In 1991 German duo Jam El Mar and Mark Spoon started a project which they called Jam & Spoon. During the years they released tracks such as “Stella”, “Find Me”, “Angel”, “Kaleidoscope Skies”, “Follow Me”, “Be Angeled” and many others. But their biggest commercial succes came in the year 1993 when they released the track “Right In The Night”, which features the beautiful vocals from Plavka.
For this interview I sat down with Rolf Ellmer a.k.a. Jam El Mar to ask him about the story behind “Right In The Night” and more!
Enjoy and thanks for watching!

It's 1999, I'm 17 and living for my two last years of Bac (Abitur) in Berlin. I'm in an internet cafe, and I hear that sound. I ask the tenant what music it is, but it was on the radio and he didn't know. Fastforward like 10 years, and despite my best efforts, and growing knowledge of electronic music, I still can't find that sound I loved at the time. Then I talk about that experience with an older collegue, who knows his stuff in early electronic music. I start singing the melody, and instantly he tells me it's Right In The Night by Jam & Spoon. And I'm like "what, but I know that band, how did I missed this...". I love how your channel is bringing back so much memories, thanx a lot :)

I only discovered this song about 2 years ago during quarantine, and was instantly hooked. Absolutely love this song and still listen to it regularly. What shocked me the most was the fact that it was released in 1993! The sound quality is amazing, and I would have guessed it was from 1998/99. Excellent track.

One of my favorite J & S tunes of all-time. I first heard it in 1995 or 1996 at a store in the U.S. where I worked when a sales guy who also worked there in the Electronics department played a cassette recording of the tune to show the quality of the stereos to the customers. I have had the pleasure to meet Plavka in the U.S. and hear her perform this classic, live. Great interview. It's always fun to hear Rolf's stories and experiences. Thank you, Twaan for this interview.

What set J&S apart from others is that you didn't have to be into trance to like them. The production, the groove, the depth etc were so well crafted that the genre didn't matter. A lot of their tracks are huge classics and it's well deserved.

She also sang on R.H.C fever called love I recorded most of it all on to a TDK sa-x and we played it all night. Dance 2 Trance were the same I was so much into it all back then i was only 19 even today a lot of music good tracks etc never get known go under the radar lost in the saturated market of among none dance music etc etc

Thank you! And he’s telling what he did use for the guitar actually in this one. Plus in my previous interviews with Jam El Mar you will hear what kind of equipment he did use. I’m not a producer myself so I don’t have a lot of knowledge about the more technical part of the production, so that’s why I never ask too much in depth questions about the producing part, simply because I don’t think I should ask about things I don’t have the knowledge about 😉 I started this series because I’m interested in hearing the stories behind the tracks. So that’s why ☺️

Great track.Can we have some more tech details what synths and presets were used in productions of artists interviewed?
@muzikxpress
@muzikxpress 23 күн бұрын
Well, I'm not a producer myself so my technical knowledge about equipment etc etc is very, very limited. There's other channels that really go in-depth about the actual production and all the technical details. However, I always try to ask which equipment was used and sometimes producers share a bit more as well. But I don't really feel like going more in-depth about it, simply because I don't have enough knowledge about it. Plus I started Muzikxpress, because I'm trying to find out about the stories behind the tracks I grew up with. I think 80 or 90% of the viewers aren't producers, so I don't want to make it all too technical either. I'll leave that up to the channels who focus on the actual production of tracks, with my very basic knowledge I just don't really think I should ask questions about things I don't know anything about. I'm not comfortable with that ;-) Hope you understand! :)

Well, there's always like 5 or 6 questions that are (almost) the same..... I mean, we want to know the story behind the track right? ;-) But the answers are always different. And not sure if you noticed it, but there are always specific questions that are focussed on the track I'm talking about or about the artist itself. I do spend a lot of time on research and preparing these interviews. But feel free to send me a bunch of suggestions for questions I can ask for future interviews. Keep in mind the focus is to find out about the story behind the track ;-) Looking forward to your answer and suggestions! :)

Not anytime soon, but for sure on my wish list. I don’t have time or a travel budget at the moment for trips abroad. My schedule is completely full for the next 4 - 5 months. Hopefully one day, but I first need to save for new trips.

You mentioned Groove Coverage here. How about an interview with them with the story behind "God Is a Girl" for example?

Maybe one day, but I have such a long waiting list for now that I don't add new people to it. There's a lot of interviews lined up for 2023 already, plus right now I simply don't have any travel budget left for trips abroad. So for now I can only do interviews with people who live nearby or with artists that visit The Netherlands. I don't think I've ever seen Groove Coverage performing in The Netherlands though..... Maybe one day, but for now I don't see it happen any time soon. My main focus (there's always exceptions of course) I focus more on tracks from the 80s / 90s. Just being honest! This is just a hobby for me and my time and travel budget are limited.

@@muzikxpress maybe because Hands Up/Dancecore was never very popular type of music in Holland. The only Dutch Hands Up producer I know is Danceboy(Silver Nikan)
