Inadvertent cellaring...Cleaning my workbench I found an old margarine tub with an aromatic blend I hand mixed...in 1987. It was a little dry so I re-hydrated it and it smoked very nicely. Good flavor to be sure, but I don't know that I would say it was any better than before it fell behind the toolbox. At least I can say I've smoked 31 year old tobacco. (For any Virginians out there, it was mixed at the "Ye Olde Tobacconist Shoppe" that used to be in Busch Gardens, Williamsburg). Keep up the great videos, brother.

When tobacco dries (out of case), all processes stop. It must retain moisture to "age". What you had was "old" tobacco.

I am a big fan of cellaring, but sadly some of my favorites are flake tobacco's that come in square tins. The square tins tend to be very finicky about maintaining their seal. I would recommend going ahead and popping the seal on these, and dropping them into an appropriate sized mason jar to advance the aging process. I've had too many square tins compromised in the past, to take any chances. Another great video Chris!

I recently found a tin of Old Dark Fired at a tobacconist in Baton Rouge, LA. It had almost 4 years of age on it. When I got back to Texas and opened it, the scent of fermentation was overpowering. There was so much plume on this tobacco, (loupe verified, not mold!). Amazing.

You're right on the spot here. When years ago I first learned from American YT pipe presenters about cellaring (which doesn't seem to be a common practice over here in Europe), I was sceptical, to say the least. But as soon as I'd tried it, my doubts vanished. Cellaring really does make a difference, especially to English blends. Now I always let a few tins of my favourite tobaccos sit for 2-3 years before popping them.

Sounds like you got lucky on getting aged tins. I made a little trip to a nearby cigar/pipe shop yesterday and they had a large stock of mcclelland tins and I picked up 8 of my favorite tins and a couple cigars to try. A couple were dingy from the cigar smoke- a good sign. They had price stickers over the dates so I couldn't tell the age in the store, after getting home and doing some peeling I was delighted, a few of the oldest ones were St. James Woods from 2011 and Bombay Court from 09' . They had a bunch more left that had gotten dingy. I will be going back soon, they even gave me a 10% discount for showing my pipe club card.

Dear Chris, thank you for sharing this interesting experience! I myself came recently about a tin of Wellauer's Best (a tobacco that I haven't smoked so far) at my little newspaper and tobacco shop round the corner. It still has a price and tax label in Deutsche Mark, therefore it is at least from 2001, before the Euro was introduced. I wonder how it has developed, and I will buy me a new tin to compare it, just for curiousity. Let's see! Best regards from Munich, Peter

With the deeming regulations going into more effect in the future I am trying to aquire & cellar more and more tobacco that I know is a favorite of mine and may be "on the chopping block." Therefore if the company decides it's not worth the cost of the FDA testing and fees and decides not to produce the tobacco any more, I'll have some to smoke if it doesn't make it back to the shelves.

I love smoking my pipe using the breathe method (took me a while to get there...) to a level where it is just going out: the taste is so enhanced that it is unbelievable. Dear Muttonchop do you think as well as age the exposure to air makes a difference as the tobacco tins you received must initially been vacuum sealed or do you think they just settle and mature with age as we all do? PS I'm on my first tin of early morning pipe and loving it. For me it's a all day smoke. Please let me know your thoughts.

Just noticed that you have different color eyes. Or do you? Do you have hetrochromia or is it the camera and lightning that makes them appear different colors? Just curious. Also good info about getting tobacco on sale that turned out to be excess stock and you got aged tobacco at a sale price, so it worked out in your favor,must be good karma or something. I wonder how often that happens and if some tins age better than others due to different shapes,lids,top sheets,etc.? Another good video!

80brax04 - just the lighting, both my eyes are blue. I have heard that round tins seem to keep their integrity better then square or rectangular shaped tins, meaning square and rectangular tins can pop their seals on their own, and if they are in your cellar you could end up with very dry tobacco after 5 years or so. 👍👍👍

Hi friend!!! Excelent video. I want you to know that recently (about two weeks ago), we opened a 1980 Dunhill Standard Mixture tin (with my fellas of Buenos Aires Pipe Club), and it was incredible. it was like an English Blend but much more sweet. (i didn't try a recent made blend tin to compare but i don't think a fresh one could overcome that one). So, best regards and to your next video!!!!

I am wanting to buy a tin of tobacco to cellar until my 50th birthday, which is 6 years from now. I want it to be something that I have never smoked before and will not smoke until that day. I am buying a pipe that I will put away until then also. I smoke mostly Dunhill and Frog Mortons blends. Could you suggest a good tobacco to buy for that?

Great info, as always Chris. My question is slightly off topic, but I just opened a tin of Peterson's Irish Whiskey and noticed what I felt was fairly intense pepper. It wasn't until I read a few reviews that I discovered it contained Perique which was not mentioned on the tin nor on the Peterson website. Is that typical? I would think it would be indicated in the blend description. Any thoughts on that?

It might be that, since Dunhill exited the market, a lot of old hoarded stocks are entering the market as no fresh product is being made anymore. In Europe we started running out of Dunhill blends, I had to hunt for early morning to get a 50g tin. It may be my last one 😢 I took a lesson out of your video and started stocking up my cellar too. I will have to ration me and my pipe and savour it as long as I can before they make pipe smoking a capital felony (I am sure hard drugs will be legal though, so many damn politicians are addicts).

Thanks Chris for sharing, one is on the safe side buying tinned tobaccos and not to worry about dryness, yet have possibility to get already aged tobacco at no extra tax, now one thing on this cellaring, my understanding is that only virginia forward blends benefit from cellaring, how bout blends which are composed mostly of burleys?Greets, Paul
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 7 жыл бұрын
Paul The Scandinavian - I think all blends even Aromatic blends and Burley blends benefit from Cellaring, the more time a blend spends Cellaring the longer the component tobaccos have time to combine flavors, which creates a more arch and mellow blend. 👍👍👍

Great video, really useful information. Unfortunately due to finances I mostly have to buy in bulk , How ever I was able to buy 3 tins of Plum Pudding recently because Pipes and cigars was having a sell , buy 2 get one free. This is the only tobacco I own in a tin. So here is my question. How do you Cellar bulk tobacco, and is it ok to leave tinned tobacco in the tin for cellaring or should I put it in ball jars. or vacuum sealed bags? Thank you . Brian
@MuttnchopPiper

flitdek - I use larger canning jars for my bulk tobacco, and I leave the tins alone, they are vacuumed sealed should last for years, but, if I do open a tin, I then put it in a canning jar. 👍👍👍

This is my first comment on any of your videos, and first of all I should say thank you. I've learned a lot from your videos, and enjoy watching them! But I do have a specific question regarding cellaring- After you have relocated tobacco from it's tin/pouch to a jar, is there any rhyme or reason as to how many times that jar should then be reopened and smoked out of. Does frequent opening of a jar to fill a bowl from time to time have an effect on that tobacco, or does it then reseal and preserve itself in-between smokes? I don't smoke terribly often, but I have started a collection of about 10-15 different tobaccos and I am developing my taste. I want to make sure that I am not opening too many and/or not smoking it quick enough and end up ruining it, but I am also anxious to try what I have! Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
@MuttnchopPiper

Anthony Decker - Great Question. I have about 75 canning jars of tobacco, and I dip into them periodically, after a year and a half whenever I open a jar to dip into it, the tobacco still has moisture, not a lot mind you but enough to keep it fresh. After you open the canning jar then close it again it takes about 2 days for the seal to reform, but it does reform keeping your tobacco fresh, so I say sample away my fried, it should be fine. 👍👍👍

Another useful video thanks a lot sir,, What do you recommend to age tobacco in an opened tin? Im currently using plastic wrap between the lid and the tin and tape the edge of the wrap to reseal it, what do you think about that method? PS: I dont use jars because i dont have that much place

Cihan Bozanoglu if I can still help after 7 months, I would recommend getting one big Mason jar and throwing the tins in there, won't take up to much space, but might mix the flavors a tiny bit

Nice clip Chris,been cellaring bulks for years. Mason jars are excelent for that purpose. EMP is good blend just too mild to my taste. Great info as always sir!! Aging some tobacco is definitely something I want to try. Does it matter if the tobacco is an aromatic or not? Just curious if there were any types of tobacco that doesn't cellar well.
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 7 жыл бұрын
Christopher Watt - that's the one Aromatics, all tobacco will age some better then others, Virginia's are the best because of all the sugar contained in the leaf, Aromatics the worse because of all the casing added, but like I said, the longer the tobacco is cellared the longer the individual tobacco components have a chance for flavor transfer to the other components, resulting in a smoother, more flavorful smoke. 😃😃😃

So I live in the hellish environment of Arizona. My problem is when I cellar my tobacco it tends to be bone dry in 2-3 years. I store all my tobacco inside my house in a dark box but still have this issue. My house is usually 78-79 degrees. I thought about adding some moisture to the tobacco before I cellar them, perhaps that will fix the issue? I know many pipe smokers say to NEVER add moisture to the tobacco before cellaring, but most of those people who give such advice live in colder and more humid climates. Do you think I should add a few Boveda packets with my tobacco then transfer the slightly more moist tobacco to a jar for cellaring?
