Interesting memories. Where did you live in Papeete? I lived there for a few years in the early 2000’s when the replica of Cooks barque, the Endeavour, paid a visit. It anchored in Matavai Bay and the capt was welcomed ashore on the shoulders of Tahitians dressed traditionally. The scene in the film, when the Bounty anchored in the bay, was exactly as I recall the Endeavour doing. Frame the ship and you were back in 1788. A year later I stumbled onto a gathering at Pt Venus of descendants of the mutineers including the Polynesians who went to Pitcairn, as they commemorated the mutiny and unveiled a black basalt rock with the images of Christian and Maimiti. All around were tables set up with their genealogy going back to Pitcairn and beyond. Although the character of Bligh has been better researched and rehabilitated today, these descendants were not complimentary about “that (enter expletive) Bligh.”

I can see why this was a Best Picture nominee.This is a beautiful production that still looks as good today as the day it was filmed(? a restoration). Like many films based on historical events, it does play a bit loose with the facts though. In reality, Bligh and Christian had been good friends for years before setting out on their ill fated voyage. Despite the Royal Navy's finding that Bligh's treatment of his crew likely contributed to the mutiny, it now seems that he was one of the more leniant disciplinarians among his RN contemporaries. The film's ending might be where most of the fiction took place. Yes, the Bounty was set on fire, but it seems it was more a collective decision by the mutineers in order not to 'advertise' their location to any passing British ships as well as to prevent any mutineers from leaving the island. And, no, Christian did not die from burns he sustained in the fire...it seems he lived, at least for a few years more. Suffering from alleged bouts of 'melancholia' (depression), he seems to have led an increasingly reclusive existence and abdicated his leadership of the group. Not surprisingly, the mutineers eventually built a still and most of them and their Tahitian wives spent their days in a drunken stupor. The male Tahitians who accompanied them became increasingly resentful of having to do the bulk of the manual labour, and in 1793, they planned a massacre of all the mutineers. It was during this attempted massacre that Christian lost his life, either hacked to death or shot, depending on sources. As for most of the remaining mutineers, things didn't get much better. Their numbers dwindled by a trifecta of murder, possible suicide and disease. Eventually, there were only three of the original nine mutineers remaining, Christian's friend and fellow officer Ned Young, John Adams and Matthew Quintal. At some point, Quintal, in a drunken rage, threatened to kill everyone in the community. In response, Young and Adams hacked him to death. Young eventually died from an asthma attack in 1800, and Adams, the last surviving mutineer, died in 1829. Pitcairn Island's largest community, Adamstown, is named after him. For years, the island has been desparate to attract new residents to reverse a downward population spiral, and as of 2021, had a total of only 47 residents...more than half of whom can still trace their ancestry back to those original mutineers and Tahitians. As for Captain William Bligh, mutiny seems to have followed him like a dark cloud wherever he went. In 1797, he was again in command of another RN vessel, HMS Director, that was involved in a larger scale mutiny involving several other Royal Navy ships. It should be noted that he also went on to distinguish himself, serving with Admiral Nelson in battle. Then, in 1806, as Governor of New South Wales, you guessed it, he was at the epicentre of yet another mutiny, this time by settlers, which came to be known as the 'Rum Rebellion'. He died in London in 1817. As a side note, a faithful reproduction of HMS Bounty was built in Nova Scotia for this 1962 film. This beautiful ship sailed for 50 years, but unfortunately got caught up in Hurricane Sandy and sank in heavy swells off the coast of North Carolina in 2012. Sadly, two of that Bounty's crew, the captain and a female crew member, perished in the sinking. Ironically, that crew member's name was Claudene Christian, a direct descendent of Fletcher Christian.

The story is not an accurate depiction of Bligh and recent research comes to that conclusion. While the Bounty was destroyed, Christian's death did not occur at the same time. However the book written by James Norman Hall is a very good read and an even better film in this rendering.

Things have not changed, they make films about aliens now because aliens exist. So its kind of a soft disclosure taking place.

During the 1970s / 80s, I used to work on passenger liners between Europe & Australia via Panama. We often stopped at Tahiti, and once when on a Soviet ship we stopped at Pitcairn Island. This movie shot on location, brought back memories. I have photos taken with the Tahitian beauties with flowers in their hair and coconut shells for bra cups.

never could realize to visit Pitcairn

Hi, I just saw your reply. Yes, I did several northbound voyages, mostly on Ellinis, and a couple on Australis. I was working in the duty free shops onboard. The visit to Pitcairn though was on Soviet ship, Maxim Gorkiy, on which I was a photographer. She was on a world cruise under German charter. This particular cruise was traveling the east to west direction, and Pitcairn was the first stop in the South Pacific a few days after rounding Cape Horn. No matter whether Chandris or the Soviet ships, all were very happy days.

@@goognamgoognw6637 Unfortunately not an accurate portrayal of true events, Captain Bligh was no more of a tyrant than was normal at those times, and possibly one of the greatest sailors to to ever sale the seas.

@@arthuroldale-ki2ev Okay but as a fictional story the character of Bligh in the story is despicable. That, there is no doubt about.

@@goognamgoognw6637 A lot of this is fiction to make it sell in the movies Fletcher Christian didn't die this way , they aren't even sure how he died or even if he did die on the Island ? Bligh reached England first bad mouthed even the ones who didn't mutiny > looked bad on him that so few crew took his ship ( the only HMS ship ever to Mutiny) British navy hunted the mutineers with a vengeance several were even taken back and hung in Portsmouth Harbor ...but after more witnesses reached England conflicting Bligh's story, the British Government didn't really want to continue the hunt for the Mutineers.

Amazing film in every way, music was so fine and fitting, special effects were astounding - that storm was unbelievable. Brando was great as usual, Harris held his own well in this early role, and Trevor Howard - just fantastic.

Excellent movie classific If a little inaccurate and light on detail for example Christian did not die so soon after reaching Pitcairn. He fathered a number of children on the island whose descendants can be found there to this day. Personally I preferred the later version mainly due to Anthony Hopkins’ performance as Captain Bligh and its portrayal of his survival in the launch and deliverance on reaching the Dutch colonies.

Howard is exceptional and steals every scene . Rare that Brando is left in the shadows, but for all his preening, posing and obvious screen presence, he simply doesn't come close to Howard in terms of performance.. Brilliant film .. So many faces and many of them very young and going on to have great careers
@quemades17 күн бұрын
I disagree. I bet you are English. Howard is great sure, but all he has to express and transmit is being obnoxious (easy for the English), whereas the role of Christian is far more complex, with emotional depth. Of course Brando pulled it off, masterfully. He was the star of this movie, not Howard, and you can tell just by reading the effusive comments here, and the fact that it stands the test of time. Fantastic directing and photography too. Brando has all the best scenes anyway, and the closing scene belongs to him and him alone. The ladies weep for Christian, not Bligh. When they remember the film, they remember Brando, an American who plays an English gentleman struggling between a high sense of morality, loyalty to the English crown, love, honour and….. phew, how could Bligh upstage such a performance? Watch it again without silly prejudice.
