2 things - The windscreen is adjustable, if you suffer from buffeting it is set at higher side, lower it then you wont feel more and please wear earplugs on highways - The shifts are notchy, Yes. I think it needs a slipper clutch more than quickshifter. I found the clutch-less upshifts smother than downshifts which are very notchy in mine especially when downshifting quickly

Nice video. I bought a brand new 2012 650 as my first bike and it does make a great learner bike, that's for sure. I was about 45 minutes in to my first ride on it which convinced me a 300cc would not have been the right choice for me. Pretty much everything you said about the bike in your video is spot on. The only thing I'd add is the suspension is kind of crap. It's great for the road, but for more spirited riding it's not the best. At the 650's price point you're not going to get a great suspension though. That's what happens when a manufacturer tries to keep the price of the bike low. I will say this about the suspension, even though it's not so great, it is predictable. When your pushing the bike to the limits the bike starts to slide in a very predictable manner making it easy to recover. Another think I like about the bike is it is slow. In full tuck I've only managed to get 127mph out of it according to my GPS. At the track 600s kick my butt all day on the throttle. If I want to play I need to lean other skills to make me fast like braking and turning. To me, the skills like braking, turning, body position, picking your line, setting up a pass, etc., are more important than learning how to go fast in a straight line. The 650 is a good for learning those things. The 650's brakes were just ok, butswapping out the stock brake pads for a good set of EBC high heat pads and replacing the brake fluid with a good racing fluid and the brakes on this bike are fantastic. The only other observation I have about this bike is tire life. Because the engine has so much torque, and I engine brake hard while down shifting, I go through rear tires really fast. A Dunlop Q3, for instance, only lasts me about 2500 miles whereas on my 600 that tire lasts 2-3 times as long. On my 600 I got 12,000 miles out of an S21. So this bike will eat tires if you are a little more spirited with your riding. Just curious, how often do you shift i to 7th gear in this bike? Without that gear shift indicator I keep thinking there ought to be another gear.
@mntwofiveohh37877 жыл бұрын
A Bike and Its Boy First off I love your channel name. Ha i often find myself in 6th looking for that 7th gear that I will never have. So far this bike has been awesome. What do you think about the zx10? Thinking about moving up come spring
@abikeanditsboy34497 жыл бұрын
I really like the ZX10R. I sat on a 2017 with no fluids in it and was shocked at how light it was. The 650, even thought it's flickable, it's heavy. I could have easily bought a ZX10R but it was more fun drooling over it. Instead, I ended up buying a ZX6R for a couple reasons. First, I really want to improve my riding skills. My ZX6R doesn't have the electronics that the ZX10R has. I've got no ABS, no traction control, no wheelie control, no power modes, nothing. To get good on the ZX6R I have to work actually learn my riding skills. The other thing that made me want to go with a 600cc was a friend of mine. This guy is one of the "aliens" at track days. He rode an old ZX6R and is one of the smoothest and fastest guys on the track. (He's also a riding instructor and has given me a lot of great advice pretty much from the day I started riding.) I should also note that my ZX6R is also set up as a racing bike, it has about $7,500 in racing bits on it. This guy took it out on track and after a session on it he told me that it would take a long time outgrow this bike. I'm pretty confident I made the right decision with the ZX6R. The 1000cc bikes have great top end and accelerate faster that the 600's, obviously. But the guys who ride them all say the same thing, they're harder to turn than a 600. Given on how I plan on using this bike, I think the 600cc was the right choice for me. Will I get a 1000cc some day? Probably. If you ride sportbikes I think it's required by law or something that we all have to own or have once owned a 1000cc one day. A couple other things. The step from the 650 to the 600 was easy from a power prospective. What was really different was the riding position. You go from the very upright position with wide bars to a much more aggressive position with narrow clip-ons. At first I was like, "How do people turn these things?" It didn't take too long to get used to it. Now I find the 600 more comfortable than the 650. (And this is coming from someone who has had 2 spinal surgeries and a knee reconstruction after being wiped out on my bicycle by a car.) Anyway, that's my $0.02. Coming from a track prospective and how I want to grow, the 600 made sense. I should also tell mention that I did ride a BMW S1000RR before getting the ZX6R and that was one fun bike. I was very comfortable on it and thought I could have a lot of fun with a bike like that. Given that you seem to make smart decisions while riding you should have no trouble with a 1000 should you want one. Peace bro, and stay safe out there!!!

A Bike and Its Boy hey mate just curious how comfortable would be on long distance rides
@mntwofiveohh37877 жыл бұрын
It is not too bad. The nice thing about the 650 is the upright riding position. The seat is pretty comfortable, and the bars are positioned nicely.
@abikeanditsboy34497 жыл бұрын
Levi Moffatt - The 650 is a pretty comfy bike. The riding position is pretty upright. I've ridden 1050 miles on it in a day with no problem at all and then gone out the next day and ridden another 600+. My only grip is where the pegs are put my bum knee in an awkward position and it can start to ache a little bit after 8-9 hours on the bike. Some might disagree with this, but I'm actually more comfortable on the ZX6R then I am on the 650. The more aggressive riding position just feels more comfortable to me.

my roomate sold me his 2011 ninja 650 as my first bike. It has been great and still love it. We take rides up into the hills and mountains near by and i can keep up with his gsxr 600 as long as its not a fast straight and he gets into the high end. One thing I dont think you mentioned is the bike has a strong feel to downshifting which i love coming from driving trucks and other manual cars. I rarely have to use the brakes except when coming to a full stop.

thanks for the review! Im a total beginner and my ultimative goal is to have zx-6r someday. however I want to learn how to ride first and planned to start on a r3 and switch to the 600 after 1-2 years. now I am seriously considering just to start on the ninja 650 right off the bat, cause I heard that so many people get bored so quickly on their 300. on the ninja 650 I might also expand the time when I upgrade to the 600. quite a tough decision :)
@mntwofiveohh37876 жыл бұрын
I agree omegapsi847. Just take a look at craigslist or any other online marketplace. They are flooded with 250s and 300s. Those bikes are great dont get me wrong but leave a little lacking in the power department. The newer 650 bikes offer a bunch of low end torque and enough power to cruise at 100 on the hwy. if you are looking for other 650 options check out the kawasaki z650 and suzuki sv650. They are both popular naked bikes. I hope you can buy a bike soon and join the two wheeled life!
@RobertNixAlternativeArtist3 жыл бұрын
R3 is an excellent starter bike for a complete beginner then after a few years when you've perfected your riding skills you can upgrade(if you really want to) but the ZX-6R is very very costly to insure so you better have a good job if that's the bike you choose-the ninja650 would be a better choice-plenty of power and way cheaper to insure.

Although the 650r doesn't square up to the supersport 600's or liter bikes it is a happy medium and fun in the corners!

Edgar Palacios they made some changes in the body i believe. Mine has a two piece seat which is nice, different dash and maybe a little more power from a retuned ecu. Not sure on that last part though. Its been a great all around bike. To be honest i dont spend most of my time breaking speed limits anyways so im more than happy with the great acceleration that the 650 offers.

The newer one (2017+) had significant changes. 40 pounds weight loss and some more torque at the cost of a little bit less top end with a completely new design inspired by the zx10r. Dunno if its worth upgrading for, but it definitely is a good improvement for a commuter / city bike.

I bought a ZX6R and it took a little getting use to coming from a 650. Mainly the riding position. Since the 300 has a bit more aggressive riding position that shouldn't be a huge deal. When you actually learn the skills you need to properly handle a 300, the 600 shouldn't be too intimidating. Get out there and do a couple riding school trackdays where you have professional instructors and get the basics down. Once you've kinda mastered the 300 then look to a 600. (Depending on what you want the bike for.) Regardless, 3-4 trackdays with a reputable riding school will be money well spent ... trust me.

What kind of bike is it and what year. Some bikes require the kickstand to be up and the clutch pulled in. Check obvious stuff like making sure key is on and kill switch is on. After those simple things start with the battery. Us a volt meter should read like 12-13 I think. After that could be a number of things from kickstand sensor to whatever else

If i were you i would upgrade to the ninja 650 you will see a larger boost in power and features. @mntwofiveohh37875 жыл бұрын
The first thing to do is obviously look for any damage, do a visual inspection of the chain ( looking for rust or lots of slack). This will help gauge how well its been taken care of. Next ask him to leave the bike cold for an hour before showing up. Start the bike up in neutral and listen for any loud grinding or ticking. The 650s are pretty quiet so just listen for hard startup and other noises. Let the bike warm up till you hear the fan kick in. Lastly its time for a ride. If you can take it out and get it up to normal street speed thats ideal. Test the breaks.. should be smooth and consistent with no pulsing. Check that the steering feels smooth and even. If it all checks out it should be a good deal. And hopefully you will be riding home with a big smile on your face. Ha this comment just gave me a good idea for a video to make. Thanks man!

Sounds like a pretty good deal. I did a little research and you can get a 2017 for around 7000-7500. Ones the same year as mine are about 4500 and up. The 2008 had slightly different styling and a single piece seat but similar power and torque. Miles could also play a fair amount into pricing. How many does the one you are looking at have? @mntwofiveohh37876 жыл бұрын
The er6n was the predecessor to the z650 from what i can tell. The z has a number of differences such as a lighter swing arm, centrally mounted rear suspension and different head light design. They maintain similar riding positions and outputs. My newest bike, the z1000 has many of the same aspects but with a much more powerful 4 cylinder engine. Of course these naked bikes sport a more peppy low to mid range compared to their super sport brothers. My 650 from a stop had more more power than a 600 but fizzled out quickly.
