Hello from a Vancouver Island girl. I came upon your channel & am oh so very glad I did! I've had a gel plate for a couple of years & have used it now & then, but with the dollar store acrylic paints I find it hard to do much as they dry so fast. Maybe I need to apply more? I didn't want to purchase expensive paints when I was just starting out. I am so grateful for your video Karen! I like the length of it as you showed so many options & colour combos. I'm going to go break out my lonely 5 x 7 gel plate & watch again & play. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your talent & inspire me. I make cards & would love to use some of the types of backgrounds you made on the front of some of them. I'm also subscribing.

Hello fellow Vancouver Islandite? So glad you found me and that you like what you see and that it's given you some direction. I have used craft paints of varying price points on the gel print and they react differently. In fact each medium will be different. If I remember correctly I did end up using more paint when I used craft paint. Bear in mind each craft paint brand is different too. I like using Liquitex Basics when gel printing....although at first it was an adjustment. I also use the Michaels brand Artist Loft. If you want to try this...just pick a few colors ( your favorite color combo for instance) and try it with your plate to see if you like those results first before committing to buying lots of that kind of paint. Another thing...I have used the medium bodied acrylics with the craft paint...you can definitley mix and match.

I love the patterns and color combinations you created here. My go-to ‘abstract’ mark maker is a plastic grocery sack. This leaves a scattered linear texture in the paint. Usually good for 1st layer and then add more layers with stencils, stamps, etc. I borrowed this technique from Gerda Lipski, a German abstract artist whose youtube videos include many painting techniques that can be combined with gel printing. She also has gel printing videos!

I'm also going to do a mixed media work on a board of flowers tearing pieces of gel plate made papers for the flower petals, leaves, vase etc. I have the basic sketch done and now the fun part!!! I covered 2 inch wide stripes of a pasta box with some of my own paper and made myself a few book marks instead of the usual odd stuff I have used in the past. @ShoshiPlatypus2 жыл бұрын
I find the best paint for pulling off the grunge at the end of a session is Golden brand. These paints are expensive but they are very rich in pigment and you don't need much. Their fluid Quinacrodone Nickel Azo Gold is a fabulous translucent red-gold and pulls like magic. I like the colour because it goes perfectly with my favourite earth-tones/neutral colour palette. For a true metallic gold for gel printing, stencilling etc., their Iridescent Bronze Fine is the best I have ever used. I adore this paint! I also really like Arteza paints for the same reason - very pigment-rich, and also much cheaper than Golden. My favourite at the moment as a pale background is their Pearl Banana Yellow which looks absolutely fabulous when you are pulling up black grunge.

I have some non-slip bath mats that have tiny protrusions, along with suction cups, and if the annoy me or take away from my desired result, I will snip them off with side cutters, jewelry making cutters, and the like. Even the back becomes an interesting grungy cut-up result. So much fun! TFS

This was fun--love the DT mark makers--brilliant! I'm of the belief that ONE XL gel plate is far better than several smaller ones (unless you're using them as stamps, for that--small hand-held plates all the way) but having ONE XL plate has many benefits: only have to buy ONE only have to store ONE can do many sizes --I've a 12x12 so I can do (in one swoop, rather than several pulls) 12x12 and 8.5x11 and ANY SIZE smaller--right down to index cards and small tags--if you're working with 4x6 sheets--well then just ink/add paint to one corner of the XL plate my favorite: NO flippin' white borders to deal with (either reprint several times or cut them off --both HUGE waste of time and paper) This method too, could certainly be used on a single large plate--NO reason to buy/store/deal with 16 different sizes...
@KarenBurchill2 жыл бұрын
I bought an 11 X 14 plate....thinking as you do..but I have not found it to be as I thought...maybe I need to revisit it....although I did like not having the white borders....I guess the key is find out what works best for you and then do it...Happy gel printing. K
@ShoshiPlatypus2 жыл бұрын
That's quite a thought. I've got the usual A4-ish sized one. I don't have a lot of room on my gel printing table. Do you have any videos/blog posts etc. where you show how you use your XL plate? This is most intriguing!
@TheCrabbyCrafterlol2 жыл бұрын
@@ShoshiPlatypus It's on the never-ending list of videos to be done. lol It's really no different than using the smaller ones for pulling prints (as I said, using it for stamping is just too much--not impossible but not convenient, lol) I do have a "my take on" on this topic-- kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqDbonSantmol9E&feature=share&si=ELPmzJkDCLju2KnD5oyZMQ --but I will certainly do a video on using the big boy.

@KarenBurchill2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. True that all dollar stores are not the same...but go for a walk through yours and see what "treasures" you can find. I will use some of the gel prints as the background to start an art journal or mixed media piece ....just cut it to size, glue down and maybe add some things. I also use rip a strip where I rip prints and combine a couple colors to break a page. You'll see me doing this in many of my video tutorials. K

Hi Karen. I haven't opened my new gel plate yet so I have no experience whatsoever in geli-printing. That's why I'm watching your video! I have to ask: The very first stage (0:55) coating the paper. Why do you use the gel plate for this instead of applying paint straight to the paper? Just curious and trying to learn! 🙂
@KarenBurchill4 ай бұрын
Honestly you could do it with a brush but doing it on the gel plate gets you using your gel plate and getting the feel of brayering on the paint. It also leaves some residue on the plate which gets picked up on the following pulls. It is also way faster to cover the pages using the gel plate and you get a different look...more imperfect or organic ...and loads more texture. Hope that helps...now open your gel plate and get rolling...don't overthink it....just play with colors .

Ok so I gave it a try and it totally works....if clean mark makers are important to you...do it right after gel printing session so it comes off super easy. Dont wait for it to build up. If they have build up over time they take longer and some muscle and time. I'd rather be creating so will probably use it till it is unusable ( if that happens) and buy another one, especially if they are cheap and readily sourced.

I found that Murphy’s Oil Soap is also a great cleaner for stencils and other art tools! Just soak with the MOS and hot water, give a swish and most of the paint actually flacks off. A little scrub with a soft brush gets the rest.

What do you use all the prints for?
@KarenBurchill2 жыл бұрын
I use them as instant backgrounds. as collage materials, in paper painting, to make art journals, to cover composition books....watch pretty much any of my videos and you will see me using them in some way. K

Question I got this Liquitex matte medium can I use this instead of the gesso clear
@KarenBurchill2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can...both work as an adhesive....and will make the surface non=porous....Some clear gessos are gritty....and may allow you to do some techniques but for what I typically do are interchangeable. K

Can you do this on fabrics?
@KarenBurchill2 жыл бұрын
I've seen videos where they do put it on fabric but I haven't tried it at all so not sure how it works. K

If you are struggling to pull up dried paint, put a thinner layer of paint on then leave the paper on until it doesn’t feel as cool to the touch. The time allows the top layer of paint to bond to the lower layers and your paper 😊
