Gaza is Calling is about my first experience with heartbreak in friendship. I was 11 when I met this boy from Gaza. We were inseparable. With him I shared one of the deepest loves I’ve ever known, he grew up alongside me in a housing project in Toronto. And not even this love was a match for the violence we were up against; the one in our new home, the one that followed him from Gaza like a cold wind. In the end it was all the bloodshed between us that didn’t allow us to see each other without tears appearing, and one of the last notes he sent to me was about how we would continue on in another life. The string sample is the Arabian nostalgia that we share, the autotuned Arabic I sing is the balance we tried to reach being boys of cultural empires in a small hood, and the Oud is the instrument of our homelands, Sudan and Palestine. The directors did an amazing job! At the end the viewer realises that the boy is hallucinating being with his sister who he lost whilst we flashback to the childhood where the sister screams out and he relives the trauma and then lies down looking up and the shot from the childhood of the sister looking up at the sky is an amazing side to side comparison of how the sister had to be the carer for the brother when they survived and in the present he is the only one surviving and going through what his sister went through being the responsible figure i.e., he has no one to take care of him just like she had no one to take care of her but she had a brother to take care of whilst being a child herself. Abdul and Bella’s acting is impeccable.

This brought tears to my eyes. As a Palestinian living in the West Bank, we are constantly depicted as anything but normal human beings. We aren’t superheroes; we are regular people with regular emotions. You can't imagine how many times we cry ourselves to sleep, yet we feel an unrelenting need to appear strong, which is utterly draining. But what other choice do we have? Here, trauma is buried deep within us because life under occupation is traumatizing enough, and we simply don't have the time to address it. Telling indigenous people they didn't exist before they were recognised by Europeans as nation states is ridiculous. Even ancient Israel was a kingdom, not a country. And the ancient Israelites only dominated the other tribes for 200 years. Those who converted to Christianity and Islam remained in Palestine. 90% of the Palestinians descend from Jews who converted to Christianity and Islam. They never left the land. Meanwhile, the nation state of Israel was created illegally, even by twentieth century standards. The British had no legal basis under international law to hand Palestine away to an invader.
