In Patty Hype, Spongebob's pretty patty business recieves 46853 customers. We know its this amount because in the end they say "all 46853 customers want their money back". This means at one point, the Bikini Bottom population was a very large city. Or at the very least it was close enough to other cities to create a population of 46853 customers. Btw a town can be very big yet considered "lame" by the standards of people like squidward

Me personally I beleive the reason why Bikini Bottom has such a very contrasting population count, is I think due to the fact that it is a tourism town, possibly even something like Radiator Springs being on a (used to be) main thoroughfare, and it could explain why Plankton is still _somehow_ in business, I mean sure he lives there, and sure he might not make money, but the thing is, he still has to pay property tax, utilities, and all of that other stuff he comes up with to steal the Krabby Patty formula. So if Bikini Bottom is a tourist town it would explain the difference between population between episodes, AND it would explain why there are all of these random other types of businesses, which are bascily tourist traps, and it would explain why Plankton wants to steal the Krabby Patty formula because his business relies on the seasonal tourist _tides._ well that's what I think Bikini Bottom is.
