-4 months and rarely 10. The funny thing is i can lift as i have been going to the gym and even did a deadlift of 80kg, i do not feel a change of pain with lifting but the pain and the bulge just doesn't go away, kinda sick of it and i am not able to understand if i it is a nerve entrapment or an actual hernia. Hernia surgeons told me i have a hernia and said some hernias can miss ct scan and ultrasounds, and the buldge says u have a hernia. But my question is why doesnt it hurt with workouts? And if there is this damm buldge why does it not show on ct scan? I have been mentally tortured with this nerve pain as well as a weird or tightness feeling in my right groin

Same here. I can lift easily without pain or lack of mobility. Its just a sort of phantom groin pain when standing long or walking.

find surgeon who is doing usg, you should do valsova manuver and doc should see for example intestine in inguinal canal, it can be really small, thats why surgeon should do this.

My hips have been killing me from riding my bike and a bad choice of furniture as well as some foot injuries that I limped through. Now I have this referred pain in my hips. My left hip was so bad I could not move my knee to pull the gas cap lever at the gas station sue to severe pain. That has now totally subsided but the right hip is now the one that hurts right up at the junction of the thigh and pelvis. And now I have intermittent slight swelling of the lower right pelvic area that is only there when I walk a fair distance and my hip starts hurting. It's not a hernia because it doesnt move at all when coughing or straining and that area doesnt hurt t the gym when lifting -- just the hip adductors and hip flexors when I shift my weight slightly or change direction or do abduction. I went to a chiropractor and he checked my pelvic alignment and found my right leg was much much shorter than my left which didnt surprise me as I had an old high school injury that caused a tilt. I took two NSAIDs last night and had major relief. This morning the swelling was there slgihtly but went right back down. The swelling looks almost like just skin or fluid.

We see people weekly who have tried stretches from KZbin (including ours) and have not found success. I have random sharp sensation in my groin area and right before it started, I felt my lower back flare up. Never had lower back issues before and no visible bumps in groin and it doesn't hurt much. Is that more indicative of a nerve issue?

Can a sports hernia also cause penis tingling / sensitivity to touch? I think I have a sports hernia on the right side of my groin, and when I press down onto my groin with my index finger, it feels numb / hurts. When I do your sports hernia exercises, it feels like only the right area of my groin is inflamed

Sir two weeks ago I had sports hernia so with rest my pain was reduce but two days ago I started again soccer and during game I feel that my muscle turns( like shakes) and it released pain then I came to home and I was taking rest for 1 week again now I can walk good but when I stretching my that leg so my muscle release little bit pain so sir I m scare that if I start again my soccer game it can again occur this pain so sir what should i do

I was doing deadlifts one day and went home and sneezed and felt pain right in the area you are grabbing. What could it be? Could I have caused an injury by sneezing? lol. I at times have pain but mostly when I cough or sneeze.

Hello. I went to a few doctors in my country 2 said I have a hip labral tear, 1 said I might have sports hernia, 1 said I am just OK. This diagnosis determined after all those doctors saw my MRI. My case is really strange. If I have a sports hernia was I going to feel something like a click in the hip area or it is never the case. When I played football I heard and felt a very audible click in respond to that one of the doctors said with sports hernia is never the case, but the other doctor I went to said it could happen to hear a click sound. Totally confused. Can you please give your opinion if possible.... Thanks in advance.

I had mesh surgery for incisional hernia fr left side ..few months before i found another from right side..doc told me it is 6 mm tear..they told me to go for core exercises to strengthen my core...M worried always..i don't want to go for same painful surgery again..plz suggest

Go consult a general surgeon. I've had a inguinal hernia repair operation, the reason of this occurring was the same as yours, my child jumped on my stomach when I was relaxed.

Hi, I've bought your Sport's Hernia and Althetic Pubalgia videos and I've been following them along. Everything seemed to improve until the 8th last week when the symptoms came crashing down again. Since then I've found this video and what do you know - the pain subsides when doing the "skin grab test" - but I can't find the information how to proceed if the test came out positive. Hello in my day to day I don’t feel any pain at all in my groin area and when I do any type of weight lifting exercise I do not feel it. I only feel zipper like pain in the squat movement which is making me very confused. Please help. It’s like a ripping feeling but I don’t have any pain or difficulty in ANY other areas of my life

I don't play sport the only thing I can remember doing is dragged a heavy bag of coal. But one day I felt uncomfortable pain in my groin to my left testicle. The doc said it ain't hernia cuz no lump. So a year on and I cant go for a simple walk its uncomfortable more than sore I guess but I'm looking up KZbin to see what is the difference between hernia and groin strain

hernias are actual disruptions of the abdominal cavity where the intestines can come through. Strains are not tissue disruptions

I have one or two small bumps for like the last two years on the middle of my right groin line. It hurts when I intentionally stress the muscles around my groin and even more when I rotate my leg and try to stress the muscles. Also when i recently swam with all those leg movements, the next day after waking up , I'm feeling pain around the region of that bump. Right now I'm suspecting that there is a tear of my abdominal wall and a small portion of my intestine has caused the bump. Please share your views.

Can golf cause this type of injury? I mainly have pain in my lower back on the left side. But it sorta radiates to the left groin area as well. No bulges or anything that I can see or feel.

hey came across your vid and i have this lower abb pain and it hurts just like u explained all across those nerves and my right hip even hurts too when i pull the skin were u grabed and squat the pain goes to 10 but it seem that it hurts only when i ben over or squat now i work out and haven't gone to the gym in 2 weeks hoping to feel better but still the same when i grab the skin and squat it feels like a sharp burning pain plz help is someone can tell me what this is thx

Thought I had a saddle sore from mountain biking but think it could be hernia but it's the top of my inner right leg I noticed some discomfort about a hour into a bike ride Thought nothing of it rearranged myself felt better seen some redness in the shower the next day felt uncomfortable when I woke up checked myself and it looks like a hernia has popped out been trying to manipulate it but it feels solid and it's fairly painful for about a week should I bother the doctor or is there something else I can do thanks

Hey ! Hope you are doing well and great content on your channel that is super helpful :) . Just had a quick question. Is it possible to get a sports hernia after a very rigorous massage and not from playing sports ? I had a massage done and felt some acute pain when the therapist applied too much pressure at the iliopsoas region. This was about 2.5 months ago and though the pain is a lot better, there is still some pain on and off in the area which has become hard to pinpoint and does resemble some symptoms that you describe of sports hernia on your channel. Just wanted your thoughts on this ! Thanks

We always say “the injury must match the mechanism.” A massage is not the mechanism for a sports hernia, nor is deadlifting, sleeping, driving, sit ups or back squats but there are many reasons for very similar problems that have almost exact symptoms. I've been to the doctors and they say I have no bulge or hernia. But I have very bad pain from the lower abdomen all the way down to the inner thigh and scrotal/pubic area. This came after doing muay thai kicks and it has been 5months and still no recovery. Do I have a sports hernia?

Hey what's up @Interloper322, any updates on your pain? Is it gone? If so, what did you do to get rid of it? I think I have a sports hernia from wheel kicks. I saw a doctor, he thought I might have had an inguinal hernia, but Ultrasound and CT scan showed nothing. So a sports hernia is my next guess. I have another Dr's appointment again in a couple months. So we'll see, it's really lowering my quality of life and these doctors are taking their sweet time.

I don’t feel any pain while doing you’re exercise, but when I mimic what I did to hurt it, I have pain. But I have been bloated as of late when I eat. Having (what I thought was )Sports Hernia pain which just majically showed up one day while I was doing reverse lunges. I am recovering from TKA (same side as groin pain). I have been increasing weight with my leg workouts and thought I had developed a Sp hernia. After seeing this, I am a little confused. Tried your test and it seemed to lower the pain quite a bit when doing rev lunges. Is grabbing the skin and doing the excercise that is bothering the area (rev lunges) a way to treat the nerve issue or would your turns and hip circles be a better treatment? (I am in Utah and not in CA so it would be hard for me to see you in person) I am having simultaneous acute pain (sometimes extreme) in my back. Sometimes it feels like it is on the lower inside edge of my right shoulder blade and recently feels, slightly lower, mid back(ish) on the same side as the groin issue. After watching your video, I am convinced that my groin issue is not a tear and this other back pain, now seems really suspicious to me. The back pain seems to be nagging almost all of the time, but gets really acute spasms when I am getting up from laying back (could be rising up from bed or a lot of the bad spasms have happened after rising up from doing leg press machine at the gym.

I have lower back pinch pain 4-10 in movement right side as well as testicle right nut area and right leg 🦵feels num. I did test and still have pain. When relaxing it's ok but when I turn or want to get off bed it's nearly impossible. When to ER they said I'm good they didn't give me nothing.

I have groin pain as well as a little pain in my right testicle it is normal ?? My doctor said to wear a supporter or tights for atleast 1 week ( I am a football player )

I felt a shock in my lower left abdominal while trying to do my first rip of horizontal leg press machine it's been 3 moths already since I stopped workout and never recovered and pain comes back after strain myself and when I cough from a flue

hi, I dont feel much of anything but I feel it around the area you pulled only and only when i just started to run in a game (soccer) and after a few minutes and when i warmed up I dont feel it.I also feel a little bit if i do leg raises when i lean very backwards almost flat but still my back is not touching ground but those are kinda rare most prominent is the one when i start running until i got warmed up...I feel it when I twist my foot 90 degrees to inside standing. any ideas?
