Yes from stress and abuse. The chick was fine and thriving all along, even at the morning feeding this day. But Katie has been picking it up and shaking it by the head the past week as if to threaten it. Seems Katie didn't like the baby's size. This am Katie removed the baby from the nest area and kept shaking it, throwing it around, and no food of course. Now the baby is so weak and Dad is in on the action to oust the baby. How sad. Best try not to be the last born chick in this species. I read the detailed post about species behavior by another viewer. Thanks for the info. It's so cruel to see this in real life.

A stray cat had her babies in my backyard. They were old enough to see and walk around when I noticed they were back there. The mother grabbed one of the kittens with her mouth. Pulled the kitten to the side and started eating the kitten. All I heard was a cracking sound. When I noticed what she was doing. I was like WTF she bit the kittens head off. The mother cat looked at me and keeped eating away.

This momma bird is showing typical behavior. Flipping, pecking, slight tossing, stepping. Are signs she's desperately trying to bring her chick back. Like most birds during nesting they try their hardest to raise all their chicks. Of course this chick is obviously the smallest and was probably starved by it's siblings, at this moment in time momma bird had no chance to stop it because well only strongest will live. It is obvious she's checking the chick to see if it's alive. If it is but is rapidly dying she'll have no choice then to dispose of the chick because if she leaves it she risks her chicks of either getting sick or predators will easily find the nest from the dead chicks smell. If it is dead she'll just do the same. This is very common with nesting birds and it is something we have to accept.

It is typical in some species, the chick that is born last will be smaller and weaker than its siblings, the latest arrival of the brood will not be able to compete to grab the food brought to the nest by the mother and day after day hir health will worsen . As you can see the brothers are bigger and he is small and gracile because of food. The mother instead of helping him choose the strongest and abandon the weaker one.This is a pity it would suffice that the mother was more careful in the first 2 weeks to give food even to the last born, it would become as strong as the brothers. It happens in many species above all among birds of prey where the last born is eaten and the firstborn survives. Do you think a little about our women when they have to choose a partner, do you notice any analogy? :)

It seems to me, that the chick was dead by some reason and the mum need to remove the dead body away from the nest and from other chicks....but struggle to toss her child away even she knew it was dead.....so heart breaking! So much pain! I would not think that she had killed the chick otherwise she wouldn't be so struggle to remove the dead body and avoided to look at it almost like she was hoping the dead body would drop itself down the tree! Poor mother! What's worst? Others think she killed her chick....
