Hoping you feel better. I first learned about gasifying in the 5th grade. Somewhere around 1955. The teacher put on a science demonstration to show that wood didn't actually burn, that it was the gas escaping that did. She put a pine knot in a coffee can that she had put a hole in the top of with a nail and put the can on a hot plate until it started to smoke from the hole then she lit the smoke with a match and it produced a continuous flame although the wood wasn't actually on fire. She also failed to advise the Principal of her experiment and someone pulled the fire alarm when the smelled the smoke so we got a recess while the fire department came to investigate the fire. Some things are just too good to forget.
@firewalker1372 Жыл бұрын
That pretty much goes for any material that burns, it’s off gassing. Smoke is just unburned fuel/off gas. Learned this many many years ago when starting my fire service classes. Little over 20 years ago, wow time flys huh 😂.
@keithyinger3326 Жыл бұрын
That's one memorable lesson lol. Another way to demonstrate that it's actually the smoke that's burning is with a candle. Let it burn for a few minutes and then blow it out. Hold your match a few inches above it in the stream of smoke that's coming off the wick. The smoke with light on fire and travel back down to the wick, relighting it. Kind of a fun trick but it shows that it's actually the smoke that's burning. Well actually it's vaporized wax in this case, but same idea. The wax itself or the wick itself doesn't actually burn. It just turns things into a vapor and that's what burns.
@AfterDark33 Жыл бұрын
This is actually one of the tests someone did to actually figure out combustion theory! Except instead they had originally put a lump of coal under a fire, and the gas lit on fire, which is actually what originally started the Town-gas industry where you have gas delivered to your home by pipes, it originally wasn't propane or natural gas, but coal gas!

@@jackmundo4043 Yeah I don't like the narcotics either. Morphine is fun and all, but yeah, I don't like the side effects. Same as Demoral, Oxy etc. The thing about migraines is: there's no real one cure for everyone. Everyone is different just like migraines. Sometimes mine start at the back, sometimes above my right ear, and sometimes behind and above my right eye. Always on the right though. They have greatly diminished since I left the high stress corporate job(s) though. One thing that bugs me about people talking about migraines: most aren't having a migraine, it's just a bad headache. If it was a migraine you wouldn't be out driving around on a sunny day, watching tv or playing a freaking video game. I had a buddy who would call in sick to work "due to migraines" and he'd be online playing a video game or watching tv. Dude a migraine feels like someone is driving a 12" spike through your head, you WON'T be outside, playing a video game or watching tv if you were having a migraine. I once shot a framing nail through my hand...it didn't hurt as much as a migraine.

One of my friends in France has a Ford Model A with a Danish (Skandinavisk Motor Co.) wood burning Gasogene. This was fitted to the Model A in 1939 in anticipation of fuel shortages during the imminent war. It is all still working and he fired it up for me (while it is heating to optimum temperature, you turn on a fan and light a gas burn off tube, which shoots out a 6 foot long blue/orange flame). It has a large cast iron condenser in front of the regular radiator to condense water vapour, steam and tar out of the gas to improve its flammability and to keep the engine internals cleaner. The Gasogene burner tank is mounted on the rear of the chassis.

Reproduction upper distributor shafts come in two styles - yours doesn't have a drilled hole to lubricate the upper shaft. The other does have a hole in it and a hole in the screw that holds down the distributor cam so that you can put a few drops of oil in the top as well as the existing oil hole for the lower shaft. It's a good investment and easy swap.

Rebuilt distributors for old Ford flat fours are insanely expensive even though there were millions of them built all throughout WWII. They were built to be rebuilt easily and cheaply but nowadays people think "1930s?! I've got gold! 10000% markup from new." It's insane. And the rebuild kits that have like two screws, washers, a bolt, a packet of cheap dielectric grease, a cheap wire and connector (not spliced together) and a cheap cork gasket are insanely expensive.

I'm not normally a commenter, but just in case this helps: Finding the triggers for migraines has been the best for me. Avoid certain food chemicals (like food dyes) for one type of M, which is easy; the other type results from a pinched nerve feeling at the base of my skull. Causes -- Too much muscle tension, wrong positioning for too long, eg looking up, keeping my right arm up on an armrest or typing too much, or sitting in a chair/ couch that "supports" my upper back. Been fighting nerve migraines for 10 years and if that sounds like you and you want to chat about treatments, let me know and we can go offline. 🤕 Otherwise, I love the vids and keep up the good work!

In the 90s when I was in college I was having terrific neck pain, which I experienced right before finals when I was bent over studying for hours at a time. I went to a chiropractor and all of the popping of joints etc. did nothing but aggravate my neck, but the other thing he did really worked. He had what looked like a normal-sized heating pad, which had weights in it so it laid on my neck securely. This pad sent mild shock waves through my neck muscles, and as it was on my neck I could feel my neck muscles tensing and releasing. He left this pad on my neck for about 15 minutes. As soon as he took it off I felt so much better with no neck pain at all. I had this problem one more time in college and the pad he used did the trick again.

Hey Mustie, i also get migraines and it sucks. I get them mostly when my blood sugar levels crash. But if you are getting migraines because of your neck its probably down to muscle tension. Make sure your not bruxing and clenching, especially at night and this can be down to things like drinking coffee in the evening or the old nightcap - alcohol is a psychoactive which can make us grind\clench. This overworks the muscles creating the tension. Our bodies are complex and so many people have issues, we don´t have balanced lives anymore! If you reckon the muscle tension is on the right track, it can also help to drink calming tea in the evening and moist hot compress on facial eck muscles, and hate to say it, but exercise too. Look into trigger therapy. Cheers!

Then a buddy of mine told me that I don't drink enough water, so I started drinking about a gallon of water in a twelve hour shift, my regular headaches went away and so did my migraines eventually. I would get one migraine a year and now i haven't had a migraine in about three to four years. I don't drink as much water as I use to but I still drink a fare amount every day. It sounds simple , but I went from every so often having to go into the hospital and be put onto an IV to where I am today . Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you. 17:29 tool tip: see how the wrenches are positioned? Kind of like a pair of pliers? When tightening two nuts like that, you can position the wrenches so you can work them like a pair of pliers. Then to loosen, you can spin the top one around so when you draw them together, it loosens the nuts. I used this all the time in cabinet making when I didn't have room to get my hands in on the wrenches, just get em close and squeeze.

There are photos on the internet that show the wood gassifiers being used during WW2, in Europe, where the gassifiers would be trailered behind gas vehicles. Whatever was in the little balls was supposed to flow throughout the cooling system and seal any holes. Can’t recall if it worked but I’m highly inclined to believe those balls are from a product like I used rather than acorns. I’ve seen a lot of old, oily acorns but have yet to see some that pliable.

Looked to me like that drive shaft in the block for the distributer was pretty worn out as well judging by the condition of the groove in it. Would probably be worth it to replace if it can be done without removing the head again. Love the vids.

Missed you Mustie. I got to 2 days out myself but was getting cold turkey. So I had to get my fix by watching old episodes of Mustie to tide me over. Glad you’re back. 👍🔧🇬🇧

Musty I'm sorry to hear that you suffer from migraines My wife does and a few other people that I know I was worried that something had happened to you I missed your videos and it was a Sunday morning tradition just like everybody else to wake up with a cup of coffee and see one of your videos to set and watch I've missed that I hope you get better and I hope the chiropractor is able to correct the problem thank you for the video and showing us what an old engine actually looks like and the simplicity of the way they were built thank you very much

Sorry you're having trouble with your health. I'll keep good thoughts for you and your chiropractor. I remember my mom talking about the old Model A saying "take-it-apart, take-it-apart, take-it-apart" when it idled. Now I've heard it with my own ears. I've enjoyed these old car projects. My first car was a 1929 Ford Tudor that I bought for $60 when I was 15. I never got it running--didn't know much, but I sold it for $120 the next year. Wish I could have kept it somehow, but of course there was no way for that to happen in the chaos of life.

Noticed something on your bench, a can of, "Fluid film" That crap about killed me... Never spray throttle cables with it in the winter... Yes it will freeze them. I bought it at the Alaska State Fair before it was in stores,,, four wheeler, sleds, everything I used it on froze up while using it... Love your videos, watch everyone....

Say Mustie1, if it's any help to you -- I have problems with occasional pinched nerves on the sides of the back of my neck. I bought a neck collar with an ice strip inside. I freeze the thing, then wrap it around my neck. It velcro's together in the front. It can be worn under a shirt. The idea is that the cold diminishes the pain in that area. Works quite well. As for your comment about battery versus electric vehicles, I think hybrid electric is the workable solution for the foreseeable future. Aside from very good gas mileage, the other big plus with hybrids is that they can recharge themselves while in use. No mandatory plug-in. The all-electric-hysteria crowd always conveniently forgets that we're going to be stuck with tons of spent batteries in another fifteen years that are past their useful & rebuilt lives. There's also the extra load on our community power grids to consider. The only plus side there is that we'll be (at last) forced to build small, local saline thorium nuclear powerplants -- which are already proving safe and self-regulating; a real-world solution to a whole lot of power problems.

Hey Darren. I'm not going to give you a cure for your migraines, because the cause and recovery for each person is different. I'm just going to wish you all the very best in finding a cure that works for you. Love this Ford resto. There's so many things I've taken away from your videos that have helped me no end on different projects and my welding techniques. Look forward to more good vids and I'm enjoying exploring your past ones.
