Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) is the BEST! I had to say goodbye to my dog there and they made the experience as peaceful as possible. Before he passed I took him there one time and was able to watch my dog get an X-ray…he was very uncomfortable at first, then once he saw me he relaxed and let them take several X-rays with ease. The vibe in there is so calming and peaceful. It was unlike any experience I’ve ever had at the vet. Highly recommend. A big thanks to VEG in San Ramon, CA. 🙏🏻❤️

Me too. I wish Joel didn't say there was only one use for the muzzle. If I crate the dog for 2hrs in the day when I go out he will often eat the bed (only 10 months old).

@@carold7713perhaps you are unaware but it is dangerous to put a muzzle on your dog when you are not going to be there supervising. Dogs have hung themselves with a muzzle... Really would hate for something to happen while you were gone.
@carold7713 Жыл бұрын
@pittymama4500 yes very aware of the risks. I have a choice (while I deal with the root cause of the bed chewing) to put the crate with nothing on the bottom (I don't think being on the wire of the crate is a good option) or have him operated again for a bowel obstruction after consuming the bed. I chose the muzzle with a bed. He just chills and sleeps. Sometimes I need to leave him for 2hrs once a week for my own medical treatment. It isn't ideal. If you know of a non chewable bed base for a Dobe please let me know, or another solution (other than get someone around to sit with him) I would really appreciate your input.

@@carold7713check out peach on a leash drop it video for the walks. Full GSD drops a whole hot dog in tact. I know there is a chew resistant bed, will have to see if I can find it. Check out Susan Garrett who had a dog that chewed beds because she uses a lot of dog beds all over the house. We use an actual baby crib mattress - waterproof, can wash the crib sheets, less likely to destroy it (although my stepdaughter's Rottweiler did chew a hole in one), compared to the cheap dog beds that get destroyed in the wash after the first wash. K9 Ballistics I guess has a non-destructable dog bed. Hope that helps.

So just regarding the question in Luke Evans program AKA "The farm" on KZbin. Luke is a legitimate good trainer and is retired special forces and pretty much fits the bill when it comes to those type of guys but he's found his passion in dogs and is making things happen running a pack of all rescue dogs that were formerly behavior modification cases and it is truly unique because these dogs that used to viciously fight each other are all running around they even have a dingo in the mix. But if you want to know what a smooth-running pack of dogs looks like just go check out the farm and you'll see one.

Re: Luke Evans ("The Farm" on KZbin)- I follow him for his common sense approach to training. Another head halter fan. He's a veteran of the Australian special forces and credits dogs with helping him with reintegration to civilian life. He and his wife and three kids live on 30 acres in rural Australia, formerly operated "farm trip' style dog daycare in addition to training. During covid lockdowns they were forced closed and fostered/rehabbed big, aggressive dogs from local shelter sentenced by council to euthanasia.They foster failed quite a few (Ithink they have 20 now?). Somewhere along the Asher House lines, they now operate more dog sanctuary style farm. Most, not all, videos are feel good focused unless you are a member then you get access to long intensive training videos. Joel would get a feeling for his training style just watching his interaction with his pack of 20.

Crazy! We are living in a time where people react to bad actors (someone who lights up a dog with a e-collar when they are being dog aggressive) and then decide on a blanket solution like force free which gets traction because it avoids the first issue. Meanwhile the solution causes more harm in the long run. This is happening everywhere in culture. People have lost the ability to think critically and they have messed up hierarchy of values (people do have more inherent value than animals 100%). Thank you for having this conversation.

I totally agree with Joel’s parenting methods and love how supportive he is of his wife. Mothers intuitively know what they need to do to comfort their baby and when the dad steps in trying to discipline or use operant conditioning tactics on a young one it causes tension in the marriage and can be very detrimental for the child. Not to get too personal but I’ve tried both methods - first one was all by the book put the baby in a crib, cry it out, formula fed etc. and the other was nursed from birth until toddlerhood, co slept, never had a bottle, a crib or bassinet, he never cried because I was so in tune and literally had the baby in my arms or in a sling 24/7. Both methods were equally difficult in their own ways but the outcome is significantly different. One child has debilitating anxiety, a few minor health issues and is a somewhat defiant- there’s a night and day difference between the two with the other being so emotionally stable, cooperative and healthy. I love them both so much but there is a stark difference with bonding and behavior as they age/babies I truly believe from experience that kids need that nurturing that mothers do instinctively and that most discipline is detrimental to a baby. Until age 4 or 5 they need to know they have unlimited love, comfort and food. At about age 4 the other part of their brain is developed enough to reason and understand but before that nurture nurture nurture and let the momma take the lead. That’s just my two cents, everyone should parent the way the want.

On the subject of best way for dogs to meet; a dog park, which everyone seems to bash, is basically the only place this is possible for some peoples dogs to meet another as you describe. Just as long as they are responsible, which would intern require them to have some knowledge which is where trainers like you are a HUGE benefit. They just have to seek it. Personally I've never taken either of my dogs to a trainer. Ive always watched my dogs and if i didnt like the situation I'd call them away from it or go get them. I have had to get in the middle of situations to help some owners. A lot of it is basically what you said and how raising kids and dogs is similar when fixing poor behavior.

Sorry for posting multiple comments. My dobie cant use a gentle leader because it messed up his spine. He couldn't move or even eat for several days after and a $600 vet bill later and picking my vets brain about it, the gentle leader is a no no for him. I use a prong collar. My dobie has a few issues that limit where he can go and who he can interact with. I love your methods, watch all your videos and I really like that you understand that dogs are capable of just being kind of jerky sometimes and enjoy the fight. One of the major issues my dog has, that really compound the problem, is that no matter how much work we do, it doesn't really stick. Every. Single. Day. We have to go through the SAME thing. I'll get it through his head today that there's no flying through the door, and then tmrw he's flying through the door again. Pulling like a sled dog on the prong collar. Not caring that Im on the other end of his leash. His intensity with his prey drive is insane. It doesnt matter how much successful work we did yesterday. Today he'll go nuts seeing a cat as if hes never had a minute of training. It's very frustrating. I'm actually going to email you about it tonight. I'm wondering what to do with a dog like this. Hes an intact dobie around 80lbs. Hes bitten a person before and I actually have experience training and rehabbing dogs and have no problem being the boss with dogs. Ive even broken up dog fights between several large dogs several times, when humans are afraid to intervene. But my dog that Ive had for almost a year now, I need help with. Idk if Im just missing a split second critical correction moment or if he's leash reactive, or if his brain isn't right in some way Im not familiar with. But something's up with my dog that Im just struggling to figure out.

When the situation improved, some Hawaiians asked for tourists to return because their economy is heavily dependent on tourism.

One of my Tibetan Mastiff's lives for routine. She will take herself to her crate and wait if I'm late telling her to go to bed, for each bed time across the day. Similarly she will be by the front window or front door nosing the door key to indicate that it's walk time, if I'm late. Our rule is dogs come inside at 21:00 and more often than not Tora comes trotting in as soon as I open the door, no command needed. She lives for routine! Conversely, routine change stresses her out. If I, or my family randomly just go out, outside of our normal routine, and she's in her crate, she'll try and escape and / or pull the blanket in through the bars, or throw her water bowl about. No such issues when we go out in our normal routine. She doesn't have separation anxiety, she has routine change anxiety, which manifests most strongly when left alone. She is a (beautiful) weirdo!

Best podcast yet!!! Super thought provoking 🤔and entertaining 😁. The force-free folks deny reality - period. A balanced, truth-seeking person should be able to engage with any person or information & be transparent about their own agenda or views (& results 😉). If that’s not the case, they aren’t being truthful with themselves or others, which makes meaningful sharing of knowledge, skills & results to learn the truth together unlikely to happen. I support Dog Daddy - he can expect some of the heat he is getting if constantly showcasing his most confronting method; for fame & views. Garrett had an emotional talk not long ago addressing the malicious nature of the attacks he has been dealing with - plain awful. Really appreciate your advice on E-collars: I have avoided them because of your advice before I understood more & so glad as I am sure it would have ruined my dog.

I excused myself and came back in with a muzzle on my Dobe. The owner of the other dog thanked me for keeping everyone safe it automatically put her at ease. She was thrilled I did it and even complimented me as most dogs aren't used to wearing one and because of the conditioning I have done with my boys, making them feel good about wearing one - such handsome dudes, they never try to get them off. And again, we rarely use them anymore, but even my Beagle/JRT mix, who hasn't worn a muzzle in quite some time, actually wagged her tail when I brought it out. Hope that helps.

My husky mix loved the e-collar because he knew we were going on a walk. Because of the e-collar he was able to enjoy the freedom running off leash. I agree that most people can screw their dog up if they don’t train their dog to it correctly. And like you said Tom Davis explains the proper use very well. LIMA - Least evasive minimally aversive. Not sure who used it first however I see it used in 'dogs playing for life' quite successfully. Aimee Sadler created this program for shelter dogs, it's amazing.
@mikelazure7462 Жыл бұрын
Very close - LIMA - Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive. It is a code of practice for training dogs that can be used by anybody, not only trainers. It seeks to recognise 'reality' - accepting that 'some' level of aversive corrections will be needed in various situations but also recognising that humans can be lazy and use such methods when they are not needed - so the LIMA standard helps a trainer or owner reflect on their own practice and motivations for choosing a particular intervention.... Did I REALLY need to correct my dog THAT much? Would less energy in the correction have produced the same or better outcome? That kind of thing.

The old 'heavy hitter' here! (Hey Eric, you'd be the first to ever call me THAT.) There was SO much in this conversation I could have made ten or more comments - but I will limit myself to just one, on a topic close to my heart. The NON difference between adopting a rescue and buying a 'pure breed' dog. Both are a lottery. Rescue dogs deserve better PR and 'kennel bought' dogs are not "all that." The breeding/show dog industry has great PR but an awful track record in terms of producing healthy breeds with resilient temperaments suitable for everyday life. Lots of pure bred dogs have genetic problems of body and temperament. Lots of BREED standards and how they are judged 'in show' to win a "Champion" title for a dog do not serve the obvious health of that breed. I hung around with breeders who produced show "Champions" long enough to see their mentality and it was about WINNING rather than about breeding a great breed for every day life. SO - a pure bred dog can be a lottery - a rescue can be a lottery. Despite what the Kennel clubs want us to think, we don't know what we are buying when we buy a pure bred dog. Now the other part of this is that the real problem is not the dogs, rescued or kennel bred, the real problem is how ignorant so many of us dog owners are. A large percentage of the dogs with behavioural problems got those problems from how their owners treated them. Mediocre breeding and new born puppy treatment can obviously make certain temperament problems MORE likely but it remains the case that Human ignorance should be a much larger part of this whole 'buy or adopt' conversation. I've had one pure bred GSD from a puppy, adopted an adult Ridgy, adopted an adult Rotty, adopted a "Kelpie" crossed with ?? from puppy and most recently an adult GSD from a 'last chance' rescue organisation. My experience has been that adopting has given me awesome dogs, repeatedly. A key part of that has been me going and learning stuff to help each dog. I'm sixty and that learning continues. Rescue dogs ROCK.

The high-minded moralization of the force issue is ultimately self-deceiving in motive. People don’t like how Joel uses force because of an emotional response, not some logical deduction of ethical principles or studies. It is that simple Related rant: We are so thoroughly disconnected from our food that most have never *needed* to experience taking a cruel position against animals in their lives. This has facilitated our brains/emotions to readily infantilize animals _Why be cruel to innocent nature?_ is the gut emotional reaction because there has never been a practical reason to do so in their lived experience. It is literally inconceivable to them

I got confused when you talked about balance trainers. Joel aren’t you a balance trainer? Also, how many types of dog training is there? I figured it’s two (positive only & balance training). When I was a child there was a line. If you crossed it it would mean possibly a arm grab and being removed from a situation. Maybe a crack on the butt. Was I abused I dont think I was. Negative actions bring negative results. I feel some people and animals learn that way best. Not that screaming or hitting a dog is ok. Its not. But letting a dog freak out on a leash to tire its self out and get the point to me can be life saving in some situations. Different techniques and tools for different situations.

Sorry to chip in on this subject again, this will be the last i promise🤦 As we kind of touched on value of life and dogs being equal to humans. I think the FF movement actually value dog life higher than humans life. I come to this conclusion based on the fact that they are not protesting against correctional facilities for humans. We punish criminal humans when they mis behave. We take things away from them, ultimately the highest price would be freedom. Should we be dealing with serious criminals with purely positive reinforcement? How would that work? Or is that ok? 👍🐶❤

This is a totally separate conversation but the “let’s punish humans” debate is not exactly settled. Nobody knows if punishment is effective or not. We like to think if we put people in jail that they’ve learned…because it makes us feel better about locking people up in cages. But the rate of recidivism is so high, it’s not like have any idea how effective “punishment” is in humans.

P.s. Reminded of Inspector Clouseau in that scene where he's asked if his dog bites. The dog in question bites. BiteVictim: "I thought you said your dog doesn't bite. " Inspector Clouseau: "That's not my dog."

He/Him (Pronounced Alt as in Alter) Hey. Very engaging podcast! I was wondering if you guys could discuss how coddling and reassuring a dog when their scared affects them. I've failed repeatedly to convince my family that petting, hugging and telling the dog "it's okay" is making her severe anxiety worse. Any advice on explaining why this is counter productive? Or perhaps you don't agree with my line of thinking either, but either way, I'd love to hear your opinion on it!

Baskervilles aren't 100% bite proof and don't fit a lot of dogs properly, even the dog in the thumbnail isn't wearing the baskerville correctly. Personally, especially when doing things like training that might be stressful, you want a muzzle that the dog can fully pant in because the dog needs to cool himself down. If you're dog is going to be wearing a muzzle for a long time get one that allows the dog to pant fully. Also cat muzzles do exist they look like space helmets.

We euthanize sick or injured dogs but we kill healthy dogs all the time because the owner cannot or will not be the leader the dog needs. These force free people seem to be ok with just throwing away a dog like its used furniture rather than saving the dog.. Where are there feelings now ?

Yes! The dog park is a very unnatural place. As far dogs do mirror wolves what would happen to a wolf that was suddenly introduced to a pack of strange wolves? Probably be torn apart.I think it’s a poor substitute for interacting/playing with your dog and destroys trust in the dog/human relationship.

Gosh how I love these podcasts 😎 also, when you guys were talking about the Anatolian Shepherd, you did not think about the Kangal, right? Very similar, yet not the same breed (both made in Turkey 🇹🇷❤ just like me lol).

Do dogs know when another dog tries to bite them through the muzzle? An off leash dog ran up to my dog and tried to bite her through the muzzle, my dog was surprised but back to normal in 2 seconds and wanted to play with the biter.

Way to come back up for air. There for awhile you all was getting SOooo deep like a scuba diver running out of air in his tank. And you keep thinking "will he make it back up before he drowns?" Love the wild animal talks. I would pick the rats and the wolves. Also is there going to be another "prince of the kits" update video soon? So fun watching him try to figure out how to "communicate" with his new little (brother's/sister's).

The amount of misinformation and triggers that non-pet professionals have is ridiculous. I have to constantly correct people on misinformation.

Does Joel think that it’s a good idea in general for dogs and their humans to be together at the vet? I love the idea for my dog since we taught him calmness but most dogs behave better away from their owners unfortunately.Happy to see VEG is here in Tampa FL near me!
@carriejordan8999 Жыл бұрын
I think you need to respect what the owner says. I told the vet that I had to accompany my male chow. They wouldn't let me and I wish I had left right then. They had him for 15 minutes. He chewed through his muzzle and his leash and bit the vet and was growling and charging anyone trying to get close to him. He was okay before that visit and now I have to decide if he.needs treatment enough to risk full on sedation. 2 years later and he still goes into lion mode when he smells that vet clinic.
@OffGridDogs Жыл бұрын
@@carriejordan8999 find a better vet. Although I don’t blame vets for having that rule since most dogs behave better away from their insecure, weak energy owners but if your dog respects you he’s better off with you present especially since most vets and vet techs don’t know how to behave around dogs incredibly

I'm an hour and 11 in. If I'm following properly Eric is making super sense. Unfortunately these people aren't PEOPLE PEOPLE. I was taking in a Romanian youtuber earlier who started his stream with a personal vent. He shared that fire the last weeks a stray dog had come into his community and was creating a medium amount of dysfunction. The dig is ripping cars apart but so far has not attached a human. The laws in Romania make it illegal for a citizen to move/ remove the dog. I mean change physical location. Also the authorities in charge of removal department aren't in any sort hurry to tend to his neighborhood. I thought that was a psycho law. And that seems ti be on the milder side if what i think occurs animal rights wise in the EU. Anywho, thanks You Two.
