How does it feel to replace the best drummer alive? Nothing. It feels like nothing. You do your own thing and make your own bubble. Hutch, more power to you. Drive this your own way. You're darn good.

Missing Darren and Roy like many, but one observation: This time must be an absolute mind trip for Paul (singer) - He's now surrounded by 3 musicians each representing different decades in his musical evolution, with fate somehow setting them all on a collision course to perform together. And they sound WAYYY tighter than I was bracing for! -- Faith restored for Play Dead Live this fall.

Going to the STL show & can't say I've ever been this excited for a concert. This album is just...come. On. Darren will be missed but anyone willing to fill those shoes deserves a chance to be heard. Also, Paul's dance moves. They deserve my attention as well.

I have been a huge fan from the very start. I saw them live in '04, '07, '16 and yesterday (8-29-'17) in Utrecht, The Netherlands. I was quite disappointed when Darren left and I was afraid yesterday's show would disappoint. But it really was beyond expectations: truly AMAZING!! They played with so much energy! I believe the show was even better than the one I saw in '16 (with Darren and Roy). Hutch really surprised me, he played with so much energy and passion. He played some mind-blowing energetic fills. Het totally rocked it! I think he's the perfect match. As a true fan I am now convinced this band will survive.
@ThePlagueGameing7 жыл бұрын
the band for sure will survive. hutch and paul know each other very well and trust me, he wouldn't be there if paul thought for one second that he couldn't cut it. listen to some early Earthsuit. it really is mutemath as an infant, IMO. have a great day!

interesting observation. he for sure will use both cymbals a lot for accents. darren only ever had one i believe. he also doesn't use any tape for dampening that i can see. snare is alot crisper sounding because of that plus more than likely a different mic and eq..

I saw them live on 29th of August in Utrecht, the Netherlands. And they were marvelous! Even without Darren 'I-am-a-living-metronome' King they simply raised the roof! David “Hutch” Hutchison drummed the living daylights out of any Mutemath-song and didn't cover his appreciation for the art of drums!

This reminds me of when Josh Klinghoffer replaced John Frusciante in RHCP. You can't really replace someone no matter how good you are. You just need to be as good as you can be, try to stay true enough to the original sound, at the same time bringing your own unique talents and style to the music. If you think about the evolution of this band and how they pretty much sound different on every album, this is just the next step. I am hoping we see new material in 2020.

There's a tightness that's missing here. Whether or not Hutch and Paul have played together in the past it'll still take time for all 4 guys to mesh together and perfect their sound. Which I'm sure will get better and better as the tour progresses. Hutch seems to be a pretty competent drummer. Slick fills. Just lacks that certain groove and crispness in the pocket that Darren had. Not to mention the energy. That being said, they sound as good as they can given the circumstances and short notice. Love this live version of the song. Been a die hard fan since the beginning. Can't wait to see the whole show.
@ThePlagueGameing7 жыл бұрын
now that's a good solid comment. listen too some early Earthsuit. it was mutemath as a baby!.
@jpoprock7 жыл бұрын
I think the lack of "tightness" you're hearing is in the drum sound not the playing. Hutch doesn't "tape" his drum heads like Darren did (which deadens them). Hutch has a much more lively drum sound, where Darren had a really "tight" sound... which is part of what made him so unique. I'll be anxious to hear how the old songs sound. MM is still able to function but losing Darren was more than losing one of the worlds best drummers... but a front man as well. It's going to be a rough road for MM I think.

From the most recent interview, Hutch literally just decided to get back into music and performing at the same time Paul realized he needed to find a drummer. There is good chance he sticks around especially if everything progress. Paul has no desire to quit music so I dont think this is the end, just a new era. Check the interview on the side bar from Jorm Kaat
