For those of you wondering why the mother is keeping it in the nest instead of dropping it out of the nest is probably because she plans on feeding the dead chick to the other chicks
@LenkaSaratoga4 жыл бұрын
Wow. Kinda disturbing.
@mikemusic63187 жыл бұрын
Most birds produce three or four eggs. The first two chicks that hatch have the best chance of survival. That is because the first two to hatch get food first. This gives them a substantial advantage over other chicks hatched even the same day. They start growing immediately and are bigger and stronger than other the other chicks that hatch even the same day. The parents know that they can only feed two chicks to maturity. By the time the chicks are ready to leave the nest, they are 90 per cent grown. The parents are exhausted and starving. Sometimes the parents will kill the weakest chicks, and sometimes the older, stronger chicks will kill the weaker chicks. That way only to two strongest will survive. If the parents tried to feed all the chicks to maturity, all the chicks would die, and probably the parents would die of starvation.

They can actually successfully feed and bring to maturity 3 and sometimes 4 chicks. It just depends on if both parents are around and feeding the chicks and if they have a good enough food source where they are. It's not always only the first 2 chicks that survive and fledge.

Regarding the comments about killing quicker, some of the parents just throw the chick out of the nest. It is a long way down, but the chick dies quick.
@tondalayakapoofnick26812 жыл бұрын
Most of them keep it for food.
@ArclinusCastoral2 жыл бұрын
Regardless of the chick dying at all once ejected from the nest, it's no longer the parents' problem and they do not contain the capacity for a mercy such a quick death. Some scavenger will find the chick in whatever state it's in. Regardless, it is consigned to death and, like some have mentioned, perhaps before it was even laid as an egg depending on which egg it was.
@valariesrisingsun79376 жыл бұрын
The mother must know something isn't quite right with that one, and it could be sick or weak and she will completely stop feeding it and will get rid of it. Bird's are very set in their ways and you have to be strong in nature to make it.
@BrayanA6 жыл бұрын
The chick is not sick, it is just the smallest one. Unfortunately birds have no chance to know if the egg will hatch. The lay more eggs just in case. If all of them hatch and the parent see that there is no food for all of them, the smallest (in 99% the last to hatch) would be sacrificed in order to improve the chance of the others.
@janemillerick96147 жыл бұрын
she also made (a short) attempt on the one who's just older (than the now nearly dead one.) I've also noticed that this year her own health is off. (sneezing never really went away; I remember that she was doing that quite a lot when she was hesitant to mate.) they really aren't as 'harsh' as ..well, some species of white storks.
@liznm-natur-channel7 жыл бұрын
I fear, if furthermore not enough food, even the other chick must die. Change and feeding was every 5 hours. That is not enough! The chicks are much too small in relation to the chicks in 2015 and 2016. The spring was dry, so the situation is not good for the animals. Not just for the storks.
@janemillerick96147 жыл бұрын

Now I see how harsh this species is. The baby was thriving in an earlier feeding today by Karl. And it has been fine in spite of many prior shakings by Katie. Now the other babies are traumatized seeing this constant treatment of the baby and even covering the baby with their bodies. Little baby, I wish someone would rescue you.
@DoubleDogDare547 жыл бұрын
Judy, in some avian species it is the siblings that attack and kill the weakling nest mates. In others where hatching is staggered instead of simultaneous, the older chicks devour the younger chicks - they are a food source for the first chicks that hatch out. Chances are this smaller chick would have died anyway. There is some reason for it being a runt and that reason is never good for them. I doubt the other storklets were "traumatized" by what their old lady did to the runt. You are anthropomorphizing the incident. They probably didn't even notice what was going on or that their nest mate was gone. They aren't that intelligent.
@judywright84557 жыл бұрын
It wasn't sick nor a runt. Looked very healthy. Just the youngest born. I think the Mom didn't want to feed four chicks. Too many for that nest and too much pressure for food. Maybe she never raised four chicks yet. So she isolated it for starvation and the Dad got in on the action once the chick became so weak. Now I know....This is the beautiful black stork. The other three chicks fledged and returned to the nest many times. All in all it was a successful nest. God bless the last little chicks in all the species.
@DoubleDogDare547 жыл бұрын
This pair did the same thing last year, same circumstances. One chick was definitely smaller than the rest and it got the axe, courtesy of dad that time. The eggs all hatched out at pretty much the same time so, yes, this chick and the 2016 chick this pair killed were runts. With the amount of fish, eels, frogs and other food this pair were hauling to the nest, and the size of the crops on the chicks that lived, I don't see a sign that food was an issue. But the failure of a chick to thrive and grow at a normal rate prompted mom this year and dad last year to cull the weakling and not bother trying to raise it.

Idk if you noticed, pal, but animals don't have morals like we humans do. They do anything to improve their survival
@BrayanA6 жыл бұрын
And what you suggest her to do? Animals are not stupid. Sometimes difficult decisions have to be made - to risk loosing all of her kids or to sacrifice the smallest chick. Unfortunately birds have no chance to know if the egg will hatch. The lay more eggs just in case and hope that at least one will be OK. If all of them hatch and the parent see that there is no food for all of them, the smallest (in 99% the last to hatch) would be sacrificed in order to improve the chance of the others. That is not stupid strategy. That is a smart survival strategy. It may look cruel by our human standards, but nature does not care about feelings.

Ava P I think your right, this is a way for them to keep the stronger chicks than to have weaker ones and at the end it will die because it cannot cope up in competence of eating with quicker and stronger chicks so the mother kills it fast, its a sad truth.
@kathrynhutchens50665 жыл бұрын
It may be that the runt is eating more than its share of the food. It would be unrealistic but the parent is not equipped to set the little gobbler out of the reach of the food after it has eaten some & let the others have a chance to eat. # 3 can finally get to eat.

WOW 😲, getting big gusts of wind causing tHa nest to sway back and forth! It seems to me that if tHa parents would perform tHa brood reduction a week or two earlier, they'd be able to kill easier and wouldn't cause tHa selected storklet so much unnecessary torture!💔 If tHa Parent Storks would take a hint from Jackie and Shadow of BBV/L...( don't know if All Eagles or Birds of Prey practice this) They don't brood on tHa first egg tHa whole time, giving tHa following eggs a chance to be tHa same size as tHa oldest Eaglet when hatched)! AN INTERESTING CONCEPT NO DOUBT! Look at tHa frightened siblings hugging one another, thinking: "Don't pick me, I don't wanna play this game"!

Looks to me like she studies the weakling carefully. She shakes it and tries to get it to react and stand up straight. But separating it from the others and putting it out of the nest is also keeping the healthy chick's safe if the weakling is sick. If it's too weak to get back to the warmth of the nest, it will die of cold. Much easier death than falling or predation. If all the chick's were healthy, strong & evenly matched, I doubt the mother would kill any of them just because of the number of chicks.

Walang Anoman We simply understand that these are the facts of life and this is how this species behaves. It is clearly easier to watch for some than others but you have to factor in your irrationality about the situation and how the situation affects you emotionally. Clearly you are being irrational as you have just labelled 4 people whom you know nothing about "heartless cunts". While I don't really care what you think, I do care that we have irrational people roaming the earth which is quite detrimental to the human race as a whole. Just because you do not understand something, does not mean the animals are doing bad things. That's human thinking. Nature is nature. Humans wants,that the nature work the way he thinks. This can not go well.

liznm American eagles are good parents, don't kill their young. The siblings can hurt or kill one or the other, they are ruthless over food..I saw an eagle dad try to stop an older chick from killing a runt, several times. He even covered the runt over with nest grasses to hide it. The older one didn't forget, kept looking for it. It finally died, anyway. It wasn't lack of food, most chicks are killers.. Nearly all bird species's..

This is what happens when you’re a single parent and too many mouths to feed. What happens up on the tree stays up on the tree.
