The Government of Rwanda received financing from the African Development Bank toward the cost of the Muvumba Multipurpose Water Resources Development Program (MMWRDP) in a loan agreement of EURO 121.502 Million. Through Rwanda Water Resources Board, the program is being implemented in Nyagatare District.
The program objective is to improve water availability, provide energy, food and nutrition security by harnessing water resources for irrigation, domestic and livestock uses and hydropower generation. Nyagatare District is the intervention area of the Program.
Muvumba Multipurpose Dam under construction is a 39 m high dam that will impounds 55 million cubic meter of water in Karama, Gatunda and Rukomo sectors. In addition to other uses, the water will be used for irrigation of 9,000 ha as well as livestock watering. The reservoir will also supply 50,000 m3/day water for domestic water use. The water released for water supply and environmental flow shall also generate electricity with annual energy of 6,939 MWh through two turbines of 1 MW (2X500KW) installed capacity.
