How was he gonna help him the driver knew exactly what he was doing he tried getting in with the tandems back because thats how shippers prefer them for the safety of their forklift drivers but he decided he needed to slide them to get into the dock. He didn’t need nobody’s help.

Humanity's nature, laugh at, criticize, some find it easier to use rearward move of the tandems so to guide the trailer by looking at the tires path, it works for some people, at the end of the day, getting the trailer in the spot is all.

I was at the Tracy, CA rest area parked next to a driver parked facing the wrong way at 0300 hrs, he tries to back up and get turned the right way to leave and can't do it. I asked him if he needed help and he was so happy! I told him I'm not a teacher: so I can't tell you how to do it...but, if you want I will do it for you and he hopped into the passenger seat and I got him turned around. I remember what it was like to be a noob and was glad to help him! My friend said I was that guy's hero, I'm no hero: just willing to help if it's needed.

Did you ask him how he ended up that way?
@32springstreetnyc94
@32springstreetnyc94 8 жыл бұрын
+Adam Katt I did! He drove behind all the trucks and missed the one space so he went to exit and instead of exiting made the left to come back into the rest area right into that spot! Now as wrong as this is, it would have been no problem if he was good at backing: He'll learn...if he sticks with driving!

No the reason you slide your tandems is for weight distribution. Yes it may help with tighter turns but the only reason we have sliding tandems is to control the weight on the axles.
@johnb4013
@johnb4013 7 жыл бұрын
I agree... when your scaling out with your load to be legal. HOWEVER, sliding tandems (especially on these newer trailers that have better slider mechanisms) is a great option to make the tight bend into a dock that was built in 1950-something when trailer were 40' long or less. once you get the trailer straight and lined up for the dock, then you can slide them all the way to the back if you want. I've done this many times in my 30+ years.

He totally had it with the tandems to the rear. Don't know why he didn't persist. That said, I do most of my driving in Cali, so I'm used to backing with the tandems forward. Unless I'm really not meshing with the dock when a forklift drives in, I just leave them forward all day.

Yea, it's true, but some stupid companies make you slide your tandems at the GATE!!! Ft. Worth Kraft Foods, which is actually in Haslet makes you slide at the gate, as well as Americold in Ft. Worth.... another reason to slide your tandems is after you are loaded because a heavy load can actually collapse your trailer in the middle if you don't slide your tandems up!!!!

Most docks are old and weren't designed for 53' trailers in the first place. Half this shit is just messed up because the industry changed to larger trailers without making more room at docks. @snakeandnape9252
@snakeandnape9252 8 жыл бұрын
Weight distribution. You can only have so much weight on your trailers tires and so much weight on your tractor tires. Sometimes depending on your load and how much weight is in your trailer it doesn't get distributed easily so sometimes you could have too much weight on your trailer tires and not enough on your tractor tires or vice versa. So you slide your tandems or your fifth wheel depending on the situation and take the weight off your tractor tires (drives) or your trailer tires (tandems).

I grew up in the cab of a truck and on the deck of a spread axle covered wagon my father was a owner operator my brother was a owner operator they hauled Steel coils they have both passed away I became a owner operator and I have nobody teaching me these box trailers well van trailers and there sliding tandems I know what I grew up around I know flatbeds and steel coils but because I’m under two years on my cdl I can’t get those loads I have to take box trailers and they are different. I can chain and tarp as good as a 20 year flatbed driver but I’m learning the box trailers and anytime someone say hey you can make turns easier or you can move them to scale your load so it does piss me off to see someone struggle and other people just watching

Back in the day sliding tandems weren't a thing. U were dealt with the hand you were given. Pain in the ass to get around with a stationary tandem. Yea it helps to slide tandems when backing but that ain't the reason you slide em. It's for weight. Not maneuverability.

Could have gave the guy a hand just someone to say you clear or stop your gonna hit some people actually appreciate the help they say it takes ten years to actually know everything and I’ve heard driver’s say after 10 years they still was learning things these city’s where not built for how big the trucks and trailers have gotten and these old school drivers who have it figured out need to pass the knowledge to the next or we will all be none head truckers. Drivers need to stick together and watch out for one another and stop making fun of those who are learning

this is backing and have nothing to do with sliding tandems. you slide your tandem when you live load something heavy to make tour trailer more stable

it's a bitch to slide those tandems sometimes, sometimes they don't slide at all

It's either the guy's lazy or the tandoms won't unlock. Been there, done that.

Trailer is still just as long, slid forward or back. I have been driving a truck since 1980 and find it easier for me, in tight situations to have tandems at rear when backing.

Same here. At least I know where the rear of the trailer is and you don't have to worry about that extra swing in the back.

Im a rookie gents but i think the angle changes when tandems are moved...and it comes in handy when space is limited... just my two cents..God bless everyone out there

Tail swing is something I've gotten very used to and having the tandems slid forward helps to get into really tight spots.. gives more room in the front of the tractor which is where the problems can come in.. not enough space to get back in front of the trailer
