Without £40 million+ being spent, there will never be a day trip to Ardrossan. These ferries are too big, so can only operate out of Troon, meaning that each journey goes up from 55 to 80 minutes.

@@colinlambert882 So sorry for my "home port" Ardrossan. Not sure if Peel Holdings (I understand that they are the port operators) will carry out the work. Such a shame that the islanders will see such a lengthening of their journey times...not to mention CalMac's increased fuel bill!

If the SNP dropped their silly green agenda and ordered 2 deisel ferries, they would have been sailing in 2018 at close to the budgeted cost. The Ferry fiasco lies solely at the door of the Scottish government and theyre green con! Still, good to see her finally dock at Broddick@paparobbo62

Rejoice! First trial berthing and in-service sometime in 2025? BUT…..MV Alfred was ordered years later than the Ferguson duo in 04/17 and has been in service for over 5 years, costing just £14.5 million to build, using 60%+ less fuel = 60% less emissions than conventional ferries like G Sannox and has a crew of 13, not 31. She has a much lower superstructure than G Sannox, so is able to operate in worse weather conditions. How happy would Arran residents have been if 4 MV Alfred’s had been ordered for the Arran route in 2017,costing £60-70 million in total and all in service within 2 1/2 years of being ordered? The running costs of 4 catamarans in fuel and crew would be less than for the two Glens, with a combined single-trip capacity of 384 cars, compared with 254 for the Glens - providing actually what Islanders wanted - a more frequent ferry service!

If only the Scottish Government had used common sense back at the design stage & used efficient diesel engines & not pointless dual fuel which caused the build costs to sky rocket & ridiculous delays. As has been described by the builders the complexity of trying to fit everything under the car deck has made her as complex if not more so than a Type 26 frigate! Only tax payers money I guess as the government has none!

@dan2665

@@patrickallen1628 Good point, and I agree, contract restrictions after leaving EU and the lack of initial funding from central government to save the yard would have indeed been contribution factors. Fortunately the SNP had the courage and strategy plan to take that step themselves, and indeed save the yard from closure, the workers and people of surrounding area are forever indebted to their legacy.

If only politicians stepped out of the way and let people who do know what they are doing get on with the job. Each and every time they involve themselves with any project, it gets totally messed up. How late is this ship, where is the terminal for the green fuel it was touted to use, and what steps are being taken to ensure the continued services to other islands? Pitiful performance by pi55 poor politicians.
