I have a much loved Dan Electro that suffered a headstock break many years ago and was languishing in its case on the top of the wardrobe for years. I finally - and inspired by Ted managed to repair it. I glues it up, let it sit, the routed two channels on either side of the trussrod, then made inserts from Tasmanian Oak / Mountain Ash, and these just clicked into the routes. I shaped the inserts down to the neck and refinished using model aircraft satin lacquer, Now I have my guitar back and it's awesome. I'm so proud of myself, and have years of watching Ted's videos to thank. I'll buy some stickers for its case

Damn dude/dudette! That's a serious risk, and I'm so glad you pulled it off! I think of the repairs Ted does, and I'm kinda scared to attempt that work myself. I have an amazing repair luthier (I live in a big city), so thankfully I don't have to, but WTG! That takes guts and patience. Danelectros are a love 'em or hate 'em species, and I love 'em! Premier guitar/instrument “repairman”, a mathematician with a major in geometry, a mechanic, electrician, woodworker with a vast knowledge of woods used in instruments, a chemist who works with different adhesives and finishes all the while having to gauge and balance what they can do to the original finish ,a historian and more all combined with an eye toward the art of the instrument itself. To combine all of these , or better said , to coordinate them to work in harmony and achieve the desired end result is seemingly overwhelming but this man pulls it off time and again. True masters are few and far between and we’re fortunate we can pull up KZbin and watch this man work.

Hi Ted! You won’t have a ground loop in a passive circuit. You only see ground loops when there’s a difference in potential in active circuits. And the intermittent problem probably is related to using the chromed plate for ground. It works great until it doesn’t work.

Back in the early ‘80’s I owned a very similar Competition Mustang Bass, although it seemed to be decidedly actually quite more of a “British Racing Green” (I never opened it up, but I’ve owned a couple of “Sherwood Green” Fenders, and it wasn’t quite that!), but it had a matching painted cap, and the stripes were more of a crème yellow, matching the color of the words “Mustang Bass” on the headstock decal, and perhaps most curiously of all, it had the same non-contoured body of my “worth less” ‘66 Mustang bass, both of which basses possessed the rare mid ‘60’s “oval” (non floral) buttons, and the neck date was ‘68! I wish I still had it, if only to shield it from “the thousand natural shocks that (guitar) flesh is heir to”… I hope some bozo didn’t rout it for an EMG P/J rig! Thanks Ted, you ‘da man!

Thanks for the video and good luck with the new merching enterprise! As a bass palyer myself I'm always happy to see you work on one. *It's a nice direction to go if you're like me and have 8-string guitars. I even have a 10-string bass of a 34" scale maybe even 36.* The timing of bass really forces you to be patient. I remember when I made a recording about 14 or 15 years ago, and while all the guitar parts were obviously easy, timing the bass was extraordinarily challenging. The time signature phrasing gave me a newfound respect for bassists who are often unfairly regarded as failed guitarists. Bass is a ton of fun, but time signatures are no joke. Listeners might hear and see me shred through a bazillion notes and sweeps per second and are impressed, but I'm impressed by a bassist even if just playing a few notes is able to back me up! The timing is just absolutely critical and for me as a guitarist that likes anything with strings, a challenge.

Always a good day when you see a new one of Ted's videos as Recommended when you open up this app. BTW, I don't know if anyone in North America would know who I'm talking about but the Late Alan Lancaster of Status Quo played a Mustang Bass thru most of his long tenure with Status Quo, modding it along the way as he felt it needed it. Even in his last shows with Status Quo, before he became too ill with MS to do live work, he used the Mustang bass. I do hope Ted has talked to Davey about the sticker posting arrangements in Canada. (Davey's World of Fun Stuff on YoutTube).

Short scale basses are excellent instruments. They have their own sound that differs from the 34" scale basses. My basses are all short scale. A lot of the iconic rock songs of the 60s and early 70s were recorded with short scale basses. Re the Gretsch: That headstock turned out beautifully!

That bass riff at the 9:40-ish mark sounded like the bass riff on the opening to John Mayall's "California" from the "Turning Point." Whether you meant to or not, that's what it sounded like. I think that was Steve Thompson on bass for that album. It gets a little confusing because who didn't play with the Bluesbreakers at one time or another. John McVie, for instance, played bass and double bass before he went into obscurity, or something. Some fly-by-night garage band named Fleetwood something.

One thing that could contribute to "wonkiness" of the jack is that it appears the plating on the tip contact has worn away in the small contact area that the plug tip wipes against. The base metal under the plating then has a tendency to oxidize and cause poor electrical contact. Contact cleaner and scotchbrite may clean it up for a little while, but it will oxidize again and give intermittent noisiness. Then only true solution is to replace the jack.
