The only reason why Gwi was defeated in the end because he no longer have the will to live. He's obviously stronger than the main character and yet he lost. Gwi lost the only one that he truly loved, but consumed with his pride, he kept denying it. It was only then that she died when he fully realized how much she ment to him, she's the only reason he kept living, and if losing her means losing his only reason to live, he's willing to die in the arms of his long time enemy.

Actually watching the show I realised... Gwi probably wanted to control and to have power over humans because of his first love. He didn’t have control over her reaction, how she ran away from him. He was hurt, because she ran away, scared of him. He wanted to prove all humans were as weak as his first love, but at the same time he also wanted someone who would prove him wrong so badly.
