Ive always just hacksawed them off a little long, rough faced it, then dialed it in. Parting off has always been a little scary for me, shellshocked i guess.😂 Nothing like a broken parting blade to keep you on your toes. But you could build a cathead to use in the steady rest with 4 adjuster screws. Then dialing in is just like using a 4 jaw and outboard spider. Light cuts are a must here though. Also feed in about 95% of the thread depth with the compound then feed straight in with the crossslide. That will turn your cutting tool into a form tool and the threads will be near polished when done.
